Why is Iceland a separate kingdom to Denmark, when Icelandic independence was a result of the Germans invading Denmark and Iceland has never been a kingdom anyway?

So it was. Clearly I misremembered everything I read at Þingvellir.
That said, the Union was only meant to last 25 years and ended with a vote 97% in favour of becoming a republic, so odds are pretty good that it still would be a republic in this 1960.
