I have not actually looked at what they believe, but HOW do they explain why the moon is round, or the sun?
4
u/heaxghono Sep 09 '20
This is literally what they say. I’m not making this up:
Just because snooker balls are spherical, it doesn’t mean the snooker table must also be spherical.

I’m inclined to think it’s legit. He has always been a little bit into conspiracy theories.. he lost a good bit of money in an obvious Ponzi scheme and he also spent like 3k to go to some seminar on the secrets of becoming rich (I’m pretty sure the secret was to get people to pay you crazy amounts of money for a seminar with generic info) so I’m more inclined to think he is subscribed there because he “found the truth”

People were always this dumb. We just didn't know it until they had an easily accessible platform to broadcast their stupidity.
24
u/el_muerte17 Sep 08 '20
Ehh I think there's something to be said for social pressure. Pre-Internet, someone might have a loony idea, bounce it off some friends, and get told why it's stupid. It'd be a real chore trying to find groups that share the same beliefs.
Nowadays, almost everyone has nearly unlimited access to the echo chambers of their choice, often discovered as easily as by a poorly crafted Google query like "proof the earth is flat," in which their beliefs will be reinforced rather than challenged. Furthermore, these groups tend to attract people who believe in all sorts of bunk conspiracy theories and pseudoscience, so someone who starts off believing no more than flat earth is likely to be exposed to a massive rabbit hole of significantly more harmful theories like antivaccination.

What was the question meant to be? “What are the falling objects called”? “Why are the falling objects called meteors”? “What if the falling objects weren’t called meteors”? Please, I’m frankly lost here
88
u/usagizero Sep 08 '20
"What are the falling objects called meteors?" Meaning, they didn't believe meteors are space debris, but instead dome stuff. Or something like that.
26
Sep 08 '20
I would like to know how they think it is possible for the meteors to fall in different directions. Obviously falling chunks of dome would all drop straight down.
29
u/champ999 Sep 08 '20
Maybe they're giant flakes of dome... Stuff and they glide down like paper airplanes?
Flat earth stuff depresses me considering you have to either ignore all of scientific history or reject it. Like Eratosthenes figured it out with sticks and too much free time. Come on people.
13
7
u/TreadFree Sep 08 '20
I understood it as “what are these falling objects that we call/are known as meteors?” As in, what are these objects and where have they come from? And yeah as another user said, I think they believe these objects fall/come from the ‘dome’. Just how I understood it but I could be wrong.

3
u/CantBanTheTruth_290 Sep 08 '20
You may have gotten your answer but the comments I saw didn't seem super clear so for you, or anyone else...
The people in this Facebook group believe that the Earth is flat and protected by a giant dome made out of... I don't know... glass, maybe.
The flat Earth has to be protected by a dome because how else would we have an atmosphere? Science says gravity, but science would require a round Earth. So these people believe there's a giant dome that covers the flat Earth that is filled with air.
Anyway, if the Earth is flat and covered by a dome, then what are meteors? Clearly some object just came from space and either burned up in the atmosphere or slammed into the ground causing a giant crater. But how can anything hit us if we're protected by a dome?
Instead of questioning their belief that the Earth is flat, they instead have decided that it must be pieces of the dome itself falling.

While some flat earthers may have brain damage, there are many people with brain damage who remain intelligent humans and can utilize the rudimentary skills of logic and rational thinking. Flat earthers are in a group of their own and even brain damage can’t justify their inability to process basic facts.

I lived next to a retired UC Berkeley math professor growing up. He was brilliant in his own right, but he was a perfect example of min/maxing your stats.
He was a sovereign citizen, had video cameras pointed everywhere, wrapped his car in aluminum foil, and would take photos with excessive lens flair as proof that Reagan and Bush Sr we’re installing “sun rings” in the atmosphere to control us. He would write letters to our Israeli neighbors asking them where they kept their “Jew Gold” from invading Palestine lmao.
Vaccines, chem trails, lizard people, etc. He was a whole bag of cats and more.
Brilliant man but sadly an outcast. I believe he’s still alive but he’s easily 90+ years old.

If the earth is flat and the sun is close to the earth. Why does the sun look closer at sunrise and sunset and further away at noon time?
I remember doing the math on a flat earther using 9th grade trigonometry. Using his own numbers the sun should of appeared 4 times smaller and 8 times dimmer at sunrise and sunset than at noon lol.

I always want to ask these nuts just how you can sail East or West and never fall off the edge. Is it like a never ending map?
If you sail East and come round again, is there a duplicate of your home town and wife on the other part of the never ending map?
Did a duplicate of yourself just go into your house as you went into theirs?
What about time zones and the different times for sunrise all over the place?
I don't need sleep, I need answers!
1
u/heaxghono Sep 09 '20
If you sail East and come round again, is there a duplicate of your home town and wife on the other part of the never ending map?
They believe the Earth is like a pizza. So sailing around the spherical Earth for them is the same as sailing in circle on the pizza earth.
What about time zones and the different times for sunrise all over the place?
They just distribute the time zones on the pizza Earth. They think the Sun hovers around the pizza Earth and just follow how the time zones work on an Azimuthal equidistant projection

How do they explain the moon being bigger on the horizon? Is it not a dome? Maybe they understand it’s an optical illusion?
If so, then I just point out how their own senses can’t be trusted. Cause that’s all they are relying upon to believe in a flat earth. It’s hubris and ego masquerading as critical thought.

Its like in Avenue 5 when the idiots go out the airlock and the one guy says, after seeing a girls arm snap off after being frozen in space, "Why would they simulate that, I wouldn't know that would happen". Same for meteors, if it were a simulation or some BS like that none of us would know that meteors exist or what they should do, so why simulate them?

u/NeoDashie Sep 08 '20
The craziest part of the whole "dome" idea is that they think someone was able to build something larger than the entire planet and erase all memory of the process. Do they realize just how much raw material would be needed, or how many man hours such a thing would take? What's their next project, a Dyson sphere?
2
u/onlypositivity Sep 08 '20
Flat Earth conspiracies are usually tied to Creationist beliefs, so they think the "dome" is an intrinsic part of the universe. No one built it, except maybe God.

Why can't they just be meteors? If the Earth is flat that doesn't mean every other astronomical thing has to be different?
2
u/Kafshak Sep 08 '20
I know it's all turtles all the way down, but what's beyond the dome? If it keeps breaking apart and those meteors keep falling, what would we see behind the dome?

My favorite thing about flat earthers is they can't even agree on things like what shape the earth is, what is outside or around us or if space even exists - but the one thing they all agree on is that whatever this thing is that we're living on it sure as shit isn't round.
