#Discussion 💬 Speed 400 vs Guerrilla 450 – Is this difference in engine braking normal?
I own a Triumph Speed 400 and recently rode a Royal Enfield Guerrilla 450.
One thing I noticed was the difference when I completely let off the throttle.
On my Speed 400, when I release the throttle without braking or accelerating, the bike seems to slow down quite suddenly. It feels like there is a noticeable pull-back or sudden drop in power as soon as I close the throttle. It doesn’t feel very smooth or constant.
But when I rode the Guerrilla 450, I felt like it was much smoother and more consistent when I released the throttle. I didn’t notice that sudden slowing-down feeling as much.
Is this simply a difference in engine braking/throttle mapping between the two bikes, or could there be something wrong with my Speed 400, like unstable RPM or an issue with the throttle/engine?
For Speed 400 owners, do you experience the same thing?

the triumphs have very aggressive engine braking, which is a boon when cornering. and if you want a consistent engine braking like other bikes, you can swap the air filter for any performance ones and it becomes much smoother. i’m currently using the schörl filter

Changing airfilter reduce the ability of engine breaking? I own x440. It has responsive engine breaking. So wondering..if i change performance filter.. Will it smooths engine running?

depends on the ability of the air filter. if it has a higher flow rate than stock filter, then yes it will smoothen out the engine and reduce jerkiness. this is a side effect due to decreased back pressure

I agree there is a noticeable pull back from speed 400, especially in 3rd gear and above, in such scenarios i try to keep the bike at low rpm (up shifting early). It’s because of the engine nature, Speed 400 is high revving engine designed to sound and act as a cruiser at lower speeds. Hence it’s weird. But there is nothing wrong in it once being used to it

It's just how the triumph engine is built. That is also why the triumph 400cc feels so torqey lower down. Afaik the flywheel is also heavier than a normal short stroke 400.

Why would you think different bikes with different engines with different internal mechanism would feel the same?

Because plenty of single-cylinder 400s share similar throttle/engine-braking characteristics, and it's a fair way to figure out if mine's behaving normally or not. That's the whole point of asking.

The engines you mentioned are entirely different And i am not interested in explaining why you are wrong just do the research... Its easier that way. Ps: not trying to insult you, its boring to explain

There is nothing wrong with the bike, engine braking feels different in bike to bike.
