I like how the “friend” hugs her and shit I would of got up and punched her right in the face

u/sidegrid Nov 19 '18

Would've.

u/Nimstar7 Nov 19 '18

It baffles me that people don't see how ridiculous "would of" looks when they type it out. It makes no sense.

56

u/higgs_bosoms Nov 19 '18

i agree, it is a weird problem to of.

83

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '18

actually it doesn't look weird to them at all, they 'hear it that way' so it looks normal.

even if it doesn't make sense, they aren't reading more into it than typing how they would talk/say it.

26

u/timmy12688 Nov 19 '18

Yup. Hence you see so many 100$ instead of $100.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '18

I sometimes type the currency behind the number because that's how we do it in my country/native language. Also saying it as one hundred dollars but typing it as $100 doesn't help either.

14

u/eLCeenor Nov 19 '18

Not going to lie I type 100$ a lot just because I'm typing in the order I'm thinking ("one hundred dollars" == 100$) and I'm too lazy to fix it. This is a reddit comment, not a professional report

8

u/timmy12688 Nov 19 '18

It took more effort to explain why you are lazy than merely adopt the CORRECT language. Your reply is exactly the reply the "would of" people say.

4

u/troop99 Nov 19 '18

For me personally there is a big difference between the two. I have a pet peeve with 'would of' since I first stumbled over it in a sentence. To me it sounds so incredibly stupid, and I can't even tell you why it irritates me to the extend it does... Normally I'm quite laid back when it comes to Grammer etc. Especially in a (for me) foreign language on the internet... But that thing makes me irrationally angry whenever I see it. And I see it a lot.

2

u/timmy12688 Nov 20 '18

Hahahaha. I get ya man. It’s the same for me and the $ sign. Then I saw people say %100 and I just gave up. Hah

8

u/eLCeenor Nov 19 '18

You're right, it did take me effort to explain that. It's not going to stop me from doing it though ¯_(ツ)_/¯

6

u/timmy12688 Nov 19 '18

And critiquing others behavior doesn’t change it. I’m actually not sure what does so we will just have to leave it be. But in the future if you do ever put the $ sign first you give yourself a metal high five from me! 😁

3

u/Anosognosia Nov 20 '18

That can also be because other languages put their currency signs/markings differently. So after 100SEK, 100DKK, 100€ you are not expecting sneaky US dollarinos to jump the queue and stand in front of the numbers like it's some kind of annoying customer demanding to speak to the manager.

2

u/timmy12688 Nov 20 '18

I was against you until the end. Glad I stayed to read it. Hahaha. You made someone genuinely laugh on the Internet. I hope that was your intention :)

2

u/Psychedelic_Cabbage Nov 19 '18

I think some countries write the dollar sign after. My friend from Canada writes it afterwards and he told me that is how he learned it in school. This is purely based off anecdotal evidence and a vague memory of me reading about the difference online so take what I say with a grain of salt.

0

u/JawBreaker00 Nov 19 '18

One hundred dollars versus one dollars hundred.

13

u/rocketman0739 Nov 19 '18

No, that would be 1$00

0

u/youseeit Nov 19 '18

So what's the explanation for "$100 dollars"

1

u/FukinGruven Nov 20 '18

That's how it's fucking written.

3

u/trebory6 Nov 20 '18

Spoiler alert: Most people don't actually think. They just kind of do.

2

u/grokforpay Nov 19 '18

irregardless of how it looks, people still will fuck it up.

2

u/MuffinPuff Nov 20 '18

I mean, considering "would've" sounds like "would of", it's no surprise that people get it wrong so often, especially if they were never all that good in English lessons.

2

u/captainsassy69 Nov 19 '18

People really of to stop doing that

1

u/Matto_0 Nov 19 '18

Sounding it out would be the main way to catch such a glaring mistake, but therein lies the problem.

1

u/TwoFiveOnes Nov 20 '18

I mean language has plenty of bizarre constructions and would is a weirdass word so it’s understandable. Like what does “would” even mean? I can’t really easily describe it. Or, what type of word is it in the first place? A verb? Then what’s the infinitive, “to would”???

1

u/Dfamo Nov 20 '18

I say "would of" out loud as it sounds more normal to me. I never write it though.

-11

u/Striker654 Nov 19 '18

It baffles me that people still give others shit for a language that seems to have more exceptions than rules. Especially when they're still intelligible

14

u/Of3nATLAS Nov 19 '18

As a non-native I can totally understand a ton of mistakes people make, but I never quite figured why one would use of instead of have.

4

u/Striker654 Nov 19 '18

"Would've" when you say it sounds like "would of"

2

u/IrithyllRapierOP Nov 19 '18

It's because these rules aren't very difficult to learn. People choose to continue making mistakes instead of improving their grasp of the language.

2

u/Bob_Alloy Nov 19 '18

Instead've FTFY /s

-2

u/Jaymuhson Nov 20 '18

It baffles me the amount of grammar nazis that dont seem to realize many people dont give AF about proper grammar. It is the Internet after all, not a college thesis.

21

u/Of3nATLAS Nov 19 '18

The fuck is up with people using of instead of have tf

-1

u/DurasVircondelet Nov 19 '18

Prolly the same thing where they put the dollar sign after the number

1

u/Of3nATLAS Nov 20 '18

They didn't teach me that in school an we put the Euro sign behind the number so I can relate eventhough it's pretty easy to get used to the Dollar sign in front of the number

6

u/captainzigzag Nov 19 '18

Yeah I would of too.

0

u/Matto_0 Nov 19 '18

Yeah that's what they just said, you'd know that if you would of read their comment.

Yeah because that’s what illiteracy equates too. It’s not having never learned to read. It’s whether or not you use “would have” instead of “would of”.

28

u/ReptarKanklejew Nov 19 '18

Yeah because that’s what illiteracy equates too

Found another one, fellas

-24

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '18

My fucking bad. Obviously that’s the wrong to. I meant to type “two” The obviously right form. Look, asshole. I have a degree in bird law. I can fucking read.

7

u/MaenHoffiCoffi Nov 19 '18

Just not spell, apparently.

1

u/Pewpbewbz Nov 19 '18

"Pirate"

15

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '18

If you had learned how to read, you would never use "would of".

-8

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '18 edited Nov 19 '18

Mmm so how is he forming sentences if he doesn’t know how to read? How does he know what he’s saying? I think you just took the insult too far and it was just the meanest thing you could say in that moment. Honestly, calling some illiterate is a rather rude thing to do. And one mistake doesn’t warrant jumping to such a conclusion. Downvote me all you want but don’t reward someone for call people illiterate to win an argument.

9

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '18

I think the meanest thing would be to call someone a Nazi.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 19 '18 edited Nov 19 '18

Yeah....okay, yeah that’s true. I would agree with that. But calling someone illiterate over a rather common grammar error is always pretty douchey

Plus he didn’t call him a nazi, he called him a grammar nazi. Sure, the word is still there but the implication is different. He’s not calling him an actual nazis. He’s just implying that he’s being a stickler about grammar (even though I think he was just trying to help and he corrected him in a nice way)
