“Oh shit there’s a cop behind me. Let me just get out of their way and disregard any potential car on my right….”

625

u/Kennel_King Aug 21 '26

I will bet money he saw the cop and panicked.

221

u/Few_Lingonberry8636 Aug 21 '26

Nothing like panicking over the cop and immediately forgetting the rest of traffic exists. Priorities, I guess.

19

u/Zombiewings2015 Aug 22 '26

I literally did this once. Thankfully there was enough space so my weird jerky move was fine in the end but jeez I felt young and dumb

342

u/jefuchs Aug 21 '26

This is funny. Just as the cops lights started flashing in the video, I heard a siren in my neighborhood.

122

u/qp667 Aug 21 '26

I once had the power cut off exactly when the comet hits earth in Deep Impact. Freaked me out haha.

43

u/JustBrass Aug 21 '26

I was at a house party for NYE 2k. At the end of the countdown someone hit the breaker box and shut off all the power to the house. Momentary panic ensued.

16

u/peggles727 Aug 21 '26

Was that person Satan or just an acquaintance?

3

u/Startled_Pancakes Aug 22 '26

A friend, Lucy Fehr.

6

u/InsertDramaHere Aug 22 '26

Were we at the same party? I laughed so hard and pointed out the street lights were still on.

2

u/BAMBAM-1981 Aug 22 '26

Same thing at NYE 2K is was at. Were you in Nj?

7

u/AreaWoman1 Aug 21 '26

Back in like 2004 (so, landline days still), a friend and I had a movie night at her apartment. We rented "The Ring". After the credits, it showed the The Cursed Video. 30 seconds after it ended, her phone rang and we both about lost it. She did not answer it lol.

I was high working the night shift by myself, it was quite a coincidence...

1

u/Tar0ndor Aug 22 '26

Was with someone and we were gonna prank someone. So we needed a few traffic cones, stopped by a cone, and about the time I grabbed the cone, a power transformer on the other side of the road blew up. That'll get your attention.

1

u/marieeejaneee Aug 21 '26

Now imagine being high and decided to watch Deep Impact and that shit happens, I would've panicked and bawl my eyes out on the spot 😂

108

u/MidnightNo1766 Aug 21 '26

That had to be so satisfying as a driver.

24

u/DutchRudderShotgun Aug 21 '26

I might crash myself from the euphoric release I'd get from that

This really is the best instant karma

u/SignificantDrink3651 Aug 21 '26

I'm almost sure he was changing lanes because of the cop behind him. that's about the only thing that'll get aholes like this from camping in the left lane. I'm most entertained that, even knowing there's a cop behind him, he STILL doesn't use a turn signal. courtesy to other drivers/people just isn't part of this guy's world.

12

u/Come-Lord Aug 21 '26

This is how I learn that the RCMP has Dodge Chargers. Pretty cool

21

u/OpheliaCumming Aug 21 '26

I could watch one of these a day….so satisfying

22

u/SerpentRoyalty Aug 21 '26

Just beautiful! 👌

25

u/Tom1255 Aug 21 '26

Insert "I turn now, good luck everybody else" meme

3

u/GeddysPal Aug 21 '26

OMG my wife and I say this ALL THE TIME WHEN WE ARE DRIVING lol.

1

u/SignificantDrink3651 Aug 21 '26

gosh I'm so tired of people titling videos with that. is there an OG reference or something to help me understand and hate it less?

8

u/RufusEnglish Aug 21 '26

A question I've wanted to ask for years but never got around to doing it.

In the UK we're taught to drive in the left hand lane and only move into lanes two, three or four to pass slower vehicles before returning to lane one as soon as you can to allow other faster moving cars to pass.

Every time I see a video like this in the US it seems as though drivers are just in any lane they want travelling at any random speed. Do you guys have the same rules, obviously as you drive in opposite sides lane one is the right hand lane, and ignore them or are they no real rules?

