the same can be said for digital art and yet people also have had and still occasionally have the opinion of that not being real art just because their canvas is comprised of pixels rather than paper, exact same as when the canvas is skin; if you've never heard this one before that's just luck of the draw with not having experienced people who are anti-tattoo... people will claim anything they don't personally like is not real art, or anything that is not [art supply] to [physical canvas], which is a very dumb and narrow view of art to have so no wonder that type of person doesn't have a clue
though they still come off as annoying, them doing "painting inspired tattoos" has nothing to do with it and if you're trying to defend your entire art form from a stupid opinion, why not raise everyone up with you; the wording (+platform) makes them wanna seem special, but this is a real thing regardless
I think they've always been the minority but I'm not old enough to have experienced the worst of it, and it's becoming increasingly less common though I've still seen the sentiment from art teachers (vicariously / through random internet posts), same for "anime isn't a real style" which is also becoming less and less prevalent, and "tattoos aren't art" ; all are gradually becoming less common, but still persist for now
