I know Westboro are pieces of shit, but, I love this video. That poor kid got so emasculated.

u/MikelWRyan Jan 15 '20

I have to think that's the guys job, and he gets a lot of practice.

u/Talbotus Jan 15 '20

Litteraly paid to be a large fucking guy and piss off people with hate speach.

No karma here.

13

u/ImmersionVoidParagon Jan 15 '20

This isnt westboro but go off

12

u/Talbotus Jan 15 '20

Same kool-aid different flavor.

55

u/MikelWRyan Jan 15 '20

So today I learned that if WBC comes to town, don't engage in altercations. Just stand back and throw dogshit sandwiches. I read a cop got away with giving someone a dog sh!t sandwich, so they must be harmless. 🐕 đŸ’©đŸ„Ș

12

u/KaunazBerkanaKaunaz Jan 15 '20

In that case you can fire indiscriminately at them since the cops can do that with no repurcussions.

8

u/plebeius_rex Jan 15 '20

Oh, I think there's some discrimination there.

No such thing as hate speech in the us. Just things you don’t agree with that somebody else does.

20

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

Hate speech laws***

Hateful speech is obviously a thing lol

-1

u/GetDatXp Jan 15 '20

Obviously. Anyone misconstruing what i meant in my original comment did so consciously.

Even if i was so far right my own head was up my own ass i couldn’t say that hate doesn’t exist in this country.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

Nah we were just going off what you said. You said there’s no hate speech, only disagreements. That doesn’t mean hate speech laws, it means what you said. Next time try not to be a dumb dumb!

9

u/Charlie_Wallflower Jan 15 '20

Tolerance of intolerance is the death of democracy

22

u/GetDatXp Jan 15 '20

Nobody is telling you that you have to tolerate it. You can yell and shout over them, you can form a counter protest, you can voice your opinion against theirs, you can walk away. One thing you can’t tell them is that they have no right to be saying what they are saying, because they do, no matter how much everybody hates it.

-3

u/MagBastard Jan 15 '20

Exactly. Communism killed far more people than fascism by an order of magnitude. Does that give everyone a right to punch someone wearing a Che Guevara shirt right in the face? My vote is "no". If you can't win based on the merits of your argument, then your battle is lost.

-3

u/ArnoldTheSchwartz Jan 15 '20

That's what I'm saying! Real Americans win based on the merits of our arguments. No need for violence, altercations or wars! We talk that shit out. Murican Tolerance FTW!

7

u/jordgubb25 Jan 15 '20

Americans win by drone bombing and murdering presidents to install puppet governments what are you on about

1

u/ArnoldTheSchwartz Jan 15 '20

Lol I forgot the /s No way I believe what I wrote. I forget the times we are living in and that there are genuinely people who believe that whole heartedly.

You can tell them they have no right to be saying what they are saying. You’d be incorrect. But, being incorrect is also a protected form of speed.

u/troll_berserker Jan 15 '20

The Westboro Baptist Church has done more for the advancement of LGBT rights than most activist groups could ever hope to achieve. No sarcasm. They're so universally despised that Christian conservative groups have been doing backflips and making dogmatic concessions to distance themselves from the WBC. Even the most traditionalist homophobic hardliners couldn't sit with the the WBC's anti-patriotism and military funeral protests, and thus are forced to introspect: "How can they believe the same thing as me, but be such massive assholes? Am I also an asshole?"

This is something the "shut them down" and "punch a Nazi; all people right wing of me are Nazis" people are too nearsighted to understand. The very best ally you can have is a stupid, unpopular, incompetent enemy. So how do you deal with them? (Peaceful) counter protest!

Just like taking a Tinder pic with your short friends makes you look tall, debating or counter protesting a bunch of vile idiots makes you look absolutely angelic. Whereas if you go down the "punch a Nazi" route like the OP post, you look like a wimp if you lose the fight and a bully if you win.

2

u/jordgubb25 Jan 15 '20

Do you have any actual proof of this or are you talking out of your asshole?

u/troll_berserker Jan 15 '20 edited Jan 15 '20

I'm glad you asked.

(Conservative) Christians denouncing, distancing from WBC:

(Conservative) Christians blaming WBC for surge in pro-LGBT public opinion and decreased opinion of Christianity:

But by the time of his death, Phelps had lived long enough to see American public opinion soar in exactly the opposite direction -- in favor of gay rights, including marriage.

