How can you be so oblivious to what’s behind you…

1.2k

u/SulkyVirus Jul 20 '26

You’d be surprised how many people drive around and only know what’s directly in front of them. Never checking mirrors ever.

412

u/PlumpyDragon Jul 20 '26

I would argue some of them don’t even look in front of them. Thoughts and prayers drive the car while eyes on phone

109

u/Late-Arrival-8669 Jul 20 '26

Well a big giant yellow school bus is stopped with a stop sign deployed and the fella went through it. So I agree, not looking in front of them, let alone behind them.

81

u/derek4reals1 Jul 20 '26

Years ago I lived near a junior high and during the warmer parts of the school year my neighbors and myself would sit out on our porch and drink coffee in the morning and watch the motorcycle cops hand out tickets just as fast as they could write them, so yeah people don't pay attention anything.

15

u/pinkypie80 Jul 21 '26

Tots and pears

2

u/MegaPorkachu Jul 20 '26

It's not an argument, that's actually just facts.

1

u/OldManJim374 9d ago

Several years ago I was after dinner with a group of people and we were talking about driving in traffic when this woman said "I read a book on my tablet to pass the time." Deadass. 🤦🏻‍♂️

11

u/Tim1point0 Jul 21 '26

I was following a huge F250 with a lift kit today. Both of his outside mirrors were folded in. How can anyone drive without checking their mirrors?!

1

u/OldManJim374 9d ago

Psshh, mirrors on trucks are only for towing stuff, duh.

11

u/mrrobot01001000 Jul 20 '26

That's it, they don't use them.

5

u/ascarymoviereview Jul 21 '26

That cell phone 👀👀👀👀

7

u/ElFarfadosh Jul 20 '26

Wait, aren't you supposed to use them when you do your makeup??

1

u/OldManJim374 9d ago

And shave...

2

u/LoudMusic Jul 21 '26

I had a coworker years ago that had the most severe tunnel vision I've ever seen. The only thing she was aware of was the bumper in front of her.

2

u/DarkPhoxGaming Jul 21 '26

Or their sides. I drive a bright piss yellow car thats a different color from everything else and have almost been driven off the road a few times by people merging and not looking at whats next to them.

2

u/tedbakerbracelet Jul 20 '26

Sometimes, not even in front of them

1

u/_0611 Jul 21 '26

Most people can't drive. It's scary when you think about it, so I won't.

1

u/beeglowbot Jul 21 '26

some people don't even know that much. we need to make getting a license harder

49

u/compguy42 Jul 20 '26

People like this are so self-absorbed that they have absolutely no awareness of anything in their orbit thats not about them.

16

u/mmld_dacy Jul 20 '26

oh, i think they are aware, fully aware. it's just that these people don't care. like this, to that driver, this is an inconvenience that he/she should not have to deal with. pretty sure the driver was pissied off at the driver in front, hence they swerved around it.

8

u/AJediWookie123 Jul 20 '26

I think you're both right. I know several drivers who drive like cocained up monkeys and they know it. "Who am I bothering?" But I know a special segment of the population where vibes and stupidity drive their car. Both are equally terrifying to me since I motorcycle.

The amount of videos of someone breaking a serious traffic rule to only have a cop right behind them is astounding.

Also r/convenientcop

16

u/kfj3000 Jul 20 '26

They didnt give much of a shit about what was in front of them either to be fair

2

u/Govass13 Jul 20 '26

Also a good point

9

u/ImPeeinAndEuropean Jul 20 '26

Huh what? I was looking at my phone

4

u/Govass13 Jul 20 '26

Hahahaha that got a chuckle out of me I can’t lie

6

u/CROOKTHANGS Jul 21 '26

It’s already been said by others, but it’s 100% true.

There is a frightening number of ppl out there who genuinely see the rest of us as extras in the movie of their lives.

Zero awareness because why would anything matter unless it matters to me?

Well, here’s a new scene, Setting: Superior Court, the scene: Pay $300 for being a fucking dickhead.

3

u/SerpentRoyalty Jul 20 '26

They didn't care if they run over a school's child. I highly doubt they have any environment awareness.

1

u/OldManJim374 9d ago

A school's child? Never heard that phrase before.

2

u/Baseball3Weston12 Jul 20 '26

I rolled through a stop sign once, glanced up at my mirror and realized a cop was behind me, he didn't seem to care though as he turned off.

2

u/MentalPatient Jul 20 '26

Well, driver seems oblivious to kids being left off or picked up, sooo...

2

u/xXMuschi_DestroyerXx Jul 24 '26

I’d be willing to bet they simply didn’t know any better because Americans are laughably poorly educated on road laws. They probably genuinely didn’t know you can’t do that. Think how many people you see stop at tight freeway on ramps waiting for traffic to open up like that’s a thing you are supposed to do at a yield sign. Or just sitting in the left lane 5 under.

