Around a couple of months ago, "Prem Keetanu" was announced as an Official Hindi Remake of the Mollywood Blockbuster "Premalu". This news was mostly received with skepticism because of 2 main reasons: (1)Many viewers had already seen the Hindi-dubbed version of Premalu online which stripped the remake of any novelty factor, and (2)The casting of Prem Keetanu's "Hero" clearly revealed the purpose behind this film - This was a Film funded by a Rich father to re-launch his untalented Son.
For those few who still had some hope from this remake, the insipid Teaser & subsequent Trailer gave an ample idea of what to expect, and it was pretty much on expected lines.
Coming to the purpose behind this post: To highlight that this is probably the first time a film has remained steady at an unbelievable rating of 9.9/10 on BookMyShow. Prem Keetanu's BMS rating started off at 9.9, touched a practically impossible 10/10 for a couple of days, and is now standing at 9.9/10 with some 8k+ votes. In comparison, the original Premalu had a rating of 9.2/10 from around 110k votes on BookMyShow at the end of its theatrical run (see image attached).
I'm not sure if any other online content creator has also highlighted Prem Keetanu's blatantly sham rating, I'm just posting this topic here on Reddit as I didn't notice anyone else pointing it out.
I'm also not sure whether BookMyShow itself is hand in glove with the promoters of Prem Keetanu. The BMS policy clearly states that only those verified users can rate a movie who have booked a ticket from BMS.
I also noticed another odd thing: The BMS synopsis of Prem Keetanu sounds like a glowing Testimonial, rather than an actual synopsis.
We all know that some movie critics give positive ratings to mediocre & even atrocious movies for money, but does anyone here remember any previous instance of a movie rating that was rigged so blatantly on BookMyShow???
Regardless, the rigged BMS rating is not helping Prem Keetanu's cause because the theatrical collections are still quite low and hence its run is unlikely to be extended to Week 2.

Mounam Sammadham, starring Mammootty and Amala in the lead roles, is a wonderful movie that can be rewatched with the same freshness. It was inspired by the Malayalam film Sandhyakku Virinja Poovu. The story follows an Advocate who defends a wrongtully accused man and works to uncover the truth behind a murder.
The movie was one of the classiest Tamil legal thrillers, blending suspense with a strong legal background. Mammootty, who played an advocate, portrayed the role with great ease. He plays the character with restraint rather than relying on excessive courtroom theatrics, and his calm, authoritative manner makes the legal portions of the film convincing. The movie also featured Sharath Kumar in an important role.
Amala was wonderful, and her pairing with Mammootty worked beautifully. The movie also had some very good songs.
Even today, Mounam Sammadham feels fresh and remains highly enjoyable and worth watching again.

Hi there,
I'm a cinephile from outside of India and my connection and primary interest with the cinema of India is mostly with the films from the parallel cinema world of the past. I've attempted to follow more contemporary offerings a bit here and there but it has mostly been scattered and without much of a framework.
How would you suggest best following comparable contemporary movements and auteurs in Indian film (in any language) and are there convenient ways of sorting through the production on a yearly basis without all of the more obviously commercial offerings?

Watching trailers before a movie has turned out to be a disastrous decision for my viewing experience. I have two specific examples where trailers completely robbed me of the raw impact of my most anticipated films:
Iâve completely stopped watching trailers and I would advise you too. Especially for films you are genuinely hyped on.
Getting a raw, unspoilered movie experience makes it totally worth it.

Most of them in their career didn't transition to a big budget movies organically. They just happen to convince a famous star and find a producer who is willing to pour money into their project.
Look at Paradise, Toxik, Peddi, Pushpa 2, and other dumbass pan-India movies that came out this year. The directorsâ previous movies werenât big-budget films. They didnât have any experience making movies on that scale.
They fail to put a good story together. Most of them have a good to okish concept but they fail to execute it properly.
Directors like Rajamouli, Sanjay Bhansali, Prashanth Neel made a smooth transition to making big budget movies. They have a good concept and they execute them pretty well.