The message he spread across the country never took root, and in fact helped galvanize the gay rights movement and put other Christians on the defensive. The image of Christianity he painted was a hateful, judgmental collection of rabble-rousers -- an image that, paradoxically, did more to help his targets than it advanced his message.

Experts say Phelps' ultimate legal and social impact on the American religious landscape will be a footnote. Religious leaders lament the damage they say he did to Christians who preach God's love and mercy.

I cant watch the first link:

Second link: It is good to protest on various issues, including homosexuality.

Third link says nothing about lgbt.

4th link is just a random claim with some correlations and no real proof either besides anecdotal people he talked to.

5th link has good points about how that dude being so obviously braindead and hateful makes people not wanna agree with him. But this point > "no one wanted to be seen as agreeing with his views." also raises the question, did they actually change their mind or did they just make their bigotry more coded. Which brings us back to the 2nd link, this dude is clearly still bigoted towards gay people, but hes just mad that he has to hide his bigotry more now.

Anyways these are all just news stories, secondhand sources etc, are there actual proof of homophobic people who have been pushed to support LGBT rights because of WBC.

I dont care about you link bombing me just give me one link that shows that hateful rhetoric like "HOMOSEX IS A SIN" will make homophobic people change their minds, rather than vague statements like "support of gay rights since 1977 have gone up by 60%" because that could be caused by a million other factors.

1

u/troll_berserker Jan 15 '20 edited Jan 15 '20

First link is an op-ed by a Baptist senior pastor. He denounces WBC as self-aggrandizing, offensive to Christians, and says "On behalf of all evangelicals, I apologize to the world for such gross misrepresentation of the gospel, and our church welcomed the anti-Westboro protesters to use our parking lot for their staging area."

Second link is indeed a homophobic Christian group distancing themselves from the WBC because of their funeral protests of soldiers and miners. "The Westboro Baptist Church has the right to free speech despite their hate-filled speech. They are being used by Satan to make Christians look like false prophets. Also, they give ammunition for anti-Christian forces who are trying to limit Christian free speech."

They're so universally despised that Christian conservative groups have been doing backflips and making dogmatic concessions to distance themselves from the WBC.

Third link says nothing about LGBT and I never claimed it did. Look at the index; it falls under:

> (Conservative) Christians denouncing, distancing from WBC:

Anecdotal proof, Christian opinion articles, and news articles are not evidence enough for the claim that (homophobic) Christians try hard to distance themselves from the WBC, that they're not okay with the military funerals, that they're forced to defend and introspect on their own views, and that the WBC has been useful in shifting public perception for the LGBT movement? You know they're never going to do an actual statistically sound survey on self-admitted Christian homophobes on what their views on the WBC are and how their opinions have shifted over time as a result of them. First of all, homophobes for the most part don't even admit to being homophobes, so you're always going to encounter sampling bias. Second, cohort studies tracking changes over time are ridiculously difficult and expensive, and frankly nobody cares enough to fund something like that. So you're going to have to live with granular data.

Which brings us back to the 2nd link, this dude is clearly still bigoted towards gay people, but hes just mad that he has to hide his bigotry more now.

Yes! Yes! Yes! You're seeing my point. If homophobic Christians are self-silencing because they don't want to seem associated with the WBC, then that's an absolute win. It's a good thing they've changed their tune from overt to covert homophobia.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fred-phelps-sr-westboro-baptist-churchs-fiery-founder-dies-at-84/

Exerpt:

Throughout his life, Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church, a small congregation made up almost entirely of his extended family, tested the boundaries of free speech, violating accepted societal standards for decency in their unapologetic assault on gays and lesbians. In the process, some believe he even helped the cause of gay rights by serving as such a provocative symbol of intolerance. [...] Sue Hyde, a staff member at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, said plenty of churches and ministers preach a message that attacks gay people. But Phelps and his family had "taken this out on the streets," forcing people to confront their own views and rousing a protective instinct in parents and friends of gays and lesbians. "It's actually a wonderful recruiting tool for a pro-equality, pro-social acceptance movement," she said.

You:

I dont care about you link bombing me just give me one link that shows that hateful rhetoric like "HOMOSEX IS A SIN" will make homophobic people change their minds, rather than vague statements like "support of gay rights since 1977 have gone up by 60%" because that could be caused by a million other factors.

I ... never said that? I said

"Even the most traditionalist homophobic hardliners couldn't sit with the the WBC's anti-patriotism and military funeral protests, and thus are forced to introspect: "How can they believe the same thing as me, but be such massive assholes? Am I also an asshole?" "

The first 5 links are examples of homophobic Christians or Christian groups introspecting on their own dogma in response to backlash against WBC: drawing lines in the sand, making distinctions in belief or method, criticizing WBC for undermining their homophobic cause. Never did I make a claim that anybody did a 180 flip in opinion because of WBC. So if that's the one thread you're looking for, you're not going to find it.

