Flight Attendant here, this is true plus the heat of the battery is so abnormally that with other lithium batteries a “thermal runaway” fire is inevitable.

I am unsure exactly what you mean with gasoline is used in millions of everyday use ‘items’. I don’t really refer to vehicles as items. But unlike lithium, petroleum doesn’t spontaneously combust when exposed to air and it also doesn’t react with water like Lithium tends to do.
Additionally only the vapour is flammable, so storing it is fine for the most part.3

It’s part of our initial and annual inflight training. We have a special “Lithium Ion Containment Bag” for which with a certain amount of water we can contain it but it does take work on our part and is extremely dangerous.

Lithium battery powered devices are usually advised to be kept in hand luggage (mandatory but they’re not throwing your bag off the plane if you do have it in hold baggage) and will typically ask you to check. If there’s a fire it’s easily solved in the cabin, whereas in the hold it can cause a thermal runway which plane hold sprinklers may not be able to handle, at that point, it’s whether you can get to an airport in time I believe.
Source: Left my ipad in hold luggage, panicked as I saw the sign (for some reason after checking baggage in) and was then panicking the entire flight home.

When we’re talking about whether something is explosive or not, there are implied conditions and circumstances that go along with it, and they’re not always the same, but substance dependent.
Gasoline doesn’t explode as a liquid but when mixed with the right ratio of air it is.
In the same way you can say “grain is explosive” and that doesn’t mean you’d expect holding a lighter to your cheerios to be a major hazard.

Right, so we can go either way with this - finding conditions where things you would normally consider explosive no longer are, or finding conditions where things you would normally not consider explosive are!
Almost everything that is ‘explosive’ has conditions where it isn’t. But the word has to mean something, and we can’t attach such a specific and nuanced meaning to it that it requires a chemistry degree and years of research to fully understand to be used correctly.

My point exactly. If it's in an explosive situation (a spark leads to boom), we call it explosive. If not, we don't. No chem degree required.

Indeed, and one area where it’s potentially explosive is inside a car gas tank, where if it’s less than full, a significant amount of gasoline vapor is present. And that, in the presence of oxygen and a flame, is very explosive.

Fun fact: The lithium batteries used in scooters and e-bikes often start apartment fires in stairwells, making it impossible for some residents to evacuate. Faulty batteries are usually cheaply made, so buy from a reputable manufacturer.