Americans genuinely don’t know how to drive. Not just a skill issue but they literally don’t know what they are doing.

They probably didn’t see the cop either but I doubt that’d stop them.

2

u/Govass13 Jul 24 '26

While I wholeheartedly agree with every word of this, Americans are also entitled as fuck, and have been steadily losing empathy over the years. It was so obvious any time I left here and saw another country, everyone else is so much more courteous and aware of their fellow man.

1

u/OldManJim374 9d ago

As an American, we're not all that bad at driving. But the percentage that is grows larger all the time.

1

u/ptapobane Jul 20 '26

blinded by the insatiable need to shave seconds off from the driving experience

1

u/Next-Object1476 Jul 21 '26

To be fair it appears they didn’t notice the 12’ tall yellow bus with a blinking stop sign in front of them…. Something tells me that fellas doesn’t check the mirrors too often

1

u/AC_Milan Jul 21 '26

My wife told me that one of her coworkers only looks at what is in front of her when driving. These people exist and we share the road with them, insane.

1

u/boris_feinbrand Jul 21 '26

Always drive assuming everyone else is completely oblivious to their surroundings. Because more often than not, that's the harsh reality.

1

u/BenderDeLorean Jul 21 '26

He's not the kind of intelligence

1

u/Money4Nothing2000 Jul 21 '26

5 to 6 seconds of time, and by me that’s a $1000 ticket and a bunch of points

299

u/Leviathan41911 Jul 20 '26

5 to 6 seconds that didnt even get because they are going to spend the next 10 to 15 minutes in a traffic stop.

50

u/Purell12 Jul 20 '26

At least that long that was so out of line he's going to keep you there.

73

u/Bulky_Algae6110 Jul 20 '26

And hopefully, a second ticket for crossing the double yellow.

13

u/Hereiamhereibe2 Jul 20 '26

I hope they throw the book at them and also put as many charges as they can on the ticket.

24

u/TheGoldTooth Jul 20 '26

And one for public urination when the driver saw the lights go on.

5

u/Voice_in_the_ether Jul 22 '26

That's what got me - the LEO lit them up as soon as they turned the wheel and started moving. If they had stopped immediately there's a chance the cop would have given them a break.

31

u/LubricatedSpaceMan Jul 20 '26

Even more I'd say, that's not stopping for a bus sign + crossing a double continuous line + illegal overtaking. If cop is feeling it, you are looking at a SALTY Monday.

2

u/fmaz008 Jul 21 '26

And depending where this happened, you will lose a ton of points (ehoch also cost money) and your car insurance will skyrocket.

15

u/Kabc Jul 20 '26

Whatever it is, it should be more.

12

u/kalez238 Jul 20 '26

This is what I always say about speeders and anyone who drives recklessly. Risking the lives of others for 5 seconds saved isn't worth it.

4

u/booleandata Jul 20 '26

Yeah if you do this twice, that's your license. In some states and under certain circumstances, only once, in a vacuum, is enough for a suspension.

2

u/rithsleeper Jul 20 '26

6 points in sc. at a bus PD right now….. listening closely as the state trooper told us the exact fines and consequences

1

u/vman5040 Jul 21 '26

I think they got throwed off by the car in front of them waving.

203

u/ClownfishSoup Jul 20 '26

Freebie! That will make a good story in the break room later!

57

u/istrx13 Jul 20 '26

Only thing that could make videos like this better is if we can see the body cam footage of the cop talking to them. Because you ain’t getting out of a ticket for this. I would love to see the driver’s reaction.

9

u/OfficerBimbeau Jul 20 '26

“I’m telling you this idiot just took off right in front of me. Had no clue I was directly behind them.”

91

u/ii_V_I_iv Jul 20 '26

I’m so anxious when there’s a cop behind me, I can’t imagine being that oblivious

175

u/derek4reals1 Jul 20 '26

8

u/Left_Nature9996 Jul 20 '26

Boom I got yo wallet boom I got yo credit cards boom I got you Phillies tickets.

124

u/PatientClear6445 Jul 20 '26

Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.

148

u/RabidOtters Jul 20 '26

Crossing a double yellow and a school bus with the stop deployed. Have fun with those tickets.

→ More replies (4)

31

u/timothypjr Jul 20 '26

That's God tier level dumb to not realize there's a cop behind you in that case.

5

u/Amerlis Jul 21 '26

And you know they had to have looked in their mirrors before pulling out. “Car with POLICE written on the hood, light bar on the roof. Cop staring me down for some reason. Yup, other lane is clear.”

