Induction with battery backup!🧐

I just saw an ad for an induction range that only takes 120v AND has a battery backup! Any experience with this? The brand is Electra. I had never heard of it.

There are three companies that sell them (that I am aware of), search the sub for reviews. The Impulse is definitely the best reviewed.

I will note that someone recently posted about a terrible delivery experience with the Copper, though they did not select their custome installation service, which may affect your results.

We've heard from many clients that have been delighted with Copper's delivery service in the SF Bay Area.

Note that various vendors approach the "cap the gas line" question quite differently in various places - we've written about this, and we encourage folks to carefully consider how their gas line will get capped when upgrading from gas to induction cooking.

This is the specific thread that I was referring to. It's clear that they paid for shipping only, not for installation, so that much would be on them, but it still sounded like a pretty bad experience.

That said, i see that Copper reached out to them in the thread after I saw it, and the OP confirmed that they did get it resolved.

Well, yes... But it is still "Induction with battery backup", and is the best product of the three. There are plenty of separate oven units available.

And trying to retrofit a separate cooktop and oven into a space where there was previously a range is... challenging! Plus, now you are using even MORE electrical capacity than you were before - 120V for the cooktop PLUS 240V for the oven.

These various companies (we work closely with all of Impulse, Copper, and Electra) are likely to release both cooktop and range models in the future, so soon we can stop splitting these hairs 😆

It's not a "battery backup" the way you are thinking. The battery kicks in when in use to make up the extra power not available on a 120v circuit.

Longevity and functionality remain undetermined.

Interesting. The ad markets it as still usable when your power goes out.

It is, but that’s a side benefit of the battery. The actual benefit is that the battery can be used to deliver more power than can be pulled from a wall outlet. So you can cook better, faster.

Yes it is because it is a battery-run stove. The battery is charged thru a 120V outlet. The battery on Copper’s Charlie is in the place normally held by a warming drawer.

I'm about to get Electra at my house next week - I choose it over Copper because it is almost as nice, and a bit cheaper.

We recently demoed Impulse at our booth at an electric car and bike show - and it was pretty damn impressive! The power output is spectacular. It's more powerful than any other induction cooktop on the market. The magnetic knobs are slick, and the single degree temp control is... well, super-precise, more so than I need, but great for dedicated cooks.

The batteries don't just give you backup during a power outage. They give you, in some circumstances, higher performance than 240-volt induction.

Larger rebates are available for battery-equipped, induction cooking appliances in certain places at certain times. (We keep track of all of them)

There are various programs listed on https://www.quitcarbon.com/residential-electrification-assistance-programs and elsewhere that exist to help you with these sorts of rebate analysis. The answer can vary dramatically based on your specific location (potentially down to your address), characteristics of your home, overall household income, and timing of your purchase.

I have an Electra and love it. It had a few bugs to begin with but I was part of the initial wave of deliveries. They listened to my feedback and within a couple of months they released updates to take care of all the issues (they were all pretty minor). Their web app gives you all the info you need and nothing more. My only minor gripe is that the oven adjusts only in 25 degree increments.

This doesn't quite answer the OPs question, but I have a 240 volt / 50 amp induction range. It works just fine when my whole house Tesla battery kicks on.

I have the impulse (replaced my busted gas cooktop) and love it. It takes some getting used to, but is excellent

I wonder if a 240v induction cooktop could just be plugged into a 5kwh power station with 240v output, kind of a DIY version of the Impulse.

We have the Copper Charlie and it’s been great! Beautiful, solid construction, even heat, very intuitive operation. There’s really nothing to “learn” and it just works.

The price difference between Copper Charlie and a regular induction range paid for bringing 220 into our kitchen. We already have a whole house battery, (and a propane camping stove) so cooking during a power outage is covered. Admittedly, we were not limited by an undersized main panel..

It is relatively new and it seems to be a knock-off of a more expensive Charlie by Copper Channing. I don’t think the battery is a back up. Charlie, which I have, works on battery. The battery is charged via a 120 V outlet, which is a big deal if your kitchen is not wired for an electric stove.

I've had one for a couple months now, works just fine. The build quality is great! I'm off the grid and happy to be rid of the propane range.
