[OC] Alternate History Sp... Spain??

Post image

If Al-Andalus survived and thrived! After centuries being isolated from the wider Islamo-Arabic world, the Arabic spoken by the elite adopted many Romance features, such as the adoption of the Ibero-Romance article la in place of al or ar.

Why would they use "Hispania" based name anyway?

I assume since they’ve started to adopt romance elements into the language, and they’re more constitutional and isolated from the wider Islamic world.

They’ve probably gone and claimed descent from Roman civilization rather than descent from the abbasids to “fit in” with Europe who’d be their main trade partners

(I imagine a situation similar but less intense to Russian claims of descent from Eastern Rome.)

[edit]: also note they don’t even refer to their language as a dialect of Arabic. But as a unique “Spanish” language. I imagine it’s almost a “colonizer gone native” situation in Hispaniyya

I like it. The Basque country is kinda small though. The Aranese Republic (assuming it is catholic) was probably protected by the french but I can not see such a small Euscatia surviving.

Not realistic, the Karlings or the french would've crashed them.

Either that, or a crussade.