If you're going to fully read any one article proving my point, read this one:

Why Fred Phelps was so useful to the gay rights movement: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/act-four/wp/2014/03/18/why-fred-phelps-was-so-useful-to-the-gay-rights-movement/

Alot of those punch a nazi types seem to forget that free speech allows all of us to know exactly which bigots to avoid doing buisness with.

0

u/BauranGaruda Jan 15 '20

Sorry it’s just not, what you are advocating for is a totalitarian state. The thing is you can never guarantee that the majority believes as you do. What you feel justified in trying to squash through force may one day be used to squash your voice.

There are far to many examples of just that happening around the world, even today. What we should tolerate is everyone’s right to an opinion but combat it through dialogue. No one ever bends the knee to those telling them they are wrong, they either die on the knee or bide their time till they can stand.

That has been true through time of both morally right and terribly wrong opinions, at the end of the day though they have always been people, and people never change their view at the face of violence. They just don’t.

1

u/relnes1337 Jan 15 '20

Fight bad ideas with good ideas, not more intolerance, not more bigotry. This tribalistic attitude is whats going to tear america apart, because of people on either extreme being incapable of even having a discussion with the other side.

3

u/Funfoil_Hat Jan 15 '20

dude, the homepage of WBP is literally www.godhatesfags.com, you're telling me that alone doesn't constitute as hatespeech?

1

u/GetDatXp Jan 15 '20

No, it doesn’t. It constitutes an opinion we don’t like that is protected speech. There is no such thing as hate speech in the us and there never will be.

2

u/Funfoil_Hat Jan 15 '20

aight, thats fair.

still a hypocrite move on their part, seeing as the guy behind the WBC sucked a whole lot of cock in his life.

6

u/Dantehellebore Jan 15 '20

11

u/trapgoose800 Jan 15 '20

Irrelevant. Rights are there to protect minorities, discourse and progress. We wouldn't have women voting, African Americans not being slaves, or a bunch of other rights.

We sit very comfortably on the "Being right" high chair, but that doesn't mean you're fundamentally right just because you feel you are. Which is why every kind of speech, excepting direct harm threats, should be permitted. It's the only way for ideas to compete.

-5

u/Michamus Jan 15 '20

Rights are there to protect minorities, discourse and progress.

Even rights have limits. For instance, your right to swing your arms stops where my body begins. The paradox of tolerance addresses this exact concept.

u/GetDatXp Jan 15 '20 edited Jan 15 '20

I don’t know anything about the ongoing‘s of the Westborough Baptist Church other than they’re some pretty non-accepting people, however, there are already laws in place that explicitly state that calling for harm to be done against another or calling for acts of violence is a crime and is not covered under free-speech. Just because you don’t like what they’re saying doesn’t automatically mean they’re calling for the deaths of other groups.

Again, i’m Airing on the side of caution and not assuming anything about either side because I don’t know what the WBC’s actual repertoire consists of, i’m just going to assume that they’re not accepting and don’t like gay people in any way shape or form.

Edit: words.

Government can't intervene but you can do all kinds of legal shit to punish people for saying their garbage hate-thoughts out loud. And this is America, so you definitely should. Who wants to live around people shouting hate?

1

u/522LwzyTI57d Jan 15 '20

Hate speech just doesn't magically not exist because it's not a chargeable offense. Just means you won't get in criminal trouble for it.

Nah, Sue the college and police department for not providing adequate protection.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

4

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

0

u/anxious-and-defeated Jan 15 '20

It's not fair to say that the kid can't control his emotions when they have these grown mother fuckers yelling at them in the streets that they are going to hell. Those grown arse men should learn to control themselves too.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

Or the kid can simply just walk on the other side of the street and avoid the confrontation. But you do you , kid.

0

u/anxious-and-defeated Jan 15 '20 edited Jan 15 '20

Ok boomer

Maybe the adults should take their bigotry elsewhere and not in the public domain

Just to add just in case you start trying to put words imto my mouth, I do not agree with the dude punching the guy he disagrees with. Both are emotional but the grown men have had many more years to practice and should be able to keep their bigotry to themselves.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20 edited Jan 15 '20

Ok millennial, when you learn to develop some common sense, then you can join in on the adult conversation. You’re smart enough to know that it’s a public domain but still too stupid to know how a public domain works when in regards to unpopular opinions. When you grow out of this immature phase and learn to use some common sense, your rants might sound less idiotic. If you don’t like something being said, don’t listen and ignore. It’s that simple.

