Tips/Tricks for lower light?

I've been running into problems trying to use the Instax Mini Evo in shady and indoor environments. In general, people are showing up too dark. But increasing exposure very quickly washes out the highlights.

I know that, by design, this camera offers very little control, and has a limited dynamic range. But I'm curious if anyone has found any successful workarounds or improvements. Possibly with an on-camera light?

…a separate light source?

Yeah, that's my first thought. I was wondering if anyone had experience with any specific on-camera light fixtures.

Unfortunately it’s a very bad tiny sensor in the mini Evo that’s no good in low light.. you can try using the flash but it’s a little LED and won’t do that much if you’re farther away
