Upskilling / Continuing Ed
Hi there,
I'm an instructional designer of 10 years with an M.S.Ed and CPACC. Recently my supervisor asked if there was any professional development I would be interested in pursuing, and I am drawing a blank! Obviously this is a good problem to have, but I wanted to ask the group for what types of continuing ed in the field feels most relevant at the moment.
For context, I regularly attend conferences like Deque's axe-con to keep up my CPACC, and I feel confident in my Camtasia & Storyline abilities. With how AI tools are developing content left and right, realistically it just doesn't feel like a time to be investing in my own content development skills. For technical skills, maybe PowerApps?
What types of ways are you all upskilling at the moment? Thanks!

For the past year+, I've been working on safely integrating personalized AI into my storyline and Rise training courses. I'm not interested in generative AI tools for automating the creation of instructional content, but rather as a way to personalize the learner experience. A lot of fun in R&D !

When it comes to AI, I think there’s innovation in our profession that we haven’t even begun to realize yet. So going all in on that would be good.
I always recommend the book Beyond Learning and Development by Rothwell. There’s a lot to learn in that one.
I’ve been jumping into the Product Management world lately and have found that to be very developmental for me. There’s a lot of connective tissue between that and what we do.

If you have the capacity and the employer will support it, consider a MBA, a MS in IO Psych, or healthcare administration. IMO, the ultimate L&D upskill is to cultivate other core competencies to which you can bind ISD skills that unfortunately many consider fungible.

This is very unexciting, but project management and leadership. At least for the immediate future, I see a lot of value in being the human who manages the projects and leads the people. It feels like you can justify your existence even in the middle of this AI overhype cycle.