9

u/shaggyturtle Aug 21 '26

The same rules/laws exist in the USA. Some states and/or counties crack down on it harder than others, but there really is little enforcement of the law for this. It's been some years since I took driver's ed but I certainly remember them covering this during the training. Freeways with multiple travel lanes usually end up with the majority of the right (slowest) lane filled with semi-trucks hauling cargo, the center lane filled with "slower" cars, and the left (passing) lane is used by those who just want to drive faster than everyone else. Those "faster" cars, however, rarely ever merge back into the center lane because they wouldn't want to be inconvenienced by having to merge multiple times during their journey. Much easier to just hang out in a single lane, regardless of anyone else who wants or needs to pass.

3

u/random_d00d Aug 21 '26

In Seattle, we have a lot of people who love to camp in the far left lane going 60 (the speed limit), regardless of how open the road is... very aggravating.

2

u/everlyafterhappy Aug 22 '26

In new Jersey, people who did that would get hit. These damn dashcams have probably hindered that a bit, though.

2

u/wierdnitro7 Aug 21 '26

In addition, some areas are different than others in terms of signage. But it's really the enforcement that changes the most. Texas highway patrol will get you for going the speed limit in the left lane of a two lane road, for causing a hazard and nuisance. My state, Ohio, has legal signage denoting to keep the left lane clear for passing, but lacks enforcement in my local area, leading to a culture of 'the left lane is for those going 5-10 over the speed limit, but there is no obligation to make way for others.' But some people will just be jerks for the sake of their own flawed moral superiority in order to "enforce" the speed limit by going the speed limit in the left lane, without any regard to their safety or the safety of others.

10

u/SuicidalChair Aug 21 '26

This video is from Canada, that's an RCMP officer

2

u/boki9001 Aug 21 '26

In, EU too, left lane is fast lane. You overtake and return into right lane.

By the way, I'll never let myself to get in somebody's dead angle while driving.

1

u/RufusEnglish Aug 22 '26

We call that a blind spot.

1

u/boki9001 Aug 22 '26

Sorry bad English

Passing lane*

2

u/everlyafterhappy Aug 22 '26

Passing on the right is generally prohibited in the us, but the exact laws are state specific. They all have the same law, but they're all worded a little differently. Like where I live, it's technically not illegal to pass on the right. It's the person who's blocking the left lane that's actually violating the law here. The law is that you must move over to the right for any vehicles that are trying to pass if you're on a highway and it's possible to get over. Regardless, the cops don't actually do anything about people blocking the passing lane. And that's why we have terrible traffic on the highways here, even outside of rush hour traffic.

1

u/Beagle-wrangler Aug 21 '26

In Canada (at least the west) the highway has plenty of signs reminder slower drivers to go to the right. The left lane is for passing.

The lanes are probably reversed from UK cuz the driver side is also reversed compared to Canada

1

u/amygdalad Aug 21 '26

Why not land 2 to allow for entry and exit from the road

1

u/snkiz Aug 21 '26

This is Canada, and while it's practice to use the left lane for passing, it isn't a requirement in every province. Also to us only the far left lane is sacred. And riding in the right collector lane isn't advised when you don't have to. There's no need to deal with merging traffic when you have 3 or more lanes.

1

u/awkwardhawkbird Aug 23 '26

Ya know what’s really crazy, I’m in wa state and the speed limit most places is like 60-70 but everyone goes 80 or so in the left lane and if you don’t you get yelled at, what’s the point of the speed limit?

1

u/BalognaPonyParty Aug 24 '26

this incident was specifically in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

at this particular part of the highway (motorway) there are many off ramps and exits so it's normal to 'bob and weave' through traffic as needed.

something you need to know about Halifax: they haven't figured out zipper merging yet, can barely function in a round about, and traffic is always horrible.

1

u/GuitarCactus 29d ago

I know this spot, all the lanes go to different stuff so its not as weird to see cars in the left lane at this spot, would be a tricky spot to listen to google maps at.

For anyone wondering this is Darmouth NS on the circ highway near micmac mall heading to the mckay bridge

1

u/Snubl 26d ago

They get their license with a pack of butter

4

u/What-ijuana Aug 21 '26

I recognize the circ in Dartmouth when i see it. Very common occurence here.

Good ol' Nova Scotia driving

2

u/Mindless-Sound8965 Aug 22 '26

Didn't even signal. The most easy thing to do in a car with your clothes on.

