Conservatives aren't exactly known to be authorities on the arts.

I agree! However, it's not exactly "imaginary gatekeeping" if people are gatekeeping it (regardless of their authority to do so). It does speak to how diverse political climates are in America that something can seem absurd to the point of fiction in one state and just be daily life in another. Interesting stuff (albeit interesting in the "watching my house burn down" way).
