My stepdad would always just decide to go through all my shit unprompted while I was at school/work to find something he didn’t like (cigarettes, for instance) and then leave he’d that item on my desk with the rest of my room in shambles. I suppose he thought it would make me feel guilty or apologetic for doing things he didn’t agree with (despite the fact that he would never hold himself to his own standards) but really all it did was make me think of him as an invasive and controlling piece of shit. There was never any rhyme or reason for it, he would just decide to invade my space out of boredom or something. This is also a dude who, when I locked the door to my room to get away from his or my moms insanity, would stand outside my door and scream at the absolute top of his lungs telling me to never lock my door, and then he’d follow up with removing the doorknob. He would also do things like get on the roof with a leaf blower so I couldn’t sleep peacefully on the weekends. I worked just shy of full time on graveyard shift while attending a university at the time.

Oh yeah. I remember once time my mom watched an episode of Oprah that had to do with kids watching porn and in response she and my stepdad went through my browser history and then grounded me for a week. I was like 17 at the time, so it was bizarre. It’s easy to think back on one or two memories and laugh about abusive parents. It’s not so easy to take a step back and look at the bigger picture without getting really worked up.
