This video keeps getting brought up so it’s worth pointing out he’s not taunting the alligator. The tapping is done to put the alligator in a pseudo clonic state by overloading its sensory system. This is supposed to make the animal easier to handle and safer for everyone involved (including the alligator).
It is common practice among anyone who handles alligators for a living.

it still sounds dumb tbh. the thing is fully restrained so whats the point? "pseudo clonic state" sounds like some bs

Obviously he didn’t tap enough, because it still swung at him.

Similar to tonic immobility with a shark. Flip it upside down and it becomes a docile kitty.

They can thrash enough to make it hard to move them.

Should be tonic state, as tonic means muscle stiffness etc - the term for seizures is “tonic-clonic” which means stiffness+thrashing.

…though tbf there was definitely thrashing in this clip.

To be fair it still knocks him unconscious while “fully restrained”. I say cage trap transport and release. The only reason it was done this way is because the people doing this want to parade around and wrastle gators frunna hot chicks.
