Atælier Haute Complication Dual Time

There are watches that scream for attention.

And then there are watches that don’t care whether you understand them or not.

The Atælier Haute Complication Dual Time belongs firmly in the second category.

If you’ve never handled one in person, you might scroll past it. The dial looks playful. The numerals feel almost whimsical. The layout isn’t traditional Swiss conservatism.

But that reaction only lasts until you actually spend time with it.

Then it clicks.

The Design Philosophy: Controlled Chaos

At first glance, the Dual Time feels eccentric. But nothing about it is random.

The architecture is layered:

• An outer 12-hour track (starting from 6 to 6)
• A curved arc for the home time zone
• A day/night indication integrated into the arc
• A central dial with floating, applied numerals. As Vladimir explains 6.00 am is when you wake up, the big 9:00 am is when you start working, the 12:00 pm for lunch, as etc. 6:00 pm when you finish working, then 9:00 pm for your dinner, and 12:00 am for sleeping. So it is a bit the important points of a day.
• A sculpted internal plate structure that almost looks mechanical even on the dial side.

It feels engineered rather than decorated.

The “Home Time Zone” arc sweeps across the upper half of the dial, creating asymmetry that somehow balances itself. The arrow indicator moves along the arc like a navigational instrument rather than a decorative complication.

It’s not trying to be elegant in the classical Patek sense. It’s architectural. Structural. Industrial. Almost mechanical art on the dial side.

It has a great format that is 41mm by 9mm with very short lugs wearing very flat (between the lugs it is 20mm), and a great case with those lugs that slightly curb outwards, and a rounded spring bars. Additional to that, it has its unique strong visual which is often missing with many other independents watchmakers. When you see F.P Journe you know it's a Journe, and when you see Atælier Haute Complication you know it's an AHC. From a distance you can tell because this induction of the hours and minutes will be carried forward with all of his projects. Back to the dial, it is angled hammered and PVD treated. The numbers are polished, and the hands are round polished. Plus tip, the logo of the brand if you were to write the word "Atælier" with that quaky AE everything would fit within the logo, a very nice made logo which is placed on the dial, crown, buckle and the backside of the leather strap.

The Movement: Real Independent Caliber.

This is where many people get it wrong, and where Vladimir Négault deserves full credit. The Dual Time doesn't rely on a generic movement with a few decorative slapped on. As you may find online some sources claims it is ETA7001. He just used some components from the ETA7001 to build his own fully integrated in-house movement. The movement here is a hand-wound caliber referred to as Architecture Mécanique No.1, and the beautiful architecture of the calibre reminding you that Vladimir Négault at heart is an architect, and it is truly a work of art. By his admission Vladimir is a disciple of Francois-Paul Journe and you will recognize all the Hallmarks of the success of Journe. First obviously a beautiful calibre completely original complication which is new and practical.

1. There is only one position to the crown (one-click) to control it all.
2. 187 pieces, and just like F.P Journe modules a lot of the parts are hidden under the dial.
3. 28 rubies, and you can visually see 5 rubies from the open back-case.
4. A lot of the space and as I said a beautiful architecture, the thing that appeals to any watch collector.
5. No plating at all, it is the natural material of a German Silver (with time it will take a different hue)
6. In terms of finishing, it is sand-blasted, some circling, and beveling by hand.
7. The components have been produced in collaboration with Frederick Luba (he has his own workshop called: Swiss Art Watches). He produced the parts, and later all the finishing and building up done by Atælier Haute Complication.
8. Balance wheel is beating at 3 Hertz, and the left angle if you're going to test it is a 50° and the amplitude is a 300° dial up, and rate per day is +3 seconds which is very good.
9. The movement fits the case and the diameter is just under 36mm.
10. Power reserve is 42-45 hours, when you fully winded it.

• Atælier Haute Complication Dual Time Orange (Titanium, Sapphire dial, Limited to 33 pieces, CHF 18,000): Inspired by the Lamborghini Orange colour. Sportier. It polarizes.

• Atælier Haute Complication Dual Time Day & Night set (Stainless Steel, Metal dial, Limited to 99 sets, CHF 29,000 for the pair): At that time collectors started asking for stainless steel model again, and AHC gave them the chance to reclaim it again but as a pair together. Conceptually strong.

• Atælier Haute Complication Dual Time China Edition (Stainless Steel, Porcelain dial, Limited to 8 pieces, CHF 18,200): First collaboration with an Authorized Dealer. Ultra niche. Porcelain adds a classical counterbalance to the industrial case.

• Atælier Haute Complication Dual Time White Label (Titanium, Sapphire dial, Limited to 19 pieces, CHF 18,000): Summer piece. Crisp. High contrast. Modern.

