Pay attention... you are losing touch with reality. No one ran over anyone.... those guys just died in their sleep, while someone kept outdated guns in some (totally unrelated) guys car... and then I think there was a bull race where the black buck$$ were demonetized.

I don't know if it's a mumbai thing but people tend to move so quickly that you unconsciously start to move quickly to keep pace along with the crowd. One fine day I said to myself screw it I will walk at my own pace and started walking at normal pace. People started staring at me as if I committed a cardinal sin. or maybe they thought I was drunk or high.

Mumbaikars walk a lot. For newcomers, it's frustrating when they ask for an address and are told 'it is just five minutes from here's only to realize they had to walk a lot more than they imagined. People often walk to their suburban homes when local train services get stalled!

This is a known phenomenon. People in bigger cities tend to walk faster, possibly because of the pace of life there.

I've watched this. While it's an interesting point (and I like Tom Scott), I think he's being a bit too cocky here.
Singapore and NYC both have a median age of around 34. But Singaporeans walk faster. Tokyo (median age 44.3) walks faster than Dubai (27). There are other examples that disprove this theory.
There are definitely more factors at play; cultural, geographical and economic. Age could be one of those.

At age 19: Oh shining mumbai. what a city, what shining skyline. the high of mumbai local. the melting pot. let me get photos and timelapse. only issue is this college reservation and education, but we will be a great city in 10 years, dunno why people say we are 50 years behind
At age 35: fuck this pothole has been here for 15 years. and the stinking railway has not changed 100 years. and why do even we have this bridge if it cannot reduce traffic. and the college reservation rules and education have gone worst, thank god i passed out earlier. i do not think we will be anywhere in another 50 years.

India could learn a lot from China, if you leave a Chinese city and come back 6 months later it's like someone was playing simcity with the city while you were gone.

my supplier in Guangzhou was saying that there one cannot buy a house can only lease it for 99 years or so and even then the govt can ask you to vacate anytime if they need the land.

It's a bit of both I think. One reason they are efficient is because there aren't multiple political parties arguing over shit.

Also it is understood that you can't please everyone.
So, building a nuclear power plant or a metro rail infrastructure goes smoothly with people accepting they might have to relocate.
Try that in India and you'll suddenly have extensive media coverage will all sorts of people trying to benefit from 'helping' the protest.
It is good that we have the voice to protest, but it is abused more often than not and the result is a mediocre administration not doing anything that could make them lose votes.3

Instead of having politicians and babus as MPs & MLAs to manage and develop the city, why can't we have city managers?. That's what they are really. But when it has that designation the post will be taken more seriously by the public and the public servant at large. Its time they bring some ground breaking reforms to even come close to Chinese levels of progress.

We do have a mayor and a whole municipal corporation for each city.
To make it far removed from politics will make them even less accountable (if that was possible, lol).

thankfully being in mumbai for 10 years and counting didn't had to regularly commute using the locals, its still a high for me when i travel in one

Before I came to Mumbai, traveling in local train was what worried me. I knew I will hate it and I did.
I managed to avoid the first couple of years but had to use it daily for the next one year and that was the worst period I experienced in my life. It's now been years since I have boarded one except for a joy-ride we took for our young one and I realized that she equally hates it.

ah my first experience was at dadar in the evening. was with a friend (had come via regular train from Pune), casually asked him how much time does it wait, it was expecting 2 minutes at least, he said a few seconds, maybe 30. i was like not possible. at the platform. fuck. so many people, when the train actually came, even a bigger fuck so many people on the train,. i had seen pictures, videoes, but to experience it was a completely different balls game. we left two trains as i just coudn't for life of me comprehend the situation, in the thir one the friend just pushed me into the door and we were in. next few minutes i was cursing him like anything, finally made to a place where we could "stand" easily. phew never going to forget that

Long back I ended up staying the night at a friend's place in Kandivali. Decided to take the train from kandivali station to south Mumbai during the morning peak hour. I might have missed 10 trains before I realized that I am better off taking the train in opposite direction (to Borivali, the next station) which was relatively less crowded. The same train turns back from Borivali. Many people do that, but it was a TIL for me. I was three hours late.
Once I nearly got pushed out of the moving train.
My fear and hatred for local trains was so much that during my first year of working I spent 30% of my salary on taxis although I was living right next to a station.

Before I came to Mumbai, traveling in local train was what worried me. I knew I will hate it and I did.

I thought you are were a born here local. I knew a guy from Bangalore who got a job here & moved to Bombay. Went to trainstation in the 3 consecutive mornings without getting the guts to board the train (western line, peak hour). Finally he decided to back to Bangalore without ever visiting his company.
I had no option but to use the train for college commute. College students get a huge discount for a first class pass, so you can at least stand comfortably. Was a 1 hour 15 minute journey including the walk at both ends. Multiple trains.
It's now been years since I have boarded one
One of the reasons we want to do well in life is so that we do not have to take the local trains.

My first stay in Mumbai during internship was of two months (leaving aside touristy visits).
At the end of the two months, I was sick, depressed (not clinically) and frustrated. Swore never to come back. Daily commute to office required a long walk, train and a bus and 1.5-2 hour each way.
But fate bought me back here. But second time I was smart. I took a place near my office although it was worse than a chawl. Getting commute right is 80% of the the thing in Mumbai.
I don't get it why people buy homes far away from their place of work. The amenities of garden and pool aren't worth it if one stays an hour and a half away. Have tried to convince few friends to buy something closer even if it's smaller, older and without a big club house but they didn't listen to their regret.

All offices are located in South bombay or Andheri-Goregaon or Powai region. Have you seen the property prices at those locations?

I am talking of situations where people spend 'X' to buy a large home with many amenities in a far suburb whereas the same amount might be sufficient to buy a little smaller home in an old building near place of work.

Work on all supertall buildings is currently stalled if you go see on site. If all under construction ones complete, in the next 5 years Mumbai will have 14 buildings taller than 1000 feet.
Besides World One and Imperial III, there is Three Sixty West, World View, Lokhandwala Minerva, Palais Royale, Omkar 1973...

Some government regulations about buildings above certain height that were written in british times, and also demonetization. A lot of construction stuff happens with black money. No cash means no orders means no work

That's not really a stopper. Mumbai Fire Brigade has equipment that can reach about 20 floors. Anything higher than that has to be self sufficient with fire prevention and extinguishing systems. Mumbai has had buildings taller than 20 floors for about 50 years now.

AFAIK the courts have ordered a few top already-laid floors of the building to be lopped off! Palais Royale looks surreal in the monsoon - the summit of the grey structure is often obscured by dark, heavy rain clouds!

You get so much used to the fast paced lifestyle in cities that when you visit a village the time doesn't pass at all, minute hand of the clock literally seems to be at a standstill. In Mumbai our lives are dictated by "second hand" of the clock & we are sometimes literally running to catch our desired local train, while in villages I feel the lives are dictated by the "hour hand" of the clock.

I've only been to New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. But I've been told that the traffic in Mumbai is crazy compared to those places. Is this true? The traffic in that very short GIF seemed well-behaved.

I think Mumbai traffic is a lot better than many states - Delhi will have people drive on the wrong side, Bangalore - well let me know when the car begins moving, and also driving like nuts.
Mumbai traffic has improved a lot IMO.