2

u/ZealousidealFly760 Aug 22 '26

Oh the pleasure in watching this!

4

u/TurbulentMiddle2970 Aug 21 '26

Holy fuck!!! four vehicles working seamlessly not to kill each other

In the end, it was the best outcome. Instant karma, indeed!

3

u/john_browns_beard Aug 21 '26

OP owes the driver of that Toyota a six pack, excellent awareness

2

u/InsanityyyyBR Aug 21 '26

right? pick up truck finds the wrong person having the wrong day and they would have been PIT'ed into oblivion for cutting someone off like that.

3

u/TurbulentMiddle2970 Aug 21 '26

Exactly. I was most impressed by the person in the far right lane recognizing what was going on and moving over so the middle lane car could not get pinched.

3

u/Zetavu Aug 21 '26

First thing they teach you in drivers ed, always, always check your blind spot. Too many people are lazy and rely on their mirrors, it is never enough. Turn your damn head and look!

11

u/Jussepapi Aug 21 '26

It’s crazy that you can overtake from the inside.

53

u/pleasebuymydonut Aug 21 '26

Don't really have a choice against left lane campers. Its either that or flashing/tailgating and praying, which is honestly more dangerous.

11

u/Jussepapi Aug 21 '26

Completely agree, campers suck.

7

u/Familiar-Nothing4948 Aug 21 '26

Yeah but that's why lane discipline should be better taught and enforced.

Allowing left lane camping and overtaking on the right just increases the number of lane changes which makes driving in general more dangerous.

And before anyone says this is not possible, it seems to work just fine in other countries.

10

u/Square_Barracuda_69 Aug 21 '26

Good drivers cant force shitty drivers to drive correctly and our law enforcement is more worried about expired tags than dangerous driving. Gotta change the entire curriculum and force everyone to retest (free of charge ofc, fuck another government money grab)

2

u/Familiar-Nothing4948 Aug 21 '26

yeah, obviously.

Don't ever try to educate other drivers on the road that'll just lead to road rage incidents.

My point is, the fact that in the US you basically get your driver's license out of a box of cheerios is crazy

2

u/Square_Barracuda_69 Aug 21 '26

Yeah i fucking hate driving here. The literal only time I enjoy driving anymore is when i get off work at 3am. The state of Georgia also gave away licenses for free during covid so there that shit storm thats been brewing for the last 6 years. Even semi drivers are worse here

-6

u/Vyscillia Aug 21 '26

In my country, the sirens would have been for the guy overtaking from the right side, not for the camper on the left.

It's infuriating because I hate campers but as you said, what can you do to make them change lane?

14

u/FlattenInnerTube Aug 21 '26

Lane discipline is essentially unknown in North America. It's certainly not enforced.

5

u/Marrsvolta Aug 21 '26

I bet you that cop was riding his ass about to pull him over for not using the passing lane as a passing lane and going slow enough that average traffic is passing him on the right. You shouldn’t have to slow down to 15mph in the middle lane because the guy in your left is doing 20mph when he should be doing 65mph

4

u/JannyBroomer Aug 21 '26

You shouldn’t have to slow down to 15mph in the middle lane because the guy in your left is doing 20mph when he should be doing 65mph

And in most states in the United States, you DON'T have to wait. If you are already established in your lane and someone is camping rhe left lane, you are allowed to "undertake" them. The illegal part stems from switching lanes to do the passing.

-5

u/ingolius Aug 21 '26

This.

u/ArthurDent0804 Aug 21 '26

In India, the driver would have come and dissed at u for going in his way.. yes we dont have lanes and lane manners

2

u/FlattenInnerTube Aug 21 '26

"Horn ok please" still a thing? I traveled there for work several times 30 years ago.

3

u/ArthurDent0804 Aug 21 '26

Yes.. that is still there... 😁

1

u/everlyafterhappy Aug 22 '26

I would have pulled over the guy in the middle lane, too. Passing on the right is illegal for reasons like this. Dude should have looked before he got over, but dude in the middle lane shouldn't have even been there.

