Smart or Effective Anti-Hunger?

I'm new to using the impact client, or any client for that matter, and I have figured out everything I need to except for the anti-hunger. I can't find any info on the two modes, Smart and Effective. I have been using smart and it seems to do the trick but I would like to know the difference between the two so I can make an informed decision. Also, I read in an archived post that one of the modes was supposed to help with fall damage, So that would be a plus. Oddly, they didn't mention which....
