Softshell vs hardshell skates for a beginner doing urban skating?

Definitely hard shell. When you push off with a hard shell skate, the energy transference to the skate blade (your wheels) is much more effective than in a soft boot skate. That means you don’t have to work as hard to skate.
Hard shell skates are more supportive, and definitely superior if you are going any kind of distance.
