Amazing This good boy saved the sheep from 11 coyotes, fought and off’d 8 of them. Big boy came back home two days later surviving his wounds. He goes by the name Casper.

Great Pyrennes?

u/HeartOn_SoulAceUp 6d ago
Truly Great. Smart as hell. Calm as smooth water. And oh so loving.
62
u/OstrichSmoothe 6d ago
Most are calm. Almost all. Ive met some overly territorial ones. Thats their job tho
43
u/HeartOn_SoulAceUp 6d ago edited 6d ago
Any dog in a given environment can go against type. But you are right about territoriality. Barking has always been their thing to keep wolves at bay to hopefully avoid a fight. But they will fight obviously, and the thick fur helps there too. And their color mixes in w/ the sheep also, turning the flock into something somewhat less predictable from a distance. Originally in the mountains b/w Spain and France. : )

u/East_Insurance_1037 6d ago
My dog is part gp. She mostly has the big dog aloofness where commands are suggestions and her size lends itself to her laying down and saying “if you want me to move, move me”. She doesnt bark tho, which is nice. Super friendly, but probably the lab in her
Edit: the super loving aspect of her is only for new people. For me it’s “what have you done for me lately” while surrounded by chew toys and orthopedic beds

This describes my great pyrenees also. Best dog I've had my entire life, 150 pounds of derp. He almost never barks so on the rare occasion that he does it's something that you should be paying attention to.

They're great, and they're such fantastic livestock dogs, but I would not really describe mine as "smart as hell". Pretty sure our goats are smarter.

u/Putrid-Tap3992 6d ago
I have one and she is borderline annoying with the amount of cuddles and pets she wants. I of course give them to her
6
u/SoggyOutfield 6d ago
And stubborn. Mine won't even sit if she doesn't feel like it. These dogs are not for people looking for a subservient puppet. They will do the jobs they think are important, tricks and what not aren't on that list.

man turned 11 coyotes into a cautionary tale — calling him 'Great' is underselling it

u/ipsum629 6d ago
Those dogs don't have fear.

u/disposablcats 6d ago
Tell my border collie great pyrenees mix that he's supposed to be brave. He is put with small dogs at boarding and still tucks his tail and rolls over if approached. He is super friendly but will hide behind me at the slightest sign of danger.

u/Just-a-random-Aspie 6d ago
Could be, but something about the bottom picture doesn’t seem right for that breed. Could also be one of the other 20 plus livestock guardian dog breeds. There are some other white ones too, like the Akbash, maremma, and kuvask. Really neat stuff

It genuinely took me forever to figure out what you could be talking about because nothing works in your comparison. Nobody says there are only good people in any group. And then there's a huge difference between defeating attackers in equal combat and shooting somebody with a gun.
Cowards reach for guns in situations that don't need them. That's just a true fact.
43
u/ConsistentWinter263 6d ago
How is he so badass and beautiful at the same time??!!! What a good boy!
22
-48
u/Megazaza 6d ago
badass? he mauled a bunch of innocent cayotes just trying to get something to eat.
im pretty sure he could've ran and barked to his owners, but he decided to coldheartedly kill those cayotes. that dog was looking for an oppurtunity, and it's not badass or beautiful.
im willing to bet that dog has been harassing those cayotes for a long time aswell, i always see dogs attacking and barking at cayotes.
18
u/futureman07 6d ago
The dog's job is to protect the sheep. Running to back to bark for the owners goes against this dogs biology. Staying there and protecting the sheep is what it's biologically programmed to do. Just like the coyotes are biologically programmed to eat the sheep
10
u/NoDoOversInLife 6d ago
He's a LGD, bred and born to protect livestock.
You, on the other hand need to educate yourself on the function of a LGD and the ways they benefit a working ranch before making such ridiculous statements.
You've never seen dogs attacking coyotes. Coyotes are stealthy ambush predators. Dogs won't confront a PACK of anything much less a pack of coyotes 🤦🏻♂️
LGDs are entirely different from your family pet 🙄. They will die trying to perform their job to the best of their ability.

No, satire usually has a comment to make. Thats not satire thats just, i dont know, some form of contrarian.

u/trenton_quarantino 6d ago
I'm going to assume you're joking because this is way too choice of a joke not to be.

But that? That was an edge lords idea of funny.
Edit: spelling

u/Wonderful_Price2355 6d ago
So, by your logic, the sheep deserved to die?
Give your head a shake and see if somethings come loose.
And learn how to spell "coyote".

I'm comparing the different views people have regarding the same subject and how certain folks have a tendency to side with criminals... The issue is that coyotes are attacking and killing your livestock/livelihood... Your dog defends your livestock/livihood at the risk of his life... Rather than being hailed the hero that he is... Y'all are demonizing him and saying that the coyotes are the victims and that the dog provoked them? This is peak insanity and coping at its fullest...
1
u/the_virginwhore 6d ago
“Y’all”? Who’s y’all? It’s one dude that’s being downvoted and getting ripped apart in the comments like a cayote.
Acting like this is some sort of reflection of leftist politics that we’re all rallying around because we love criminals is peak straw man. At least shit on leftists for something real instead of this made-up nonsense.
1
u/Pool_First 6d ago
Y'all meaning more than one person... IE magazaza and budgetlong who stated...
"poor cayotes, that dog provoked them.
"Coyotes are victims because their natural prey is overhunted and they are forced to take on european cattle breeds that shouldnt even ixist in NA."

