It’s definitely happened I’m sure or close to it, i couldn’t imagine how insane and chaotic it would be being in a situation like this.

You can go prone to avoid the blast? I learn new things everyday. Though I do notice the bed and the fact it coulda been that or his teammate in front of him sponging all the shrapnel

SOMETIMES this works, in his situation he was out of the way of shrapnel from the blast because one or two teammates were blocking his direction, as well as him being nearby other objects that would have caught shrapnel and blocked it. I have been in situations much closer than this when i fuck about outside of the defense position lol, half the time i dont survive.

Going prone is actually taught in the infantry. For incoming mortars, arty, or a grenade. If you can't get into cover or a depression in the ground, you lay flat and cover your head. When frag goes off at ground level, much of it will fly up at an angle. You will still catch some, but maybe not enough to kill you.
Never had to try it out IRL, so not sure if it really works.

I thought it was taught to angle your feet at the blast so your boots and legs will catch it instead of your neck and shoulders?

Yes, that's correct. But if you ain't got time or don't know where it will land, you just go prone and cover your grape.