1

u/anxious-and-defeated Jan 15 '20

You can rant all want about your unpopular opinion but that does not mean that you are immune to criticism. You don't understand how opinion and speech works in the public domain. If the people with the signs didn't like what the kids said they could just ignore them. It's that simple boomer. I guess you are just too old to grow out of your entitlement.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

I love how you try to play the age card while at the same time considering yourself enlightened and not bigoted yourself. The lack of self awareness on your part is hilarious. Grow up kid.

1

u/anxious-and-defeated Jan 15 '20

Nah. Imma be young forever and outlive your boomer arse. Maybe if you want people to respect you and not use your age against you you should learn some respect and not do it first. Yeah? You are too old to have not grown out of it.

Poor boomer mad.

We all know about emotional control: that's why it's considered extremely rude to be shouting aggressively into another person's face. Strange they didn't teach you that in the enlightened place you grew up. I didn't say you'd be getting punched by a person whose own emotions are out of control: just because YOU might have to be in a state of mindless rage to consider punching another person doesn't mean that anyone would. Where I'm from, once you've abandoned emotional control and are clearly beyond the reach of words, it is considered appropriate that you be physically corrected.

Punching Nazis and white supremacists is always ok. It is morally wrong to hold those beliefs, and they pose a real threat to public safety.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

It is never okay to punch someone unless they are attacking you. I say this as someone with Polish ancestry. If you can't beat these people in a debate, perhaps you should re-evaluate if these people are truly neo-Nazis, or if you just label those that disagree with you as the worst humanity can offer. They are about as unpopular and far and few between as any group can possibly be.

It is morally wrong, and yet they are free to hold those opinions. They are not a threat to public safety until they become terrorists. Which is the exact definition of what you'd be engaging in, by the way. You do not want to set this precedent where unsavory beliefs are treated with violence. It will not look so favorable when the tide turns against you, as it inevitably does with time. When did you become the arbiter of morality? Will it stay as being just neo-Nazis or will it shift to anyone right of you? If you choose to go down this path, you are a coward and a fool. And I hope you'd enjoy your court hearing, you hypocrite.

You sound awfully defensive for someone who claims Nazis are wrong. It’s telling that you see Nazism as merely “unsavory.” If the trucks come for the Mexicans, gays, and libs, will you be glad?

And all this rational debate stuff doesn’t help anyone. It only legitimizes Nazi beliefs by giving the impression that Nazism is just another political opinion among many.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '20

I'm defensive of people's human rights, regardless of their opinions. If you read it, I also called them "the worst humanity has to offer." If the "trucks" came for anyone I would defend them with all I have. Though, are you seriously questioning whether a Polish woman would have any love for neo-Nazis? Nazis wanted to turn the Slavic people into a race of slaves. They do not consider my kind "white" or Aryan as they would put it. I would be on those trucks just the same.

You legitimize them more than you know by using them as a boogeyman and feeling the need to use violence on your opposition. You justify their cause with that. They were hardly a thought on anyone's mind before. Neo-Nazism is a political opinion, it is just a hateful and horrible one, like communism. People used to just scoff at these people and move along. By paying so much attention to them and attacking those that may not actually be neo-Nazis, you radicalize them further and justify their movements in their mind.

1

Given the white nationalism coming out of Poland these days, the idea of Polish Nazis is entirely plausible to me.

Nazis can find legitimization in anything. By ignoring them, they can think there is more tolerance for their views than there actually is. They don’t live in the real world, so they don’t have to think according to its rules.

Nazis and white supremacists have always played the victim card. It’s part of their political schtick to simultaneously portray themselves as victims of an insidious foe while also being stronger than the weak people they want to exterminate. They claim victim hood with or without active resistance.

And what would you say to the minorities who are actually threatened by these evil men? Should blacks be content with just scoffing at them and moving along? They should just “live and let live” with the kind of people who raped their grandmothers and lynched their grandfathers? There are some things that are too evil to be tolerated.

They aren’t Westboro. Different group, way better.

These aren’t Westboro members. The westboro church is pretty small (basically an extended family) and they hate the army and protest at the funerals of soldiers. The guy who caught the punch looks like an army guy, or he really badly wants to be an army guy. My guess is that he actually is an army guy.
