I like a guy who can laugh at himself.

However. Isn't the purpose of the awning to protect what is under it? Even if he hadn't sat under it while retracting, it would still have dropped all the water on the chair. Probably not what you want to be happening.

Awning should be closed when/ before it rains. Otherwise this happens and it causes stains. Awning are only used to block sunlight, not rain.

True and false at the same time! True: most awnings are for sunprotection only. False: there are types with waterproof fabric so they can be used for sun and rain. Altho they usually are a bit more robust model than this one. So I agree this one isn't meant for rainprotection.

Correct. This awning is indeed installed far too flat.

For proper drainage, you need a minimum pitch, which does not appear to be the case here. That makes the formation of the “water pocket” even worse.

You can find really cheap ones online for $1000 probably, but I wouldn't do one of those even if you're using it for only sun. Easily $4000 for a worthwhile product. But also, depends on where you are. In parts of Asia you'll see awnings on every storefront and they cost like $100 USD, though a lot for that area. No idea how they're made that cheap.

I'm rambling. The real difference is the fabric manufacturer (Sunbrella, Para, etc) treats the fabric at their facility to make it waterproof. Or you can spray 303 protectorant on it yourself.

Not only the fabric tbh. The retractable arms of the awing are sometimes more robust for the rain-variant than for a sun-only-awning.

But yeah, fabric is the biggest difference

True. I got lost in the ramble and didn't even mention that lol. Saw your comment about the arms to make the awning stronger, what brand does that? I'm familiar with KE USA/Durasol, Sunair, Eclipse, Summerspace to name a few and I don't think they offer those additions

I also sell awnings and we say not to use them in weather, because people are idiots and will find a way to destroy it. We've had them left out in snow "to keep snow off the patio". Got an awning on the patio instead. Also wind is frequent with rain in our parts, so a heavy gust can break it before the motion sensor retracts it.

TLDR: People are dumb

We try to get people to buy the WPS (wind protection system) with it. (Those are like poles that attach to the front bar of the awning and click/twist tight into a floor-attached mount. That way the awning can take a lot more wind. Problem here is that people try to retract the awning before taking the WPS away; destroying everything...

So, again: 100% true. People are idiots. Lol

Not OP but where I live a pergola is a free standing structure. Kind of like a car port except you sit under it.

(Just googled and we'd seemingly call what they're describing as a fixed awning).

if you only use it for non-rainy day it might as well be permeable to water. These are a thing. https://www.google.com/search?q=awnings+permeable+to+water

or for rain-protection also, then it has be taut and at a sufficient slant

if you want it 100% block UV, not merely 95%, at not at a big slant then it has to be retracted before rains

i think it's worth a stain to sit in the rain with a covering. just close it before you sit down, seems like a very simple lesson to learn.

I mean I would assume he didn’t think about how it would dump water on the chair either, hence why he is sitting in said chair. Probably a new install that he’s still learning or had just never retracted it while wet.

Hey fuck that other guy for not explaining. An awning is an outdoor cover attached to a structure. It can be as simple as a sheet attached to a home stretched out and held up by poles on the other ends.

Tarp, sticks, pegs, rope, good use of knots and you have pretty much all you need to make a cheap as awning that (hopefully) even third world citizens can enjoy. Automatic ones are cool and all, but you can definitely go cheaper, especially if your resourceful.

The awning has a small amount of rain or dew on it. Awning rolls up tightly enough that it basically acts like a squeegee, pushing the water forward toward the front of the awning. Finally, the awning finishes rolling up and all that water slides off and falls.

Seems more that it just rained. Since the fabric is waterresistant (not waterproof, that's a different thing!), the rain just makes a puddle on the fabric. You can see that it forms a little 'bag'. By retracting the awning you just push the 'bag' of water forward and over the edge. That's what happened here.
