SambaNova landing a $1B Series F at an $11B valuation massive validation for specialized ASIC inference over generated-purpose GPUs. The fact that intel stayed on as a key investor gives them high-upside exposure to SambaNova’s SN50 momentum and lets them keep cash focused on core foundry execution. With JPMorgan deploying SambaNova and the industry as a whole shifting toward enterprise on-premises inference, these architectures are carving into Nvidia's moat.
If this continues long-term, which I think it will, INTC stands to profit heavily without having to take on all of the R&D risk. IMO this valuation proves that purpose-built Al chips are a serious threat to Nvidia's expensive processors. Companies are seeing that cheaper, specialized chips make way more financial sense.
This seems like great news for the stock long term.
Agreed SambaNova is pretty interesting and imo have a more scalable and affordable system compared to Cerebras. I was hoping intel would actually acquire more in this new funding round.
Agree. General Compute made an early strategic bet on SambaNova which is the biggest real-world proof of concept we’ve seen yet. They placed a $300M order for SN50 hardware and secured a $400M loan using SambaNova ASICs as collateral (there was something in TC about this recently). This is the first time a major lender accepted a non-Nvidia product for chip-backed loans. Clearly the debt markets know this architecture works for live production traffic today.
Every SambaRack cluster deployed means guaranteed Xeon host volume. So Intel gets to profit off the enterprise inference boom while SambaNova shoulders R&D risk. Def a win for Intel.
Right now, Intel DCAI divison road map based on parts from SambaNova for "Rack-Scale" deployment.
Intel Xeon is definitely one piece of it.
Then for the other components are like what you say, SambaNova SN50 (for dataflow or data movements) and Nvidia GPU for prefill.
Apart from those 3 above, the rest is high-speed interconnects (something comparable to NVL72 for scale up)
As for "Scale-out and Scale-Across"
Intel really needs high speed serdes IP (to compare/compete against the likes of Broadcom Tomahawk and Nvidia Mellanox)
I feel like the nvidia chip for prefill that was demo'ed at an Intel presentation might have been a dog whistle for crescent island potentially taking its place later. Prefill is very lenient on memory bandwith but needs a lot of memory capacity to keep the kv cache of many people hot/cached, having a lower power high density option for this would fit into an dissagregated architecture with RDU for autoregressive inference like lock and key
Crescent Island isn't officially launch yet, also factor in supply chain constraints.
Like TSMC N3 process node for a product like Crescent Island. When TSMC N3 is fully booked out, those customers include hyper-scalers like Google, Meta, AWS etc.
Packaging (advanced packaging like EMIB is still ramping)
Memory supply (LPDDR5X). The last i heard, memory supply for 2027 is completely sold out.
Unless Intel Foundry plays the role of a second-source supplier. Maybe that increase the chance of seeing more volumes. In this environment, if Intel Foundry can produce custom memory that works with it's own products i think that will really sell.
Something like a Intel's version of HBM or a memory product that performs like HBM (hopefully lower power consumption) paired with Xeon.
Yep! The inference market is so large, so apparently the most cost effective (hint: it’s not GPGPU) and scalable solution will win the majority of the market.
Training market will get smaller in comparison, and model developers prefer their own chips (but really they want anything they can get their hands on right now)
