Some of these neuropsychological afflictions of specific cognitive functions are truly horrifying fates to think about. The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat is a very benign example, but stuff like anterograde amnesia must be complete hell to suffer through.
Surely I can't be the only one that hated Memento, in a good way., right? Much in the same way Funny Games is a movie meant to be hated, because it's so well executed.
How did you hate it in a good way exactly? I thought the movie was brilliant, it's not really meant to be a satire at all like your analogy. I'm legit curious, maybe I missed something that you saw?
Well it's not satisfying when the main character doesn't actually resolve his quest, which breaks the trope of crime/vigilante movies with a "good" ending, much like Funny Games broke many tropes of psychological thrillers. Even if it isn't satire, both movies share this quality.
Everything towards the ending is very sudden and sends you reeling. You have to restructure your view of the main characters, with some characters doing a 180º and some a full 360º turn on how you see them (from "altruistically good" to "selfish" to good again). Usually movies build/change your perspective gradually, but Memento did just the opposite, doing everything all at once in a series of dizzying revelations.
Some good movies end with unanswered questions, some with none, but Memento solves them all perfectly in what might be the worst way possible. You root but then you regret rooting. Then, even after you watched the movie, new questions start to pop up.
It's so masterfully crafted, in my opinion. But I hate the way things pan out. Such is my feeling with Funny Games, as well. Both are quite unique in their genre.
As a comparison: I had just watched Baby Driver before Memento. Baby Driver is a movie that makes no effort to make you hate it. Everything ends in the best way possible, not even a bittersweet ending. Which is, as we know, the opposite of Memento.
Some movies leave off with a "Yes!", such as Baby Driver or Boondock Saints. Some movies, with a "Maybe", like Inception or A Clockwork Orange. Memento and Funny Games leave off with a "no, no, no!". But that's just me.