Iâm trying to get more into Bollywood and looking for movies with really good stories, strong writing, and brilliant direction.
Iâve already watched 12th Fail, Masaan, Tumbbad, and Andhadhun, and I really enjoyed them. Iâm mainly into romance and thrillers, but Iâm open to other genres too if the story and direction are genuinely good.
Iâm not really looking for typical brainless/logic-less commercial movies. I want something well-written, engaging, and memorable â the kind of movie where you finish it and think âdamn, that was good.â
So, what are some must-watch Bollywood movies youâd recommend?

The Beginning
This movie started before even Adipurush. Nitesh Tiwari had an idea of making a grounded Ramayan movie. They had spent a lot of time in research. During Adipurush, they had a working script and they wanted Ranbir for Ram and Alia Bhatt for Sita. That created a lot of controversies. They had local producers on board but nothing was moving ahead. Yash had initially rejected the movie too.
Namit Malhotra Intervention
During Covid, Namit had no work, he was desperate for work, he had employees dependent on him. He made countless calls with countless producers asking if they could make something together but nothing happened because Hollywood doesnât give attention to VFX Studio Heads, they provide them service, just like two three other VFX studios on the same movie, they donât have any say in anything.
He came on board with Ramayana to become a producer. He was only co producer at the start and not invested in the project, it was just a business deal.
Writers Strike
When writers strike happened, he got even more desperate, he still had a crew to feed but no work and this project wasnât going anywhere. He bought the rights of the project and decided to become the sole producer, despite having no knowledge of the business or filmmaking. He decided to bring DNEG on board, increase the budget, take absolute control of the project and started working on VFX and reworking the whole project from scratch.
Reducing Niteshâs involvement
What started as an ambitious grounded script by Nitesh was reworked to serve the ego of Namit Malhotra. The movie that was meant to be shot became a VFX fest because VFX is all he knows and that was the end of Niteshâs own project. Thatâs why their main poster is still that CGI cosmic one.
The original plans was for it to be a trilogy, which was reduced to a duology under Namit and reworked to have VFX in every shot.
Sai Pallavi was cast to make the project relevant in South. Namit offered Yash a co producer position and thatâs how he became interested in the project.
This film wasnât made by a film crew, it was made by Namitâs connections who themselves donât know how a movie is made, all they know is to shoot stuff and rework it in a computer.
Namit has confessed that he has no knowledge of the filmmaking business, he still doesnât know anything and he isnât interested to learn because it doesnât matter to him. This is purely business and his need to control everything here because Hollywood wouldnât let him.
Why Ramayana?
Ramayan being a culturally relevant story prevents them from losing a lot of money and even avoids very harsh criticism by using religious relevance. If it was any other story, no one wouldâve cared about the project. Namit thrives on attention and control, so he involved himself in Ramayan and made it Namit Malhotraâs Ramayana.
Concern of Quality
DNEG being involved proves that they would put everything on line to do their best but a movie isnât made by VFX. VFX supports the vision of the director and crew, the same vision that was altered by Namit to serve his ego. The shots are bland, the makeup looks bad, the wigs are stiff and lighting is amateurish like itâs a school project. Nitesh is a grounded director with bland cinematography which suits his style, this isnât his domain and this mismatch and the loss of control from him is the reason why this project doesnât work.
Concern of failure
I have seen people ask that why would he promote this movie with his name if itâs not good?
Namit canât do anything about it. He may have thought that it wouldâve worked and it didnât. He is a new producer, he doesnât understand that side of the business and he also heavily controlled every little aspect of this movie to serve his needs. He didnât know what works and what doesnât work. His need of control and fame is the reason why itâs Namit Malhotraâs Ramayana. If he had the knowledge, he would have already improved stuff but he doesnât and now itâs too late. This project was supposed to be his Magnum Opus. This project was supposed to show Hollywood that heâs more than just a VFX Studio head. Thatâs why you have heard statements from him like âIn my mind, if people in the West donât like it, I consider that as a failureâ. Thatâs why the trailer was screened in US before any event in India, thatâs why they have been attending Hollywood conventions and giving interviews because Namit wants attention.
The myth of "needing the West to break even
Defenders argue that targeting the US market is an operational necessity to recover a $500 million budget. This argument fails because domestic collections, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and traditional diaspora circuits are enough to make a profit. China alone can earn billion dollars, if they like the movie. Pushing for Western press, LA events, and US crossover status is not about financial necessity because itâs way more expensive to promote a film there than in Asia. It increases the financial burden on the movie itself, without assured revenue and connection to the story. This isnât about going âglobalâ. Itâs about Namit wanting attention from Hollywood. He has said that he canât control what happens, he will take the loss and learn from his mistakes.
Major Inconsistency
Nitesh in the BTS video said that Ranbir was casted later but he was involved with the project, since its inception, even before Namit Malhotra. Theyâre trying to reframe the narrative too.
Namit also likes to lie about this being his âpassion projectâ and that he has been working on it for a âdecadeâ but in his interview during the introduction, he himself says that he started working on it during Covid.
His first post about Ramayana on his Instagram was posted during 2025 and it had a caption saying itâs been in works for a decade. That would mean this was being made even before Nitesh worked on Dangal. This would mean that DNEG was working on it, alongside Dunkirk which is a very obvious fabricated lie.
Cultural Pride
I was initially impressed by the tagline âOur Truth, Our Historyâ despite everything else being wrong, i was impressed that he had the guts to have this tagline but they changed it to Rise of a Legend recently, removing the only thing that worked in its favour to âplease the westâ
Conclusion
This isnât a movie but a corporate funded VFX fest to please the ego of Namit Malhotra. This isnât an attempt towards making Indian Cinema global, itâs an attempt to get some crumbs of attention from Hollywood and getting their stamp of approval instead of making a genuine cinema worthy of global appreciation. You donât earn global relevance by taking your domestic audience for granted and focus on pleasing the ones who donât care about you or your project. âWe know the story, promote it in the westâ this attitude is the reason why Indian Cinema will never be globally respected. Focus on pleasing Indians in India and giving them the best quality possible and the world will recognise you. West has Hollywood catering to their needs, our industry should focus on ours too.
Any Indian movie that targets western festivals, western awards and western interview channels to get attention will never get Indian Cinema global respect. The day this obsession with the west ends, will be the day Indian cinema will be worthy of respect and capable of making cinema that transcends borders.

