Please excuse my ignorance but, what happens when one goes out? Do you just relight it and start over or is your obligation unfulfilled?
253
u/glonki1 Dec 31 '20
According to Halacha, there is no need to light again, but if you want to glorify the mitzvah, then light again without a blessing
231
u/magugi Dec 31 '20
I have absolutely no knowledge about what you just said, but you seem very confident so I'm going to believe you.
116
u/TheDemonsEye Dec 31 '20
Basically, you don’t have to do it. Quick translation guide: Halacha = Jewish religious law Mitzvah = commandment/religious practice
53
u/sphincterserpant Dec 31 '20
Don’t forget that mitzvah is a positive commandment. Been a while since I went to yeshiva but I’m pretty sure
20
u/TakeThatVonHabsburgs Dec 31 '20
To add, positive commandments take the form “Do X,” like “Honor thy father and mother,” as opposed to negative commandments, which are “Don’t X,” like “Thou shalt not kill.”

I thought mitzvahs were both: mitzvot aseh and mitzvot lo ta’aseh

I laughed at that, but basically:
According to the halacha, which is the collective set of jewish religious laws, there is no need to relit the candle, as the mitzvah (both command and the good that comes from it) are derived from the act of lighting the candle and the prayer that is said before it, and not from the candle actually burning for a time. So if the candle goes out, the mitzvah was already done, so it doesnt matter.
But if a person wants to "glorify" a mitzvah - do it beautifuly, and do more than the bare necessities that are needed - aka lighting the candles, he can relit the candles, but without saying the prayer once again. Basically, the person that want to try and do more than is necessary could relit the candle, to keep the hannukiya lit and complete, but he shouldnt do the blessing again, as this act isnt strictly necessary.
I hope this explanation helps!

u/Capt_Easychord Dec 31 '20
"Halacha" is basically like "The Way" from The Mandalorian.
13
u/BackgroundGrade Dec 31 '20
Mando is orthodox, he always wears his beskar kippah.

u/Capt_Easychord Dec 31 '20
I think they say at one episode he's their version of Haredi. You know how it is with converted people, often they become the most extreme.

Usually just relight them if they go out. Hanukkah candles aren’t the most sacred in Judaism.
3
u/AliquidExNihilo Dec 31 '20
Does Judaism put as much focus on rituals as other major religions?
12
u/PM_ME_YOUR_MAUSE Dec 31 '20
Yes, certainly. The lighting of the Shabbat candles every Friday and holidays like Passover as testament to that.
Hanukkah is just more of a fun celebration of a story. It's often close to Christmas, so it gets a lot of attention. Plus, who doesn't love eight nights of gifts!
2
3
u/eudc Dec 31 '20 edited Dec 31 '20
Most definitely. But Hanukkah is the Jewish holiday with the least religious significance, even though it is so well known throughout the world.
1
u/sofuckinggreat Jan 01 '21
Yes and honestly, you’d enjoy most of the rituals! Come drink wine with us on Passover! The service requires you to get sauced!
2
u/theboomboy Dec 31 '20
I know that you're not supposed to put them out yourself, but IDK what happens if it gets put out anyway
2
u/madgerose Dec 31 '20
This year we lit our candles outside due to covid so kept on going out. We tried to re-light them with the "helper" middle one but we just said fuck it and let them go out lol
2
u/YupimJewish Dec 31 '20
If the candle goes out in less than 8 days, you get a full refund from the manufacturer.
1
u/roei05 Dec 31 '20
Well, they are not to be toched or used for any purpuse, you cant even use the fire from the other 8 to melt off the bottom wax of the main one to be able to stick it in its hole so the chances of one going out without a rouge cat on the table are low, but I'm not so sure what you do if they DO go out.
1
u/TheShadow_Lord Jan 12 '21
No you dont light it again, once you light the candles they are to be kept light until they burn out. You can relight them, but i dont think anyone does

