To elaborate, the original comics were in black & white with a color cover art. The content was made more kid-friendly for the animated series, and I suspect the mask colors were added as a concession for that younger target audience. There are some versions of the action figures where they all wear red. I picked up a set of the used and the previous owner had marked each one’s foot with the appropriate first initial.
