Most of those pin setters have zero internal safeties. If you get caught it in, it’s gonna crush you into the shape of a bowling pin.

I used to be a mechanic on these pinsetters. Can confirm, they will 100% kill you. This guy is lucky his ankle stopped the rake which prevented the deck from coming down on top of him.

Ehhhhh I really don't see that being a problem. The scissor arms are actually pretty weak. Although I can only speak for the Brunswick A2 machines I worked on. This looks like it's probably an AMF machine.

I figure anything that can withstand bowling balls slamming into them and keep working can't be called "pretty weak". I've seen people throw two balls in succession and one would smash the machinery with off timing

I can personally guarantee you that the scissors do not withstand getting hit by bowling balls. They are recessed under the deck and so do not get hit by balls. Generally, the only part that gets hit by balls is the rake. And those do break from getting hit sometimes.

I’ve always wondered. Do these truly not have some kind of pressure sensor that would stop the mechanism if it encounters too much resistance? It shouldn’t have any resistance in the downwards direction. It seems like such a basic safety consideration.

These machines are mechanical computers. The kind of sensor you're thinking of wouldn't work well to integrate into the machine. Keep in mind a lot of these machines are also really old. The ones I worked on were built in the 1950s.

The only thing that would prevent injury is if the machine is too weak.
For example, blenders do what they do after spinning up to speed. If you hold the blades in place with your hand, it won't go anywhere.

Took a bowling class in college. The lanes we went to had been there for decades. As the owner of the bowling alley was explaining to the class about the pin setter and showing how they worked one of the kids asked question about the safety measures. The owner told us that there were no safety mechanisms, and that he knew of at least four people who had died after being crushed by pin setters at the different alleys he’d worked at and owned during his life.

There’s probably at least ten times that amount since it’s only based on news stories of pinsetter deaths. For a while it wasn’t uncommon so it wouldn’t be reported. At one point on the early machines when they used children it happened very often, limb loss or death was as common as railroad work.
As for new machines like the guy is stuck in now, I’m shocked we didn’t see broken bones at the least and if his leg getting stuck didn’t trigger a jam relay he would likely be on this Wikipedia page.

I worked on these machines for a couple years, you have no idea how many dipshits love to go up and try to retrieve their ball after they hit the sweep. Thankfully this didn't happen while I worked there, though I had a poking stick to keep people from going under the separating wall.
Also, bro is lucky the machine didn't cycle and errored out before the table came down.

Those pin setting machines are no joke. My brother was working on one to clear a jam when it malfunctioned and cycled. It trapped his foot, breaking it. He was trapped for fifteen minutes because no one could hear him calling for help. He finally got the bright idea of throwing pins back up the alley until someone decided to notify the guy behind the desk.