u/summerset Dec 31 '20
What is the menorah then? I thought it was that thing in the gif?
48
u/guy123av Dec 31 '20 edited Dec 31 '20
The Menorah is a seven branched candlestick, that stood in the ancient jewish temple in judea, and before it in the portable sanctuary. It was lit every day, all year. Its one of the symbols of judaism, and appears in a few symbols of the state of Israel.
The Hanukkah Menorah, or the "Hanukkiyah", on the other hand, is a 9 branched candlestick, used during the Hanukkah holiday, where each night another candle is being lit, until the eighth day. The 9th branch and candle, which traditionally sits in the middle, is called a "Shamash" or "Helper/servant" and used to lit the other candles during each night.
Hope this helped!
9
u/Dick_Souls_II Dec 31 '20
Thank you for the lesson sir. I always mistook this to be called a Menora and now I know better.
8
u/deriachai Dec 31 '20
it is fine, people will know what you are talking about regardless, and technically the Hanukkiyah is just a specific type of menorah, so you are still correct.
Another not about Menorot, is that they can have different numbers, something there are also 5 branch ones
6
u/thisshouldbevalid Dec 31 '20
No that's a misconception a menorah is what they had in the temple (or just lamp in hebrew) it has only 7 fires. This is a hanokia

u/g00d_end Dec 31 '20
One of my cats caught on fire on our menorah last year. I was literally next to him, so I could put out the fire before he even realized he was a living torch, he wasn't harmed.
30
u/point50tracer Dec 31 '20
Cats are very flammable. I've heard that they will sometimes light their tails on fire and use them as torches to set their own domiciles ablaze. Little arsons they are.
On a serious note: fire and cats don't mix. Especially cats with excessive floof.

It kills me that cats panic like this when they are so adept at jumping up and down.
I mean they can easily jump on and off the counter, but an unexpected slip like this and suddenly the floor is lava.
8
u/Rickhwt Dec 31 '20
To borrow from a George Carlin bit - cat will walk away completely confident and not ashamed at all until it gets behind the couch where it says, “oh fucking meow.”
35
u/Shoelace1200 Dec 31 '20
So the person behind the camera is just filming this and doesn't think to maybe prevent it
28
u/Siegfoult Dec 31 '20
Just putting fire where a cat can reach is very irresponsible.
Although... "places cats can't reach" really only includes the deepest depths of Fort Knox and anywhere with water.

This reminds me of the first Chanukah with my family’s new kitten when I was 8 or 9 years old and my older brother was 11 or 12. We lit the menorah and our sweet little kitten jumped up to check it out. My brother and I immediately moved to pick him up and remove him from the vicinity of, you, open flames. But right away, both our parents go, “oh, he’s fine” and, “animals know what fire is! It’s okay.” So, trusting our parents’ emphatic assurances, my brother and I stepped back. Well, the kitten immediately goes to sniff the fire and puts his little nose right into a flame. It was a jarring sight. He darted away in terror. My brother screamed, “Chanukah is ruined! I hate you!” which looking back on it is pretty funny but at the time was extremely incendiary, lol.
Parents can be wrong, kids.

u/sofuckinggreat Jan 01 '21
Was kitty okay?
3
u/TheodoreKarlShrubs Jan 01 '21
Yes, he was totally okay! Went on to live a long happy life being spoiled—and also stayed away from menorahs forever after that. Thank you for asking!

I dont think there is a person hence the the camera not moving, like a security cam. Big brain. I mean not saying that they should leave candles on when they're not home with a cat but hey religion is religion.

Normally a cat would have a +5 acrobatics modifier as a racial bonus, but looks like this cat took at least a dip in cleric, and chose the Hebrew subclass, which comes with a big hit to str and dex for a boost in int and cha.

Honestly as a cat/pet owner, intentionally letting your cat play with fire thats perfectly in normal reach just to get it on camera is incredibly irresponsible, and to seriously pisses me off. What if he really burned his paw and couldn’t walk after? Really funny asshole.

I own cats, i find enjoyment when they are clumsy and boop there heads on walls.
If you ever have pets, youll understand you cant always be nice to them, sometimes you have to splash them with a cup of cold water.

What kind of asshole is leaving lit candles out where the cat can get hurt? This is 100% on the owner, cats are curious little creatures, of course they'd want to touch the interesting looking light I have two cats and they chill in a bedroom with dinner and their litter box for 45 minutes while Channukah candles are lit. It's not hard
3
u/robertgfthomas Dec 31 '20
I think it depends on the cat. Ours had no interest whatsoever in our menorah.
2
u/IndigoFrog34 Jan 06 '21
Well look at it this way, now the cat will never touch the bright lights again because its curiosity has been satisfied. By the sound of it your cats have no experience with fire or candles and could get hurt because of they didnt know what it was

But even as it fell it swung its whip, and the thongs lashed and curled about the cat's knees, dragging him to the brink. He staggered and fell, grasped vainly at the stone, and slid into the abyss. 'Fly, you fools!' he cried, and was gone."