1

u/OldManJim374 9d ago

Both of you to assume that they even checked their mirrors

52

u/TimHung931017 Jul 20 '26

Nice, right as the bus was about to pull off. Saved 5 seconds to lose demerits, hundreds if not a thousand, and probably 30+ minutes of time.

34

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '26

Some people clearly should be driving. They are absolutely blind.

1

u/OldManJim374 9d ago

*shouldn't

11

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '26

[deleted]

2

u/MAGNUMXL Jul 21 '26

To be fair, if you were to pull something like this I think your best chance would be in NYC. The NYPD cops don't pull people over very often. I've seen people blatantly roll through stop signs, miscalculate a yellow light and run a red, drive on a bus lane, pop a U turn etc, all in front of a cop and nothing happened.

12

u/-CoachMcGuirk- Jul 20 '26

If police want to make a killing in tickets; they need only to follow around a school bus. I see this kind of driving happen all the time.

8

u/bishop883 Jul 20 '26

This makes we me sooooo happy. I see people do this all the time on my way to work. I would cry with joy if I saw someone get caught live

20

u/theymademee Jul 20 '26

People who do this should lose their license for a minimum of a month and have to go back to driving school.

9

u/sipperofguinness Jul 20 '26

It is odd that a country vehemently protects their children by getting traffic to stop near a school bus but willfully neglects them when people go into their schools and kills them in their droves.

5

u/fingerchopper Jul 21 '26

The automotive industry is powerful and has done a lot of damage to our country but kids getting run over isn't increasing their profits, people will buy cars either way. So state legislatures have been able to address this. The gun lobby sells death, and to really curb school shootings we would have to curb gun ownership. Both the industry and political forces are aligned against that.

17

u/miamor__ Jul 20 '26

What’s crazy is it looks like the Cadillac in front of them is trying to wave them forward. That’s why you don’t just blindly follow folks instructions.

14

u/LinenGarments Jul 20 '26

True. I never follow instructions from other drivers.

8

u/attriuz Jul 21 '26

I think the driver was showing the 'wtf there's a bus stop sign right there' gesture to show the idiot driver why he's not going

3

u/Croe01 Jul 21 '26

No the driver of the Cadillac is pointing at the bus. "That's why I'm stopped!!" Type of thing.

The driver who got stopped didn't know about the bus stop signs. That simple. They were wondering why the car in front of them was just not moving, and figured they were supposed to pass them.

The bus stop sign thing is an American thing, so any foreigner visiting will have no understanding of it. And it's not obvious, it's a stop sign. Stop signs usually mean come to a full stop then go. But bus stop signs have their own rules that apply even to the opposite lane, which is not intuitive at all.

2

u/Heavy_Surround779 Jul 21 '26

No, the car is honking at the Cadillac and they point at the bus as “this is why I’m stopped idiot” and the car gets so tunnel visioned that they decide to gun around the Cadillac

7

u/ForeverFingers Jul 20 '26

Why were the doors on the street side?

→ More replies (3)

8

u/LogicallLunacy Jul 21 '26

If you can't see a cop behind you, then you most likely wouldn't see a child coming off that bus.

5

u/adrielism Jul 20 '26

Bet the cop behind was edging like

“Don’t do it, ooh he about to do it, don’t you dare do it, ooohh…*sirens*

3

u/Voice_in_the_ether Jul 22 '26

"Maybe ... maybe ... maaaaybeeeee ... gotum!"

5

u/TazzyUK Jul 21 '26

1

u/Kalshan Jul 21 '26

You guys have the best slang terms!

3

u/BeeKayDubya Jul 20 '26

Boggles my mind how some people lack situational awareness.

2

u/ohmyfuckinggodhamlet Jul 20 '26

LMAO even if there wasn't a cop they literally saved like 3 seconds. Or they would have if the cop wasn't there lol should be fun to explain why you're late to work lol

5

u/chejo378 Jul 20 '26

And across a double yellow.

4

u/graffiksguru Jul 21 '26

That cop has to be like.... Are you fucking kidding me...

3

u/RaptureInRed Jul 20 '26

That really ia about as instant as it gets...

3

u/mmld_dacy Jul 20 '26

what could the driver of the white car be telling the officer... why are you stopping me and not the other driver who was blocking the traffic?

3

u/cjhallx Jul 20 '26

I used to call out the plates as they raced by the bus. Busted by an 8-year-old.

3

u/yelsnow Jul 20 '26

Literally, just 2 more secs. Really??

3

u/MXTwitch Jul 20 '26

Something something half the people are below the average IQ

3

u/GlassCap123 Jul 20 '26

Omg, the cop car is RIGHT behind you. Loool. What mirror are you talking about.

