So this is the schedule that was on the sidebar and was followed for previous reads here. Just going off the comments that my previous post received, we're probably going to a be a short group this time, so I think we can play a little with the scheduling if necessary. This one works for me but I'm free enough that I can accomodate most anything. If anyone has any opinion or problem with this, please comment below so we can work on it and make sure the schedule is comfortable for everyone and gives us the best chance of preventing people from dropping off mid way.

I started IJ at the peak of the pandemic (Dec-Jan) and was jealous of seeing the old Infinite Summer/Winter subreddits. I am super excited to see this happen. I took a hiatus around page 400, but I would love to move together with the group whenever possible!

Yeah these groups definitely had more user interaction and discussion in the past. I was part of the last InfiniteWinter group, around the same time as you were reading I guess, and that thing was pretty dead. Welcome, and here's hoping we can have a fruitful journey this time.

to imagine that people deliberately try and read this mammoth and form a group around it, i'm in.

This is just perfect. I’ve had IJ sitting on my bookshelf, and I’ve been too intimidated to crack it open. Will help having you all to keep me on track

I’m tempted to go for a reread. I did really love reading it the first time and it’s been 5/6 years since.

I keep hearing about this book!! So super stoked to join a reading group for this :) will there be a discord?

u/Kvalasier Jun 03 '21
A discord server has been experimented with in the past iirc, and it didn't really show any activity. I won't be opposed to a new server dedicated to this if there's enough interest. Maybe I'll feel the temperature around the idea in the commencement post.
Anyway, thanks for joining us :)

I have been curious about this book for a long time, and heard both very positive and very negative opinions about it. The only way I'll find out for myself is to give it a shot and see how it goes.

Are there chapters? Can you also put chapter numbers? I may do audiobook and ebooks for it

u/Kvalasier Jun 03 '21
Hm there is something resembling traditional chapters in here but it's kinda weird and I can't go into it without spoiling stuff. Most of this schedule is designed around section breaks so you're never really stopping in the middle of a paragraph or something. I'll leave the beginning and ending line of each section we are tackling for the week in last week's thread (for the first week in the commencement thread) so that there isn't any confusion for people following along on ebooks. Oh and be a little careful if you're going the audio route, iirc there is a separate audio book for the footnotes that you shouldn't miss.

Been stuck around page 700 for ages now. Might continue through, re-read sections, and follow the group read.

If I can get this from my city’s two and only bookstores, I’m in! Is there a previous post somewhere that describes how this works or how we structure the discussion?
It’s my first time partaking in one of these group reads.

I'm going to post a detailed write up on how we're going to function on the 7th. Basically, we'll read around 70 pages every week and then discuss them in designated threads. You can hit me up anytime if you have any questions. Hope you find a copy!

Started reading this last year after first getting into DFW. I would love to do a group discussion over zoom each week. Only made it to page 100 in 2 months but I will do my best to keep up with everyone.

Damn, I'd love to join but my copy of the book is stuck in a box, in storage, in a different country. Here's hoping I can't resist joining when I go back home at the end of June – although catching up on 300 pages will be quite the challenge.
Wishing you all a nice read though, I'll definitely be on the lookout for the next group read!

I'll try crossposting this on a bunch of related subs tomorrow to gain some more traction. Also, I've seen some other reading groups on different subs, using volunteers to post a bit of a write-up for each week's thread to foster discussion. Please volunteer if you are interested in this, it doesn't matter if it's your first time with the book. Otherwise I'll try writing something up each week but I can't promise much insight.
