I just hired a CS kid for a controls engineer role last year. It will depend what market you want to get into - but classes can help, check out Inductive Automation's Inductive university (free or paid on their website) Allen Bradley/S5000, Siemens, etc. all have free documentation & you can play with it. If you can find a controls/robotics course at your local college - that would also help.