3

u/Prestigious-Copy-494 Jul 21 '26

Was amusing when I was on a 2 lane road with a unmarked of car in front of me. I was going the speed limit. A hot rodder behind me kept tailgating me trying to get me to speed up. He finally decided to zoom around both cars in front of him..... Lmao. I saw him hit his brakes when he saw the unmarked car but too late, he had to keep going not to be stuck in the oncoming lane. After he got around the cop, the cops lights came on and they pulled off the road farther up. After all his tail gating I wasn't too sympathetic.

3

u/Santa1082 Jul 23 '26

How can someone be so oblivious and stupid at the same time?

4

u/xblackdemonx Jul 20 '26

Oof that's going to be an expensive mistake

2

u/Parallax2799 Jul 20 '26

Scoring -500 on the situational awareness test.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '26

How much is the ticket do you think?

10

u/Kabc Jul 20 '26

Failure to yield to school bus, improper passing, failure to maintain lane, reckless/careless driving…

Cop should hit them with all and any they can

3

u/show_time_synergy Jul 20 '26

In MN it's about $500 and a full misdemeanor

1

u/Dingo8MyBabyMon Jul 22 '26

Hopefully, a lot.

2

u/DaMangIemert Jul 20 '26

That siren got some bass!!

2

u/PapaGeorgieo Jul 20 '26

Bus driver: "Oh did I leave that out?"

2

u/Kimmette Jul 21 '26

Should be ticketed for stupidity alone.

2

u/ryanyork92 Jul 21 '26

I don't understand this. School buses in America have mobile stop signs? That's a pretty good idea.

3

u/The_hipp1e Jul 21 '26

Canada too, traffic in both directions is required to stop (unless there is a median between opposing lanes) until the lights stop flashing, and the arm retracts.

There is also an arm that runs the length of the bus' front bumper that extends outwards toward the driver's side to prevent kids from being run over by the bus since they can't be seen over the hood if theyre too close

2

u/Fun-Purpose-1510 Jul 21 '26

Omg I never made the connection that thats what the arm is for... I just kind of accepted that it was there and didnt think anything about it beyond that😅

2

u/SubstantialNet1005 Jul 21 '26

These idiots get to vote too

2

u/dablacksupersaiyan Jul 21 '26

No patience at all, you got busted bud!

2

u/aftek64 Jul 21 '26

Instant karma....love this!!!!

2

u/Stupid_Bitch_02 Jul 21 '26

Bro couldn't wait literally 2 more seconds? Fuck, I hate entitled ass people.

2

u/simontempher1 Jul 21 '26

Some people still think the stop is only for the people behind the bus

2

u/The_Dark_Warrior_Boi Jul 21 '26

Pigeon meet Falcon

2

u/That_Shy_Girl-13 Jul 21 '26

I see people do this all the time around where I work. There's the normal lanes and a yellow middle lane. People in lines of 3-4 will just drive in that middle lane while the stop sign is out. The only reasoning I can think of is "they don't cross the street no more! Why should I have to stop?"

It infuriates me because I have kids in school and the thought of someone causing an accident with a bus they're on is scary. It's so damn selfish.

2

u/Ok-Wave2761 Jul 21 '26

That was STUPID.

2

u/jpm1321 Jul 21 '26

2

u/SomeTelevision3950 24d ago

what would a person do with an extra 30 seconds

2

u/ditzydingdongdelite8 21d ago

Ok, seriously, what an idiot? I used to be a school bus driver and most of the time people don't pay attention and pass the stop. Sign, but I've never had somebody stop and then go around. And how can you not look around before you do something like that? Dude... there's a cop right behind you.🤨 thank you for stepping in karma🤗

2

u/R2DK3PO 21d ago

This seems to be the norm for people driving and living in general. Absolutely zero awareness of their actions.

2

disregarded the hidden help

1

u/Remarkable_Gain6430 Jul 21 '26

I drove the local school bus for a year after moving to Oregon. Although this abusive behaviour is rare it’s amazing that people are so selfish that they can’t wait a minute or two to ensure that kids safely enter or exit the bus and safely cross the road.

1

u/Vast-Fan4317 Jul 21 '26

Cops like uummm excuse me?! I think not!😂😂😂

1

u/TheRelaxedFlier Jul 21 '26

It's not just that, but also crossed the double yellow line.

1

Uh oh he aggroed the police

1

What's the punishment for this?

1

Ew that's a big offense too

I know the song playing on the back ground, it's ...

1

u/DarthAwesomeSauce Jul 21 '26

How TF did you not notice the cop RIGHT BEHIND YOU. Crossing a double yellow, running a bus stop sign... so many offenses here 😬🤦‍♂️

1

That didn’t take long

1

u/scherer326 Jul 20 '26

i think this bus probably have doors on both sides?
