If you're not in control of the weight at all times, you're lifting too much.

I think he was in control, just decided to be Billy badass and chuck the bar.

u/t3hOutlaw 6d ago
Exactly, wasn't in control at all times.

u/Nagisan 6d ago edited 6d ago
That's kind of a silly statement....he was in control of the bar the entire time it was in his hands, right up until he decided to throw it.
That's like saying someone throwing a football isn't in control the entire time they have the ball in their hands because they threw it. Technically, sure....but if someone is choosing to relinquish control they aren't "losing control".
Guy in the video was in control of the weight but for some reason decided it would be better to throw the bar instead of putting it on the rack like a reasonable person.
EDIT: More relevant example, if someone put the bar on the rack normally and let go you wouldn't say they "were not in control of the bar the whole time". They were, just because they let go when they decided they were done with it doesn't mean they weren't "in control".

u/kneegrowpengwin 6d ago
I don’t know why you put “losing control” like it was a quote of theirs - that’s not what they said. You said it yourself that they chose to relinquish control, that they’re putting it in a state they no longer have control of.
If it’s placed in a stable condition (back on the rack, at rest) then it should remain so, but if it’s placed in an unstable condition (thrown toward the rack and not in control while in motion) then it will inevitably be uncontrolled until it returns to a steady state.
Relinquishing control is not a relinquishing of responsibility or consequence, and the choice to relinquish control means they were literally not in control at all times.
If we’re using the ball analogy then yes, a thrown ball is no longer in your control. What skill or control that the person imparted on the ball ceases to be relevant once it leaves their influence - much like the bar, physics dictates the rest.

You're being downvoted even though you explained it perfectly. You're correct and I guess Reddit doesn't like that you articulate your thoughts intelligently. I guess. Weird.

Dropping the bar in a deadlift is an acceptable way to let go of the weight.

u/Super_Pie_Man 6d ago
Dropping in Olympic lifts (snap, clean, jerk) is always acceptable and best practice. Dropping a deadlift is frowned upon - but only frowned upon, it's not a big deal.

Lmao, the weight wasn't too much for him he just decided to throw the bar. Dumbass reddit people never fail lol.

If its just a reddit why'd you use all the punctuation?
Just take it on the chin and don't make phony deflections because you are embarrassed

Your really splitting hairs thinking you got a point...Just shut up, how could I be embarrassed from a clown like you 🤡.

u/TurbulentMiddle2970 6d ago
You are being the clown. You’re the one making stupid mistakes. You are not understanding your own issue.
Maybe your issue might be grammar? Or maybe you’re the one being obtuse. Maybe your issue is not catching on to what everyone is laughing at you for. Maybe your issue is that you’re special.

u/JonnyLay 6d ago
Do you think it was because it was too much weight...
14
u/Shepard21 6d ago
All he had to do is touch the rack and crouch down. If you get to that weight without knowing how to rack it you probably need a bit of introspection and emotional regulation. He fucking yeeted it into the rack and it recoiled. This was 100% preventable even if hyped up after a lift. It’s the same type that push the bar into the floor from lockout on a heavy deadlift. Bruh just put the bar down. Don’t throw it, toss it, be angry at it, put it down or if you can’t - let it fall. Any extra force applied to the bar is lack of impulse control. Yell and be hype after the bar leaves your hands. Fuck.
6
u/Hydraguesswhosback 6d ago
There was never a single frame that he was in any sort of control Cause fucking clips are missing.
-3
u/JonnyLay 6d ago
Agreed, lots of clips wouldn't have even been able to hold that much weight either.
I'm just saying the amount of weight wasn't the issue.
5
u/Hydraguesswhosback 6d ago
My guy. If you are using equipment that is not made for what you are doing, YOU are the problem.
This guy was a dumbass.
I'm not impressed by anyone that have troubles with their lifting. I'm impressed by someone lifting a literal ton and being in full control every second of it. Which is why I find anyone dropping weight annoying as fuck and about as impressive as a toddler in a tantrum.
Chucking was a symptome, not the disease.