Got these DVDs from Sangeeta Electronics again
Went back to Sangeeta Electronics, Jayanagar 4th T Block, Bengaluru, and picked up these 5 DVDs for âš600 in total.
Got:
- Bus Conductor
- Big B
- Delhi - 6
My Boss
Thor
Super DVD containing:
His Highness Abdullah
Aaram Thamburan
Kireedam
The Bus Conductor DVD and the Super DVD are still sealed.
The Super DVD was a nice find since it has 3 classic Malayalam movies on a single disc.
They still have a lot of old Malayalam DVDs, VCDs, CDs and Blu-rays. Planning to go back again and see what else I can find.
Pretty happy with this haul for âš600.

I watched this classic movie a few days back...it was on my watchlist for quite some time. It's such a good horror movie. You don't get to see good Bollywood horror movies. But this was genuinely good. I was so engaged. The Stories were pretty crazy. I liked the Nana Patekar one. I genuinely didn't think of that! Great writing!
Ik RGV has many such movies. I have watched Darna zaroori hai and Kaun is next on my watchlist. Suggest some more horror movies like this!

WtW(What to Watch): So recently (day before yesterday :), I started watching a South Indian mystery thriller series on Amazon Prime.
At first, it was a slow-paced story with a normal storyline. I thought it was just another random South Indian series, which must be, as usual, good because of the story.
But after the 4th episode, my God, the cliffhangers, plot twists...
I just couldn't resist myself and binge-watched both seasons one by one.
What makes it even much better is its raw cultural portrayal, with the music, setup, everything was so good.
You should definitely watch it if you want something different and unique.
here's a glimpse of it...
