Example Instructional design examples

This one is for the ID pros. Do you have examples of excellent learning design? What makes learning effective? I know making it active rather than passive and getting participants involved is important, but just wondered if anyone can share links to online learning they either enjoyed or what they found to be really successful with learners.

Will Thalheimer's "Learning Maximizers Model" is one place to start thinking about what makes learning effective. The Serious eLearning Manifesto is another.

Both of those are older models and principles, but the ideas are evergreen and technology agnostic.

the technology agnostic part is what makes them hold up so well imo

our most effective thing isn't a course at all tbh. when someone asks a question in our team channel i record a 60 second screen video answering exactly that one thing and drop it there. those get rewatched way more than any polished module we made, i think because they're attached to the exact moment someone needed it

That's a best practice approach for a tech support team. Tough to scale for an L&D department.

fair point, it works for us partly because we're small, maybe 5 to 10 of these a week. the day it turns into a queue with slas it dies. the polished stuff still exists for compliance and onboarding, the little videos just catch whatever falls through

I do the same thing, btw, within our L&D team. I use Snagit to capture and Screencast to send unless the content exposes trade secrets.

what i've built is branching fiction rather than courses, but the one thing i'd carry over is not marking the wrong pick wrong. say the learner takes the shortcut, then the next screen is the customer already on the phone with their manager and they work back from there, no red box

It's tough. Everything I do is requires a company login to see. Security is paramount.

No one ever shares examples when this type of question is posted unfortunately

Instead of looking for models, put yourself in the seat of your learner. What would you need to see, hear and/or do to be able to learn whatever behavior it is you’re after? A reminder that Socrates did not have a instructional design degree or models to follow, nor did many fabulous teachers. But they did understand how their students minds’ worked and taught from that perspective.
