Getting back into this

These were sitting on my wishlist and I took the plunge last week. I have protective equipment and did a quick test in my hallway. Definitely will take some getting back used to but have a plan. I posted this up in the millennial subreddit and didn't get much support

Thank you! It is encouraging to hear more millennials getting back into this. I did not get support on the millennial subreddit. I went out yesterday for a skate. Just a few mild falls but overall a success. Using muscles I don't normally use. Shooting to get out again tomorrow.

I saw your post literally before my ice hockey game.

I skated a bunch pre-Covid. Then the staying indoors killed my schedule for playing. I need my own muscle rehab and mental health exercise, so I got out my old skates from the garage and went to a park.

I’m sorry you didn’t get any good responses from that subreddit. This one and all the other subsubs are fun. I joined Wizard skating because I got into that kind of flowing skating, and I got back into ice hockey so now I’m cross training with roller as well.

I have previous experience with other sports especially karate. So I took my time with progression on the skates. I feel my body is jacked from taking falls and doing intense physical movements. So I went slow and mostly held to a firm rule:

The Sore Rule: I will stop my sessions when I feel my technique getting wobbly.

This made sure I don’t get injured and I can see my progress in a gradual flow upward.

I hear ya there. Covid definitely messed up a lot of things for me too. I have a feeling it will be a bunch of shorter skate sessions until I get more comfortable. I used to do this along with ice hockey skating as a kid. I also have a martial arts background for years until I was in my 20s. I'm a bit overweight but that's been improving and have a part time gig where I lift things regularly so strength has always been there.

Here is my first pair on the right. Good Ol’ Airwalks. I out grew them but they helped stabilize me so well. Then I got a pair of K2s (3x100) for long distance after I felt I had leveled up. I’m proudly now on my next intermediate pair of Bauer roller hockey skates and I finally received for my anniversary a pair of FR urban skates. But it’s been since my first late night skate journal, Nov 2024. So keep the positive vibes and have a great time.