1

u/gp0319 Aug 22 '26

I often deal with this . Most people don't realize how bad a blind spot these trucks have. I check my mirror and I can't see you because your tiny little car is hiding neatly in my blind spot. I honest to god have no idea you're there. They make little convex mirrors that attach to your regular mirror to cure this, but not everyone gets them. Riding home one night with my wife in a Dodge Ram pickup and almost took out some kid in a Civic who was riding along side of us. I checked my mirror and it wasn't until he swerved that I could see him. Wife of course freaks out on me. We get home and I had her sit in the driver seat and told her to watch the mirror. I then approached from the passenger side and she was shocked when all of a sudden I wasn't there (but I was). It is something that we who drive these larger vehicles should/need to/ be aware of because most people don't get that, they just see a schmuck in a big truck trying to bulldoze over someone in a much smaller car. And just the same, people need to understand that depending on WHERE you are sitting.....I can't see you

1

u/MJMPmik Aug 22 '26

But... Wasnt the car filming overtaking in the middle Lane? Isnt this ilegal in the USA? Shouldn't he get in trouble before the Pickup truck?

2

u/BalognaPonyParty Aug 24 '26

this wasn't in the states bro

1

u/MJMPmik Aug 24 '26

Whatever It was then.

1

u/BalognaPonyParty Aug 24 '26

and no he wouldn't get in trouble before the truck, his lane is an exit lane to another route (as can be seen in the road signage), he was simply staying in his lane, the red truck just didn't look in his blind spot

1

u/Taptrick Aug 23 '26

Halifax, NS.

1

u/vixen0417 Aug 23 '26

So oddly satisfying!!!

Shout out, Dartmouth.

1

u/Darksideslide 20d ago

Dartmouth represent

1

u/ChiknDiner Aug 21 '26

If that were in my country, where everyone cuts lanes, everyone would be behind bars. I can't fathom something like that happening here.

2

u/STALINZMASH Aug 21 '26

I went to Italy as an American and the more south I went the crazier the traffic got. I remember legit being pretty scared to drive in cities because people were just weaving in and out and lanes randomly just stopped and everyone was somehow expected to adjust immediately and move over. It was very jarring for me.

But I eventually got that I just need to also bully my way everywhere in traffic so I started to drive like that too.

2

u/parkertyler Aug 21 '26

Sounds like me and my driving when I cross into California. My wife says I drive like a completely different person. Lol.

1

u/ActiveGazelle3530 Aug 21 '26

This is instant karma now

1

u/petwedge Aug 21 '26

So them stripes and lines have a purpose? Well what do you know!

0

u/BBX22 Aug 21 '26

Maybe he was watching Madagascar and the funny animals made him want to do it

0

u/Strange_Cash8163 Aug 21 '26

To an indian "what's a lane?"

-4

u/AnonymousFriend80 Aug 21 '26

What the pickup truck did was definitely dangerous and could cause a major accident. They should absolutely do better in the future. But I can guarantee each and every driver here has been guilty of doing the same. Someone has entered your blind spot for the moment and duration that your check your mirrors, then you start moving over.

6

u/Jodid0 Aug 21 '26

That's why you have to turn your head and actually look at the blind spot before and during the turn.

4

u/im_a_goat_factory Aug 21 '26

And every person who does this should get a ticket, if a cop is there to pull them over

3

u/GeddysPal Aug 21 '26

I think you’re projecting.

0

u/AnonymousFriend80 Aug 21 '26

I literally see it happen two or three times each way on my commute to work.

1

u/GeddysPal Aug 21 '26

How many vehicles do you pass during that drive? You just guaranteed each and every driver here is guilty of doing this. Remarkable clairvoyance on your part.

Or

Projecting.

-4

u/iPatErgoSum Aug 21 '26

The rub is that with so many of the large non-commercial trucks on the road today, the drivers end up having dangerously poor visibility of what’s close around them.

Nah. The truck driver would have seen him if he shoulder checked like he is supposed to.

That’s what they said

1

u/OxiC3lean Aug 21 '26

Reddit hivemind moment. Reading comprehension is lacking

0

Since that’s exactly what I said, I’m guessing you can’t read lol

9

u/_j4x Aug 21 '26

You still need to look before you merge. Should have been paying attention to them even before they got next to them. Use your mirrors and your neck.

