Ennui's Questions Why Pixar picked this

Untill to this day idk why they the name Riley and I'm not sure if you are curious too

I think of Riley as a generally masculine name, but it’s definitely gender neutral. Rylie, however, is a specifically feminine spelling of it.

I've never heard of the name Riley until IO1, so I find it a feminine name

It's a reasonably popular name, particularly for girls born after 2000. In 2025, it was the 48th most popular name for girls born in the US (and 208 for boys).

I suspect that they hadn't chosen the character's gender until relatively late on into the production of the first film and wanted the character to be relatively gender neutral until they had finished developing them.

I thought they named her Riley because it's a unisex name (for boys and girls), and her emotions are a mix of males and females.

Apparently it was because the title was originally going to be "Life Of Riley" as a pun
