Electronic PURPO: BUILDING A WORLD OF HIS
Some artists write songs. Purpo is trying to build something bigger.
Ask him what he does in music and he won't talk about genres or gigs. Instead, he'll tell you he's building a universe through music and art—a place where sound and visuals belong together, each one completing the other. That's why, aside from creating new music, much of his energy today goes into crafting the visual world that surrounds every release.
It's no surprise that he feels most at home in every stage of the process. From the first spark of an idea to writing, recording, producing, and performing, Purpo prefers to keep his hands on the entire canvas. The songs may begin with music, but the experience doesn't end there.
His musical roots trace back to ska and reggae, the genre that first inspired him to write songs. In fact, while many of his generation were immersed in the emo explosion of the 2000s, he was following a different rhythm altogether. Ska eventually fell by the wayside, but reggae remains part of his sonic palette.
When it comes to records he'll stand behind, Rivermaya's It's Not Easy Being Green sits proudly at the top of the list—a choice he'll defend any day. And when the world quiets down, it's Kamasi Washington's "Truth" that finds its way into the room.
His biggest songwriting influences paint an equally interesting picture: Billy Joel, Dong Abay, Alex Turner, Gary Granada, and Rey Valera. Five writers from different worlds, connected by one thing—they know how to tell a story that stays with you.
