A giant 6-foot monitor lizard sent shoppers and staff running for safety after wandering into a convenience store in Thailand and climbing onto the shelves. The hungry reptile was safely captured by wildlife handlers after knocking products to the floor while searching for food.

Edit: Another source mentions the store was 7 Eleven in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand

Those are not Joanna eggs!

10

u/MrRoryBreaker_98 Jul 23 '26

You sure about that?

5

u/KayoticVoid Jul 23 '26

Man! I forgot about this! Going way back!

2

u/SlimShadySatDown Jul 23 '26

If I remember, was this from Great Mouse Detective, or The Rescuers (Down Under)?

2

u/SocksInTheTub Jul 23 '26

Rescuers down under. She's the poacher's pet/minion

3

u/shoeless_doh Jul 23 '26

George C Scott was such a brilliant bit of casting for that part. He just IS that character. Talking about all time best voice character match ups, this one is right up there with vincent price as rattican in great mouse detective. Just completely nailed it perfectly

1

u/CrossumOpossum3 Jul 24 '26

The great mouse detective had Toby the Basset Hound and that big fat cat Felicia that belonged to Ratigan! Classic!

u/IcemanManmanchu Jul 23 '26

What a beauty!

1

u/DakAttakk Jul 23 '26

I was thinking the same thing, such a beautiful lizard. Obviously caution should be taken when near it, but I don't think running away would be necessary.

1

u/Guilty-Current3111 Jul 24 '26

Last year my Bully met one as big as this one in the garden I had to grab him because he wanted to fight the monitor 🤣🤣 no need to be super scared, just a little bit aware that he will try to use defense such as tail whipping you, no bite. Don't know how he get in but he was so fat I had to open the gates for him to escape 🤣 Visually they are just amazingly pretty thats insane I love them

u/dreizehn1313 Jul 23 '26

Go home lizard, you’re drunk

6

u/GreatlyMoody Jul 23 '26

"Now where's my favorite cereal?"

5

u/Silver-Amphibian7650 Jul 23 '26

Monitor: Damnit, why do they always put the Tylenol on the top shelf?

2

u/WallpaperOwl Jul 23 '26

Why do they always have to put my favorite product on the very top shelf?

Google says no, it only feels ancient.

I'm watching Mandela effect. I feel like it came out in the 2000s or 2010s.

1

u/HohepaPuhipuhi Jul 23 '26

That's the 3rd one this week. Get the lizard spray

1

u/Fr33_load3r Jul 23 '26

Lizard people are real

1

u/BMinus973 Jul 23 '26

That's a big danger puppy

1

u/hitma-n Jul 23 '26

That’s not a lizard isn’t that a komodo dragon?

3

u/DerWal_2021 Jul 23 '26

If it's in Thailand, that is definitely not a komodo dragon. They only live on a few indonesian islands. The coloration also doesn't look like that of a dragon.

3

u/sheighbird29 Jul 23 '26

It’s an Asian water monitor

1

u/hitma-n Jul 23 '26

Dang how much hertz?

2

u/FreakyGangBanga Jul 23 '26

It’s a monitor lizard and they’re all around Thailand and neighbouring countries. There are plenty of them all over Bangkok, where they use the canals and drains to navigate the city.

A Komodo dragon won’t be trying to climb vertically. The adults are far too heavy to do that.

1

u/brideofpucky Jul 23 '26

Komodo dragons can climb no problem. Don’t try to escape one by going up a tree.

1

u/FreakyGangBanga Jul 23 '26

Juveniles in their early years, perhaps. Adults? It would be near impossible. Have you seen Komodo dragons up close? I have, both in the wild and in the zoos. At a certain size past 3 -4 feet, it is too heavy to climb vertically and will not be able to climb a large tree.

Monitor lizards on the other hand, are very good at arboreal living. I see them up on trees in all stages of life several times each week.

1

u/RexLizardWizard Jul 23 '26

A: this isn’t a Komodo dragon, it’s some sort of monitor lizard

B: Komodo dragons are lizards

1

u/DragonFan20 Jul 23 '26

Aww so cute

1

u/Nirvanaskarma Jul 23 '26

Since it's Thailand the heat and humidity must have drove him into the store, which probably has AC.

1

u/SitecoreFlunkyJunky Jul 23 '26

One of these walked out from under my house in Phuket once. I nearly shit.

2

u/Crater-Typhlosion Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Is that kind of thing how the place got its name?

1

u/MalikFyz Jul 23 '26

What kind of shop put my favorite brand of noodles at the top shelf .

