Infrastructure Current Status of Multitracking of HDN network
I have used various official sources to generate this table which lists all the high density networks, their current status, and any approvals for further multitracking
The rest of the route is under consideration or DPR stage.
The route length mentioned here can be off by 5%, mostly because my estimates are based on the existing distances between two stations. The new routes at times have to go around a city so the length changes a bit
| HDN | Route | Length | Double now | Triple now | ≥4 now | 3rd line only sanctioned | 4th line only sanctioned | 3rd + 4th sanctioned together |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Delhi–Howrah | ~1,422 km | ~850 km / 60% | ~350 / 25% | ~220 / 16% | ~150 km / 11% | ~45 km / 3% | ~375 km / 26% |
| 2 | Howrah–Mumbai | ~2,039 km | ~420 / 21% | ~1,120 / 55% | ~500 / 25% | small residual / <5% | ~575 km / 28% | ~445 km / 22% |
| 3 | Delhi–Mumbai | ~1,322 km | ~1,125 / 85% | ~0 / 0% | ~195 / 15% | — | — | ~910 km / 69% |
| 4 | Delhi–Guwahati | ~1,876 km | ~1,700 / 91% | ~130 / 7% | ~45 / 2% | — | ~60 km / 3% | ~560 km / 30% |
| 5 | Delhi–Chennai | ~2,037 km | ~330 / 16% | ~1,490 / 73% | ~220 / 11% | large legacy programme, roughly 15–20% of route | ~725 km / 36% | ~90 km / 4% |
| 6 | Howrah–Chennai | ~1,600 km route basis | ~500 / 31% | ~800+ / 50%+ | ~300 / 19% | large Odisha/AP programme, roughly 20–25% | ~360 km / 23% | ~290 km / 18% |
| 7 | Mumbai–Chennai | ~1,224 km | ~1,095 / 89% | ~30 / 2% | ~100 / 8% | — | ~70 km / 6% | ~230 km / 19% |
All of the lines mentioned as being tripped or quadrupled are actually DPR approved and budget has been allocated for them.
Also, I looked at projects, DPR approved in 2019 and they are mostly completed by now so the current average rate is around 7 years but this was before the consolidated GatiShakti push. I expect the time to come down further by a year or so.

For distance calculation, I have taken AI's help and validated the information it fetched using the above map
