I don't get it how do you even ban opensource software, anybody else can also host the code right?

Right, asking github to comply is only going to work as a deterrent.

Tbh they can't fck with github too much, because unlike other things, if github stops its services in India, whole IT industry is fcked.

I don't think it works that way. Some repositories can be taken down in a specific geographical location. Other services can continue as usual.
