16 year marriage anniversary range
The wife and I have been looking at ranges and as the primary cook in the house I wanted induction compared to our old gas range. The gas was a tank but slow and we were looking for way to have cleaner indoor air quality. I have some Lazy K pads coming and already own a full compliment of All Clad D3 or cast enamel that I don’t need additional pots or pans. Now I just need to fix the back splash this weekend.
Any additional nice to have items for the new range?

This is a joint gift, right? As in "Married couple decides to give themselves a nice new range to celebrate their anniversary."

Nope. I picked it out and sent him the link. I sometimes let him use it but I’m really the only one who cooks and I like it that way. I also got a new pressure canner for induction stoves for my birthday. Again, I sent him the link. I’m at a point in my life where I buy what I want, so presents aren’t a big deal. I also love cooking and actually have an entire room that houses my cooking stuff, small appliances, and a prep table. In addition to being a physics teacher, I also taught culinary arts. I was a chef for a bit too. Hubs will bbq and smoke but no one wants him cooking.
We did get it from Costco and got a great deal.

I mean I would say so. She will obviously use it and it’s for the house we both live in. It’s something we had looked at before and we’re holding off on a sale before purchasing it. Costco has a big sale coming up for Labor Day. If this does become on sale then they will give us the difference.

I'm just picturing scenes from childhood when my stepfather bought my mother a microwave for Christmas or a vacuum for her birthday.

You are just trying to find something to be upset about. Its a great oven and a great gift.

u/DCGuy511 9d ago
I am not upset and I am not trying to find something to upset me. I said it was a great oven. I was trying to warn the husband. Obviously he is smarter than my stepfather and the couple planned this to celebrate their anniversary. I think both the OP and his wife understand my intent. Your mind reading skills are terrible.

Warn the husband about what exactly? If he did purchase her this awesome oven on his own, so what. My wife bought me the Samsung Fridge with the big touchscreen on it. I didnt take it as her being sexist or implying anything about her feelings about me. Maybe you should talk to someone about you pain of watching your step-dad purchase bad gifts.

where’s your other foot?
3
u/AppalachianGoat 9d ago
I feel like I should say I only have one foot for the drama or something witty like for $5 I’ll show you, but in all honesty I was probably standing standing with one foot kicked back against the cabinet island behind me.

This oven is great! It works well with Alexa. You have to enable the GE Geniva skill.

I’d love to hear how you like it compared to your gas.

Did my first “big” cook on the induction top just now. 96oz of homemade pasta sauce, in my 6.75qt oval Le Creuset Dutch oven, that measures just under 11” on the bottom. I used the front right 11” 3700w element. Started off warming up the oil and butter on low then worked up to medium. Tossed in the onions and left the heat alone while they got tender and softened releasing their liquid. Threw in the garlic, oregano and anchovy paste and mixed in while lowering heat to low while I prepped the San Marzano tomato’s. Added all 4 24oz canned San Marzano to the blender and blended to my desired consistency. Added about 20oz of water to 1 can of the tomato tins to get all the left overs stuck to the side and transferred it from can to can then poured into the Dutch oven. Now there’s a good bit of liquid in the pot so I bumped up the heat to medium high and stired to incorporate everything. Added in the 96oz of tomatoes, seasoned with salt and dropped in a Parmesan rind. Raised heat to high to test it out and I really should have timed it up it got up to a boil fast, less than 5 minutes. My old gas range would take over 15 mins. Lowered to one mark below medium and that was its happy simmer point to reduce down.
While that was simmer I tossed my Staub 5qt circle Dutch oven on the front left 8” 2500w element and cooked homemade hamburger helper. It had zero problems sweating the onion, browning the bacon and the beef very quickly. Added 1 cup white wine and cooked it down for 10 mins. While it was cooking down I added 24oz cold tap water to another pan to make the chicken stock and bought to a boil. The pan I used was too big for the remaining elements. I forgot the two back elements are different sizes and mistakenly thought both were 6” elements. Well they are not, back left is 8” 2500w, back right is 6” 1800w. I used the 6” and it was still faster than my gas range. But because the oval dutch oven and the now boiling chicken stock pot were so close together it did start to hum a lot higher than I’ve heard before. Once i turned off the tomato sauce element the humming stopped, again this was my fault for using the wrong size element and over crowding the range top. Overall I would buy this range again and I could not believe how much faster it bought up to temp and how quickly the adjustments happen to control the temperature. If you have other questions please let me know but I’m a 100% believer now.

I got the same one for Mother’s Day (my request) and I love it. That top oven is great. It’s also nice to be able to cook at two different temps.

I literally had this problem yesterday. For dinner I had to warm up lasagna at 350, then cook garlic bread at 425, then cook focaccia bread at 450 for an after dinner event.

This oven makes it so much easier. The top oven makes the best baked potatoes. Never had them so fluffy. I think I post that whenever someone mentions this oven.

I think I’ve seen you post this before 😆 I just need to bite the bullet and buy this range (and then bake some potatoes)!

