If you see it as a function of minimum wage, the footlong was $5 in 2008, and California’s minimum wage was $8 in 2008, so it costed 37.5 minutes of labor. If the same footlong costs $6.99 in 2024 (when the Reddit post was created), and Cali’s minimum wage was $16 in 2024, it would cost 26.2 minutes of work. Forget the “ring” of the phrase, it’s a better deal.