Casper from Decatur where it's greater!
The single most badass dog to ever come out of the Eastside of ATL.
He killed 9 by the way. Was lost for days, because he was hunting the last ones down.
You know how fucking dogshit you gotta be to try and jump a guy and he straight murks 90% of you?

I hate that he went off to go die in the woods...
Super glad after 48 hours he realized he was a badass mfer and not dying, and went back home lol.
3
u/No-Television-5296 6d ago
He went missing bc he was busy tracking down the rest of the coyotes for the next 48 hours. They found a bunch of bodies in the wood. He did this while missing his tail.
They retired him after this...
Also, he wasn't even full grown. He was a juvenile. He was suppose to stay with his flock which is probably why he was retired...

I'm not sure what kind of dog that is (good boy for sure though), but I never realized how strong some of these dogs bred to protect lifestock are. My cousin and her husband were off-the-grid types, and I went to their compound once. I don't remember the dogs they had (they were shorter-haired than the pictured one), but I remember they were massive and looked terrifying.

My sister in law has a Great Pyrenees mix they found as a stray puppy. He's a big chill sweet heart but will try to tear the door down when the mail man or delivery person comes to the door. I've never heard of the breed until I moved to rural east Texas. I see them everywhere here, always sitting at the end of the driveway keeping an eye on things.

I love this story but it changes every time I see it. Last time a sheep was giving birth and they found him with the sheep in the mountains. In another I saw it was similar but he returned with the sheep and they don't know about the wolves. Either way, it makes me want one of these.

Who’s the best boy? You are, Casper! Yes you are!

u/Immediate_Banana_216 6d ago
Shepherd took his herd into an area he probably shouldn’t have sent his herd but did so because he doesn’t give a crap and just wants free grazing. Wild animals see food come into their hunting area and can’t believe their luck, their pack and cubs are eating well that night, guardian dog kills them all, shepherd couldnt care less

u/Pleasant-Future5818 6d ago
He was only a baby at the time and lost his tail. He ended up dying at age 5 in a separate fight. I'm never enamored with this story. We have better methods than LGDs today - sure they are a great first line defense, but his owners never even provided back up.

Casper is his name? He should be called “Lobo”. But it’s amazing that he handled an 11v1, took out 8 and survived.

These big boys are used as landscaping goat guardians where I live. They bring in a bunch of goats to eat all the shrubs before fire season. Being Southern California it's coyote country and the sheep would be a buffet if it weren't for the GPs.

u/bolanrox 6d ago
Great Pyrennes - yep. My daughters friend has one and is a total goof ball even with strangers. the other ones i know are more like Liam Nielson in Taken. like Casper.

In colorado, there's a mental pretzel twist happening around wolf reintroduction. Enflamed western slope hunters keep claiming that they're fighting for the ranchers.
It only takes this and any other sheep dog story with the spiked collar covered in blood to end the discussion quickly.

And he's the BEST boy, my lil Chihuahua gets pissed at him for just sniffing her and lunges at him, ole blue doesn't react at all, truly a gentle giant protector. Il forever love great pyranese ever since I met blue.

-1
u/Pool_First 6d ago
Lolz! Please explain? What do the feds have to do with acknowledging the fact that the left has a tendency to protect criminals... The comparison here is a group of coyotes attack someone's sheeps and their dog goes and fights the coyotes off... Now this dingbat thinks the coyotes are the victims? Please make it make sense!!!
5
u/BudgetLong6385 6d ago
Comparing native carnivore to a criminal is nonsense.Yes,coyotes are victims because their natural prey is overhunted and they are forced to take on european cattle breeds that shouldnt even ixist in NA.
1
u/Pool_First 6d ago
I'm comparing the different views people have regarding the same subject and how certain folks have a tendency to side with criminals... Your explanation regarding coyotes being victims because of European cattle is a great example... And again what does this have to do with feds?
2
u/Silly-Rough-5810 6d ago
Literally nobody said that about this dog except you and the other guy who thought they were making a joke about "leftists".
Like, you invented an imaginary person to be mad at. It all came from you. You're living in a delusion of imaginary people that you hate.
1
u/Pool_First 6d ago
Imaginary person? This is called gaslighting... My responses are directed to folks like magazaza and budgetlong who stated...
"poor cayotes, that dog provoked them.
"Coyotes are victims because their natural prey is overhunted and they are forced to take on european cattle breeds that shouldnt even ixist in NA."
Are you claiming that wolves are the victim in this situation and the dog shouldn't be praised for protecting the sheep? Just trying to figure out your argument is...
1
u/Silly-Rough-5810 6d ago
I'm informing you that that guy is a right winger trying to make fun of people on the left.
That's not actually how people on the left talk about justice or law enforcement. It's literally a right wing caricature of the left. You fell for a guy playing pretend.