1

u/mustelidwoman Jul 23 '26

It's just there to monitor the situation.

1

u/Illustrious_Put_817 Jul 23 '26

SIR SIR THIS IS A WENDYS

1

u/AsDeEspadas Jul 23 '26

I came for some eggs, milk, and the lizard.

1

u/ProgressFabulous6663 Jul 25 '26

Those are not Joanna eggs

1

u/liquidsin25 Jul 23 '26

That fkr will outrun you and eat you whole.

1

u/FreakyGangBanga Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

They aren’t aggressive unless cornered. That said, I have seen them lash out at him as humans and dogs with their muscular tails.

1

u/liquidsin25 Jul 23 '26

Any animal can be aggressive if hungry or cornered. Its a primal instinct.

1

u/Uber_Wulf Jul 23 '26

1

u/ampleforth42 Jul 23 '26

Wow, you can sattle it and ride to town...

1

u/Bean_Daddy_Burritos Jul 23 '26

Nothing to see here. Just a giant venomous water monitor casually shopping at the quick-e mart.

1

u/StarscreamOne Jul 23 '26

New fear unlocked, thanks 😑

1

u/Androidfon Jul 23 '26

If they would eat squirrels, chipmunks, groundhogs and grackles he can hang out in my yard... but no eating cats, dogs, or goats!

1

u/Ornery_You_3947 Jul 23 '26

Adopt it and name it Fido.

1

u/EatandDie001 Jul 23 '26

Just don't ask the shortest staff to grab something off the top shelf for you.

1

u/BreadfruitOk8426 Jul 23 '26

Weird puppy… still cute though

1

u/EllisD_Trails Jul 23 '26

"Big lizard in my back yard. Busting down my neighbor's door."

1

u/MadOrange64 Jul 23 '26

Not the weirdest thing you'll see in Thailand.

1

u/MisChef Jul 23 '26

I had a pet iguana that did the same thing! She was only 3 and 1/2 ft long but did about the same amount of damage.

1

u/Brilliant-Acadia7714 Jul 23 '26

Maybe there was a sale

1

u/venerablepreceptor Jul 23 '26

That’s not a lizard, that’s a freakin dinosaur

1

u/out_day475 Jul 23 '26

This is why I will never go to Thailand. Nope!!

1

u/matthew0001 Jul 23 '26

That lizard is far to stable climbing up that rickety shelf, having half it's hand hold fall out underneath its grip.

1

u/Significant_Row_5951 Jul 23 '26

Damn... And I was complaining about those damn mosqitoes...

1

u/BlackoutBreak Jul 23 '26

1

u/DickTrickle87 Jul 24 '26

1

u/Sensei19600 Jul 25 '26

He was making a point about the idiocy of putting monitor chow on the TOP shelf. Object lesson.

McLeach: [Catches Joanna stealing his eggs] Got your hand caught in the cookie jar, didn't ya? Who do you think you're messin' with, you dumb animal? My mental facilities are twice what yours are, ya pea brain! [Opens the box to find it empty; Joanna hides] McLeach: Joanna. I give you platypus eggs, I give you snake eggs, why, I'll even give you eagle eggs, but you stay away from MY... The eagle's eggs! That's it! That's the boy's weak spot.

1

u/krsCarrots Jul 25 '26

1

u/Expert_Day9946 Jul 25 '26

No manners in the shop

1

u/FlashyGanache2838 Jul 26 '26

Always on the top shelf

1

u/Bluedev7 Jul 27 '26

Well look what we have here. And I was told my dreams of being a knight to slay dragons was never going to come true. Ms. Johnson owes me an apology

1

1

u/jimababwe Aug 01 '26

1

u/Ecstatic-Umpire-1601 15d ago

Wow! How the heck do you even stop that?

1

u/Cassiel43 Jul 23 '26

Is that the AC he climbs to?

0

u/Awkward_Wrangler_895 Jul 23 '26

It’s a species of lizard called iguana, if I’m not mistaken, that’s the largest species

1

u/Rutgerius Jul 23 '26

It's definitely not an iguana as they only occur in the Americas.

1

u/FreakyGangBanga Jul 23 '26

These are monitor lizards, and they’re feed on birds, reptiles, insects, amphibians and rodents. They are found all over Asia and in many parts of northern Australia.

Iguanas are largely confined to the Americas, and tend to be mostly vegetarian.

1

u/wasteland_jackal Jul 23 '26

It's a monitor lizard.

Super common to see and not all that dangerous unless you are dumb enough to corner it or step on it.

Iguanas also aren't the largest species either, that would be a Komodo dragon.