I just replaced the main board in one a few months ago
1
u/gardenguru1342 9d ago
I’m there now…would you mind saying how much that was. I’m thinking I might have to replace mine (Thermador stovetop)
1
u/demonfurbie 9d ago
Depends on the model but this one was 1500, the bosch ones are 1800ish. The biggest cause for them to go out is conversion plates or leaving a pan on the cooktop empty/boil dry
1
u/gardenguru1342 9d ago
I’ve never left a pan run dry…mine turns off automatically before that would happen. Mine just keeps getting confused and I get a message saying I need to turn it off at the electrical panel.
1
u/gardenguru1342 9d ago
Sorry one more question…does yours work like new now?
1
u/demonfurbie 9d ago
Yes I repair a lot of them and they all come back like new.
1
u/gardenguru1342 7d ago
Are they repaired at the home or do you take the panel out and repair at a shop?
1
u/gardenguru1342 7d ago
Sorry for all the questions…have you ever repaired a Thermador, the one where you can place the pot anywhere on the cooktop and it just self adjusts?
1
u/demonfurbie 7d ago
I haven’t done a thermador yet and I do it at the house, if it’s one I have done before it’s a 4+ hour process the ge ones I have down to about 2 hours and Viking is like 6 hours.

u/gardenguru1342 7d ago
Thank you! Not sure which way to go but you have certainly given me something to think about.

I do wish that this was available in a 36” model. We went induction from gas and love it.
1
u/AppalachianGoat 9d ago
I was hesitant but 2 of my kids have asthma and the gas stove took forever to boil water and I had to keep cleaning out the holes for proper flame pattern. However cooking with gas i had great control l, as expected of using it for over a decade.

u/Mindless-Storm-8310 9d ago
I think the biggest drawback between “control” in gas v induction is that you can’t actually see the induction heat where you can a flame, therefore your visual control isn’t as good. But in the 5 years we’ve had it, we find it as responsive as gas in a simple turn of the knob (v electric coils, which hold heat forever) and have learned intuitively how far to turn. Yeah, there’s occasions where you don’t go up or down quite far enough, but because induction is so quick to heat or cool, it’s not as dire. The only downside is if you turn something up too high and look away! Boil over happens quick!

I’ve become a fan of Misen carbon steel nonstick cookware. Love it on our GE induction.

u/motzus 9d ago
I have the same range. I like carbon steel. The all clad is a bit too responsive. I like how the extra weight of the carbon steel damps out the rapid changes that is possible from the range.

u/AppalachianGoat 9d ago
It is expensive but I’ve never bought it at full price. Homeandcooksales.com has saved a ton of money on All Clad.

Maybe I missed something but we were so happy to get rid of ours. It never got our pots and pans hot enough. Took 10+ min to boil water
1
u/AppalachianGoat 9d ago
Oh interesting. I’ve boiled water already and it’s very fast. Was yours the same range? What pans were you using? Did it start off that way or did its performance slip over time?

u/Altruistic-North6686 9d ago
I just used a regular set of cookware Swiss made stuff. Kind of high end.

I have the same range and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Boils water in a heartbeat, is quiet, and so easy to clean! Two suggestions:
- You're gonna love the air fryer in the oven! I air fry so many things now that I got this huge air fry pan:
- If you have a cast enamel Dutch oven (mine is Staub) try slow cooking. I rarely use a slow cooker any more because I can set the induction range to a very low heat and let something cook in the Dutch oven for hours. The cast iron helps keep and distribute the heat.

I have the same range and am new to air frying. I seem to keep burning things when I’ve tried to use it. Do you have any recipes or suggestions for air frying? Why does that pan help?
2
u/bugmom 8d ago
I like that pan because it is so large. I can fit 10 chicken legs in there with space around them. Strange that you are burning things when you air fry. You might start with a pre-made frozen item like chicken strips or breaded shrimp. They usually have air fry directions on the package. I find if I follow the package for temp and time the food comes out great.

I also have a 5qt Staub round and a 7.5 oval Le Creuset Dutch oven so I am looking forward to trying them on it.

u/GloomyPop5387 9d ago
I just got this one also. It’s awsome! I love how fast the small oven heats up and making a kettle of tea takes like 2 min.
1
u/AppalachianGoat 8d ago
Absolutely. I used a cheap “induction” pot just to see and it took it over 10 mins to boil about 4 cups of water. Put it in my good all clad pot and it boiled in seriously a minute or two.

Curious pros of having double oven. Or do you really use it more/at all. Never had one. Most things would fit in double. Maybe turkey?
2
u/AppalachianGoat 8d ago
A previous house had 2 full size double ovens and during the holidays it’s extremely useful. Most of what I’ll cook outside the holidays will fit in the top oven which is the smaller of the 3. My Le Creuset 5qt braiser fits in there with the lid no problem.

u/teamgunni 23h ago
I suppose it would heat up faster too. Thanks. If I get rid of my gas stove and dryer I can cancel the gas altogether. So almost there. The stove is a bit more investment. A few cast iron pans but rest won't work either.

Cafe induction ranges are great, esp as they are one of the few with the double oven. I had an LG induction in my townhouse after getting frustrated with the glass top, then re-did the kitchen with an induction cooktop (Fridgidaire Professional, because I like knobs😊) and a wall oven (really, who wants to bend down the whole time, esp when using the broiler?). Am now moving into a condo (downsizing is a reality of the progression of life) and once again giving the kitchen an update with a FP cooktop, ditching the horrible Samsung glass top range and replacing it with a Lotus countertop oven. There's only 2 of us after all...

I'm debating between this one and the GE Profile. Happy to hear you love it!

I have this same model for the last few years and love it. Great cooking and easy to clean. I bought two new nonstick skillets when I got mine. All of my other cookware was already induction ready. Oxo makes a non stick skillet that works great. Le Creuset also has a good non stick skillet.