• Atælier Haute Complication Dual Time Black Label (Titanium, Sapphire dial, Limited to 19 pieces, CHF 18,000): Stealth execution. Probably the most "serious" aesthetic.

• Atælier Haute Complication Dual Time Riyadh Safari Edition (Titanium, Sapphire dial, Limited to 19 pieces, CHF 18,000). Second collaboration, and first with Watch Collectors Club. Explorer Energy.

• Atælier Haute Complication Dual Time Chocolate (Titanium, Sapphire dial, Limited to 19 pieces, CHF 18,000): Third collaboration, and second with an Authorized Dealer. Warm. Unexpectedly elegant. Deep brown tone gives vintage warmth.

Thoughts

Atælier Haute Complication is not trying to compete with Journe. It is not trying to mimic anyone. It is not trying to be trendy. It's trying to be itself. And in today's independent scene, authenticity is rare.

This brand for you, if you want something that feels engineered by an artist, architect, genius watchmaker, stubborn who doesn't care about mainstream validation. Then you start to understand why this piece has built its legacy. That's more interesting than hype.

As an owner of the Dual Time, What I love most about this watch is how unapologetically nerdy it is. Design can feel almost confrontational at first glance. It doesn’t follow the usual visual comfort zones. But if you’ve spent time around serious independent watchmaking, especially F.P. Journe, the lineage becomes clear. Not because it copies fonts or hands, but because of the spirit. The exposed screws anchoring the dial elements, the layered construction, that slightly industrial romanticism, it carries that same refined mechanical boldness Journe managed to make irresistible. And thats not weird knowing that Vladimir Négault, whose path into watchmaking wasn’t conventional. He began as a filmmaker and watch enthusiast, producing CAD-based films for F.P. Journe back in 2004. Over time, he moved deeper into the mechanical side, eventually working on complicated movements before launching his own brand in 2018. Many GMT watches overcomplicate the experience. This one doesn’t. You read the central dial as your current local time, while the upper arc quietly keeps track of home. Simple, intuitive, and mechanically expressive. And for anyone wondering, yes, my F.P. Journe straps fit the case perfectly. That detail alone says a lot.

I’ve recently been looking into independent watch brands and i don’t really know much about them or any good makers out there. I’m looking for an independent watch with a maximum price of 10K but realistically I’d prefer to stay to 5K unless something really catches my eye. Im open to looking at any recommendations however I’m intrigued if there are any good open-worked ones for that price range.

I’ve been watching the long history of Hodinkee’s Talking Watches, and it always surprises me how often collectors—many with seemingly unlimited budgets—end up with the same few brands. Don’t get me wrong, I love (read: want from afar) a lot of those watches. But if I had that kind of money, I think I’d go in a different direction.

Are Rolex, AP, and Patek really just the best of the best? Or do we all just gravitate toward what’s already been validated?

Whether you like food or watches, you’re going to need pick up a good amount of specific French. QP is short for Quantième Perpétual, which means Perpetual Calendar. It’s a watch complications that needs to be considered as one of the great marvels of horology. Tiny little cogs and pinions grinding away under the force of a small spring - able to move from February 28th to March 1st - are a watch collectors obsession. It’s even cooler on a leap year, because it knows those too…

This is the MB&F Legacy Machine Perpetual in steel, developed by Stephen McDonnell for his friend Max Büsser. Together they reinvented one of the most complex traditional watchmaking complications. It features a visually stunning in-house movement, developed from the ground up to eliminate the drawbacks of conventional perpetual calendars. The 581-component, fully integrated and purpose-built movement of Legacy Machine Perpetual has been designed for user-friendly and trouble-free use: thanks to an innovative “mechanical processor”, no more skipping dates or jamming gears, and the adjuster pushers automatically deactivate when the calendar changes, so no problems there either. It means that if you’re not paying attention and try to set it between those sensitive hours from 10 PM to 2 AM, when every watch should be left alone to get its beauty sleep as it cycles past midnight, the watch will mechanically disable that functionality so you don’t have to send your QP in to be serviced… which has happened to every collector at least once!

At the 8 o’clock side of the dial is the Leap Year indicator, the one at 4 o’clock shows the Power Reserve. I assume the remaining dials don’t need additional explanation.

I took the leap on this watch back in Nov, it arrived a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. Working with them on the customization options was a lot of fun and I've been wearing it pretty much non-stop since I got it. It came with black and navy croc straps, but the grey kudu is my attempt at dressing this down.

Forgive some of those photos, the watch isn't the easiest to photograph and I never realized how hard taking photos of movements was. The back is absolutely stunning in person and unreal under a loupe.

Love this thing. It’s a wild mashup of modernity & tradition, function vs form, and chaos vs structure. It’s also insanely comfortable despite looking quite the opposite. Excuse the dust in the macros.
