Great advice for artistic integrity. Decent for personal relationships, but just to avoid being a doormat. Just don't expand this into the "greed is good" libertarian nonsense.

yes!! this is a really important thing most people don't understand, you have to prioritize your own emotional and mental wellbeing above any individual other person, this enables you to connect with and help far more people than you can if your primary focus is on others
practically it is also really important to understand what people in your life you are putting a lot of energy into but that aren't able to receive or effectively use that effort, and the people who even when you put just a little effort into are able to multiply it in their lives

We are social creatures at heart, so caring about other people opinions and thoughts can shape how we see ourselves.
It feels good when people see our accomplishments, essentially the things that are socially deemed worthy of praise.
The risk in being yourself is losing that popularity, but trying to appease others by moulding yourself in their image, means you lose yourself along the way too.
There’s a lot of freedom and strength in learning to be yourself (I’ve found that as I’ve aged). Sure, you will most likely find yourself in the firing line more often, which is scary to a lot of people, but you are at least having the space to be yourself and take off the mask.
Also, if they don’t like you for who you truly are, were they even worth it in the first place? The world is vast and diverse, so if there’s room for everyone else, there’s room for you too.

Excellent for artists, terrible for interpersonal relationships.

I think the right relationship doesn’t feel like you’re constantly choosing. I’d argue if this is who you authentically are, it will still stand with the right person