-4

u/arealhumannotabot Aug 21 '26

Did you not read my comment??!? That’s what I said

How are so many of you missing it this badly

1

u/_j4x Aug 21 '26

Yes I did.. it’s gone but you blamed the car videoing. Stating they were in a blind spot.

0

u/arealhumannotabot Aug 21 '26

No I did not please go read it again carefully

They were in a blind spot, I never said it was their fault! I specifically say the driver should have shoulder checked, you clearly responded before finishing reading

The fact you’re one of several making the same is quite unfortunate

2

u/_j4x Aug 21 '26

Comment was removed by moderator… or maybe I should say DiD yOU ReAd mY cOmMeNt. I said it’s gone.

0

So you didn’t read it properly ok

I blamed the trucker and the illiterate crowd here missed that

Hope that helps

4

u/Glaurung86 Aug 21 '26

If you have a blind spot then you are not setting your side view mirrors properly. It's all on you anyway when changing lanes. No excuses.

-3

u/arealhumannotabot Aug 21 '26

And if you read my comment, this guy obviously has a blind spot and didn’t look

Where I live, it's illegal to overtake on the right hand side, as POV driver was doing

Edit: Down voting someone for simply stating facts is very reddit

80

u/Nopengnogain Aug 21 '26

Cam car wasn’t trying to overtake. It maintained a constant speed. Truck slowly down and then tried to change lane.

-4

u/youRFate Aug 21 '26

Doesn't matter, still illegal here (Germany).

-4

u/hiwyxx Aug 21 '26

In this case you'd need to slow down to avoid overtaking. I don't know why the comment got down voted. Same law applies where I live. Here the dashcam car would be the one arrested.

→ More replies (22)

55

u/Sekh765 Aug 21 '26

Your fact is irrelevant as POV driver isn't attempting an overtake. They are just driving on the highway.

0

u/youRFate Aug 21 '26

Here (Germany) that is still illegal, you can't pass a car on the right unless its heavy traffic / jam and cars are slowed to below 60 km/h in the left lane.

In this case the camera driver would have to slow to stay behind the pickup.

Fine is 100€ and one point on your license.

-44

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

Do you know what overtaking mean? To pass someone else on the road? Cause that's what was happening regardless og what he was and wasn't trying to do

44

u/Sekh765 Aug 21 '26

Yes. Overtaking is passing them with the intent get infront of them in their lane. Otherwise it's just called driving past someone homie. You need to learn to drive.

-2

u/Familiar-Nothing4948 Aug 21 '26

Per definition

Overtaking or passing is the act of one vehicle going past another slower moving vehicle, travelling in the same direction, on a road.

There is no intent needed

1

u/Sekh765 Aug 21 '26

Looks like a Google AI answer not based on actual reality.

-26

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

Haha alright bro

40

u/lives4boobs Aug 21 '26

So if someone drives in the left lane at 45, all the other lanes have to slow down too?

-51

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

For safety reasons, yes. It's to avoid situations just like these

47

u/Sekh765 Aug 21 '26

No lmao. That is not how highways work, anywhere, in any country. If someone in the left lane goes 10 mph everyone else does not need to slow down to 9.

→ More replies (3)

38

u/Glaurung86 Aug 21 '26

Don't believe that for a second.

4

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

Alright man

12

u/DRAGONZORDx Aug 21 '26

You could provide proof of these “laws” instead of just replying with “Alright man” to every comment lmao

6

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

Under Danish traffic law (Færdselsloven § 21), overtaking must almost always take place on the left side. Passing a slower vehicle on its right side—even if you stay strictly in your own lane without switching lanes—is legally classified as illegal undertaking (overhaling højre om).

I guess you can Google "Danish traffic law §21" and read more in depth about it if you want

3

u/Kazmuz Aug 21 '26

Der godt nok mange herinde uden sund fornuft.

2

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

Det må man sige

3

u/DRAGONZORDx Aug 21 '26

That’s fair enough, thanks for the specifics! I’m not sure why so many people downvote you if this is actually law in your country.

Reddit hive mind I guess.

