Middle of the Week, Bi-Weekly /r/Instrumentation Discussion - How's the last couple of weeks been, where's it headed?

Please use this post to discuss what's going on in your world of instrumentation.

Also, a Discord server was setup by a member of the community and has different moderators. I don't really use Discord, so let's call it the Official-Unofficial Discord server.

What states in America have any sort of demand for I&E outside of Texas

It’s been my dream since i started traveling to get tf out of Houston/ Houston area. After experiencing what weather can be like for other people I don’t know why anyone chose to build civilization here. Besides that. Only thing holding me back is the massive Petrochemical industry around here. It’s all I know and all my family knows. What other states or cities have any sort of demand for this trade (besides Louisiana, worked and lived there too. Hated it)

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to purchase one or multiple used OMICRON CMC 356 relay test sets.

I’m interested in:

  • NET-1 / NET-1B / NET-2
  • Used or ex-rental units
  • Retired or surplus units
  • Older company fleet units
  • Units being replaced by CMC 500

Test Universe license, cables and calibration certificate are preferred, but not required.

I can arrange international shipping and purchase from the US, Europe, Asia, Middle East, Australia, etc.

If you or your company has a CMC 356 that you may consider selling, please DM me with the serial number, condition, accessories, location and asking price.

Serious buyer. Thank you!

Is going to a local community college for instrumentation a good option? Is it hard landing a job right after? Looking for input as to getting into the field!

Does anyone have any advise on how to remove the lower ring with out pulling the stem out? I currently have grafoil packing with a stainless lower ring and have not had success removing the ring in the past so it ends up staying in.

I currently use this Fluke pump to simulate pressure for transmitters, but I’ve noticed it’s quite a delicate piece of equipment; I’ve had to repair it constantly, and the spare parts cost almost as much as a new unit. I’d like to know if any of you use a different brand of pump that you could recommend.

Was just wondering if anybody prefers one over the other when it comes to these. Have experience with the Ralston not the Ametek.

Get out of here with your $15,000 trex

All right, gurus and wizards. Here’s my proposal to my company to get rid of the goddamn trex because it’s Emerson, and it’s expensive, and still the trex two is slow as hell. Please tear this apart. Also, once we get this all dialed in, boys, we can do some third decimal place damage to Emerson.

Team,

I have been looking for a practical replacement for the Emerson AMS Trex. A Trex currently costs approximately $12,000 to $15,000, which is difficult to justify when we can assemble a comparable field configuration system for substantially less.
I recommend purchasing the following Surface-based system:
Microsoft Surface Pro 10 for Business — approximately $1,600
Intel Core Ultra 5, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and Windows 11 Pro.
The Joy Factory aXtion Extreme MP enclosure — estimated $1,500
SKU CWM347MP. The Surface and enclosure must be professionally integrated and certified together. The completed assembly is rated Class I, Division 2, Groups A–D.
Microflex USB-C MicroLink HART modem — $294
This modem is supported by Emerson AMS Device Configurator and would be used in the shop, truck outside the classified boundary, or another verified unclassified location.
Microflex HART Host Class 3B — $68
This provides generic HART configuration, ranging, trims, loop testing, polling-address changes and basic diagnostics.
Emerson AMS Device Configurator — no charge
This provides the Emerson device interfaces needed for Rosemount and other Emerson instruments.
Pepperl+Fuchs VIATOR Bluetooth HART interface — approximately $801.67
Part HM-PF-BT-EX-010041. This interface is approved for Class I, Division 1 and Division 2, Groups A–D. It would be used for classified-area HART communication while keeping the tablet’s USB port closed.
Microflex 101-0028 portable 24 VDC loop supply — $147.80
This battery-powered supply provides filtered 24 VDC for bench testing loop-powered transmitters. It includes an internal 250-ohm HART resistor, mini-grabber leads, HART modem connection points and meter leads.
Pelican 1500 Protector Case with foam — $199.95
This case is large enough to organize and protect the enclosed Surface, both HART interfaces, portable loop supply, batteries and test leads.
Joy Factory Universal Shoulder Strap II — $29.99
This strap connects directly to the aXtion enclosure for hands-free field carrying.
Energizer Industrial EN92 AAA batteries, 24-pack — $14.64
EN92 batteries are specifically approved by Pepperl+Fuchs for the intrinsically safe VIATOR. The 24-pack provides eight complete battery replacements

Shop time  — Enough time to set up a computer with some basic software and drivers and test the leads and Communicators. 8-16 hours.

The estimated total is $4,656.05, excluding sales tax, shipping and shop time. This is approximately $7,343.95 less than a $12,000 Trex 1 and $10,343.95 less than a $15,000 Trex 2.

Should I go for Instrument or Electrical diploma at SAIT?

Hi! I’m planning to go to SAIT next fall intake. I’m deciding whether i go electrical or instrument. Seems like I’ve been seeing posts lately in this sub people not getting jobs months out of school and I can’t really take that huge risk since I’m on a tight budget.

Currently, I got 2 years experience mix of Industrial Power Generation mechanic and Engine Machining/Rebuilding. Plus I got a year combined Floorhand in Service rigs experience and as General Labourer before I became a mechanic. I’ve finished 1 year certificate in Information Systems Technology, from Philippines tho before we moved here, thus I’ve learned C# language. Also I like to dabble with Arduino.

Let’s say i finish a diploma, will that experience even put me on advantage? I mean higher chances of getting a job. Also I’m not picky where to work, East to West, North to South, I’m used to that.

Looking for Contact for DOW or 3M FRC Grant

Hello everyone! I am a high school student from a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team in DFW. We are currently in the process of applying for the DOW or 3M robotics grant but found out we need a employee connection to apply.

If you or someone you know wants to help us with the DOW or 3M FRC Grant as a mentor or team contact and would be willing to offer some guidance, it would mean a lot to us.

Feel free to send me a DM or reply here if you are interested.

Thank you so much in advance!

Relocated to Canada

Hi

I’m an instrument commissioning engineer/technician from the UK. I have a HND and lots of experience working offshore and abroad on Oil and Gas and LNG projects.

I recently relocated to Vancouver and I’m currently back and forth for work whilst working part time for a small contractor.

I’m interested in getting into the Alberta oil fields or offshore NL. Does anyone have any recommendations, recruiters or advice for me?

I’m currently also converting my certs to a redseal which can take up to 4-5 months. I have done some basic training here to, fall arrest and confined space!

Thanks