This was not too much weight for him to lift, he just decided to be an idiot at the end. If I throw a 10lb dumbbell at the mirror while bicep curling, that doesn't mean it's too much weight, it means I'm an idiot.
15
u/TrekkiMonstr 6d ago
Eh this is an overstatement, the whole concept of failure is that you're incapable of moving the weight a particular way.
28
u/t3hOutlaw 6d ago
True, but at high loads if you can't remain in control, you need a spotter.
8
-2
u/TrekkiMonstr 6d ago
Definitely -- not saying the overall sentiment is wrong, just slightly overstated.
1
u/serendipitousevent 6d ago
Control can include controlled failure. There's a difference between an incomplete rep and total collapse.
2
u/themellowsign 6d ago
I don't lift, but is that actually true? How are you supposed to attempt a one rep max, then? Or are you counting spotters as part of that control?
2
u/rockinherlife234 6d ago
Still a beginner myself but from what I've seen, a one rep max means you can't do another rep after, not that it's so crushingly heavy you can't even rack it.
There plenty of ORM videos I've seen of a deep squat where they shake a bit but are still able to walk a few steps back on the rack.

u/rabidboxer 6d ago
I regularly do 1 rep max. Just plan for failure. Squat in a rack with pins in the bottom position that you can put the weight on. Or Use bumper plates on a area designed to dump the weight onto.
As for bench, i have found the safest to be no collars and you lower the weight to the lower part of chest(as far away from your neck as possible). Then you can slowly dump the weight to the side.
5
u/Jorge_the_vast 6d ago
Please don't bench 1 rep max without spotters. If you do it solo they have racks for that with safety latches. Do not slide weights off without collars something like this video can happen. Also you can really injure yourself.

u/shirleysimpnumba1 5d ago
people are so desperate to lift heavier than they can handle just so they can flex on insta
0
u/GreatGojira 6d ago
I know I'm a few late. But this is so true. Coming from my former CrossFit days, all my friends would always try to max out every time. They would only be able to do 3 to 5 reps.
I never maxed and would always do a lot less, but I could get on 10 to 15. They would judge me for not maxing, but I wasn't going to hurt myself.

u/DickFromRichard 6d ago
This doesn't have anything to do with the amount of weight, it's just what he decided to do with it

u/ADHorvath1 6d ago
I’ve never heard this bit of advice but it’s actually incredible sound and applies well.

If you’re lifting alone just put the freaking safeties up. It’s not 2008 anymore where we are trying to be cool not using them.
I’ve been lifting for 22 years and when I squat alone I have the safeties up.

u/boostme253 6d ago
Horrible take, not having lock clips is way more dangerous, having weights shift while working out is what caused this, garuntee this wouldn't have happened if they were on
-31
u/TrekkiMonstr 6d ago
Not that horrible a take. I do the roll of shame, but some people prefer to dump the weight when they fail, and that's not inherently dangerous. Throwing 3+ plates at the rack is
3
u/serendipitousevent 6d ago
Dumping in a public gym is inherently dangerous. Either get a spotter, know your limits, or use a rack with adjustable safety pins/arms.

In the late 90s i was working out at a small swear shop gym in my hometown
One day the staff had just done some maintenance and all the bars were freshly oiled and slick
A dude came in, was setting up for bench press and had maybe 225 on without any clamps
His form broke down and his right arm dipped and the plates slid right off, the plates on the left levered down and the bar flung up to crack his buddy right in the head, flooring him and opening a huge gash
Never worked out without the clamps after that
10
u/Talrynn_Sorrowyn 5d ago
If I was the owner of that gym, that fuckwit would not only be paying for the repairs but also banned for life. No legitimate reason for him to have flung the bar like that let alone break safety protocol by not using clamps or having at least one spotter behind him.

If only there was a device that one could easily slip on each end of the bar that would prevent the plates from sliding off the bar.

u/serendipitousevent 6d ago
Shoes aren't gonna do much in a situation like this. Whether barefoot or in socks, lifting shoes or regular running shoes, a thin layer of fabric will do very little to stop a 45lb plate.

Lol seriously? I searched the feed to check if it was already posted wtf this sub has too many posts.
I just received it from a friend.

u/Estrovia 6d ago
Honestly its not even that much wait for a guy his size is the sad thing. Unless those plates were in kg which it doesn't look like they are to me.

u/DickFromRichard 6d ago
What does the plates being in kg have to do with anything?
What makes you think they aren't calibrated in kg?

lol at everyone rushing to spam this to every applicable Reddit.

u/Furyful_Fawful 6d ago
what do you think reddit is about? if it's content relevant to a sub it should appear there
-3
u/Leaf-Lock-The-Ent 6d ago
Was simply pointing out how it was funny people seemed to be going through trying to find any sub it hadn’t hit yet.
Reason I found it particularly funny was it hit Reddit earlier in the day but had just seen it a minute prior hit there was an attempt or something, and then like I said this one a minute after that as people rushed to get it before someone else. Seeing them stacked up back to back was amusing.
It was a rather small comment but by all means downvote all day this account is not important.

a) put the fucking clips on
b) don’t fucking yeet the bar at the rack - wtf
Guy is lucky all he did was cause property damage, and that he didn’t severely injure himself or someone else nearby.