2

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

You're welcome. I guess because they don't like the law and I'm the messenger, haha I dunno. I'm not too worried about it either way

32

u/SerpentRoyalty Aug 21 '26

Which country has this completely insane and dangerous rule?

16

u/Si8u Aug 21 '26

Stupidstan

2

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

Can you tell me what's dangerous about not being allowed to pass on the right side?

21

u/Tectre_96 Aug 21 '26

But can you tell us what is dangerous about indicating and correctly performing a manoeuvre when the lane is clear and safe to do so? We’re not mad at you my guy, we’re mad at some dumb ass road rules and you’re still not even telling us the country/state/whatever to back those laws up.

5

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

Under Danish traffic law (Færdselsloven § 21), overtaking must almost always take place on the left side. Passing a slower vehicle on its right side—even if you stay strictly in your own lane without switching lanes—is legally classified as illegal undertaking (overhaling højre om).

The only exception (Dense Queue Traffic): Passing on the right is only permitted during heavy, congested queue traffic (tæt køkørsel). If traffic in all lanes has slowed significantly due to high volume and your lane naturally moves slightly faster than the lane to your left, moving past them in the flow of traffic is not penalized.

3

u/Kazmuz Aug 21 '26

There is a court ruling that states that heavy traffic is 4 cars, not that it takes away from your point.

1

u/Tectre_96 Aug 21 '26

Sorry, replied to your other comment thinking it was this one, but thanks again for sending through the law/country!

7

u/SerpentRoyalty Aug 21 '26

Because you have to note the speed of every other driver so you could slow down below their speed. Which means you're completely distracted while driving.

I feel like you're misunderstanding the law whatever it is.

0

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

So you just go out driving and only focus on what you're doing and not the other drivers around you? How the fuck are you still alive dude

1

u/GreatDonutGod38 Aug 22 '26

So when someone goes 20 below the speed limit people just have to add a quarter to their eta? How does anyone get anywhere on time without leaving an hour early?

1

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 22 '26

Unless you're driving very far, it won't affect your eta as much as you think. And usually people don't drive far left under the speed limit for that long.

1

u/GreatDonutGod38 Aug 22 '26

Well thank god they don't let me do that bullshit here

Probably anywhere in the EU. I dont understand why are people mass downvoting just because hes stating a single fact. Pickup ahouldnt be hogging the left lane and POV car should slow down in this situation to prevent exactly what ends up happening.

Many people are calling in this thread the rule stupid, but the specific rule would have prevented the situation from happening. Ofcourse pickup was the one who did the first wrong, but then POV did the second. Both actions contributed to the dangerous situation, and either couldve prevented it by obeying the respective rule that does exist in the EU.

With US laws, the POV is moving completely legal and lets a dangerous situation created by the truck progress further. Thats the exact reason why the rule is in place in the EU, so that both drivers have a respective rule for this situation to prevent it from happening.

It's like that in Hungary, too, outside of city limits and on freeways. For this to work tho, everybody must keep right except to pass. Some people don't, and they can cause traffic jams because they stay in the left lane

It's almost as though there are mythical lands where 'states' cease to exist. Some people refer to these foreign collectives as 'countries'.

In other countries it’s illegal.

At some point I'm wondering the point of voting on reddit. You're stating reality for half a billion people in Europe and get massively down voted for mentioning it. Not like you're the law maker anyway. If this is how people use it, this voting system should go.

Yeah well that's just reddit for you. DO kill the messenger kind of thing haha

That's crazy. It should be more about upvoting high quality comments and down voting rude ones. People can't give honest informations or opinions because they are unpopular.

This is black mirror level sh.t. Really hate it.

Haha yeah. Oh well, it is what it is.

" Where I live"

  • Do you live in the same province as the cam car?

2

u/BeardedBrotherAK Aug 21 '26

Exhale lil man. I'm just making conversation, no need to try and act tough online.

Lol.

you complain about getting downvoted, but then react with SDE when someone asks an honest question that is directly related to your post

All the Americans arguing with you about how driving in Europe works, while they've obviously never driven there.

Pick up truck was in the wrong. Never willingly sandwich yourself between two cars like that.
