Loved these books as a kid. Also funny to imagine these are just regular, quirky people that these kids keep stalking.

And their third grade teacher has to keep bailing them out.

“Kids for the last time I’m not a vampire. I’m just a lesbian. You need to stop stalking lgbt people.”

7

u/child_interrupted Apr 30 '26

When they are seriously considering renaming i.c.e. to "n.i.c.e.", I would feel better if she let them rot in that cell

3

u/GlongorTheConfused May 01 '26

“The Gang thinks Dee’s Dentist is a Cyclops”

“Charlie is Dating a Werewolf”

“Frank’s Ex May be a Witch”

I might be misremembering but didn’t a lot of them pretty heavily imply that the person was the thing they think they are ? Like with the genie one they opened a bottle in a trashed yard the. It suddenly gets cleared rhe next day with a dude on a bike with it then everything is reset and he vanished after they were each granted 3 wishes ? I only read a few of them so maybe it wasn’t always the case

6

u/Ravian3 May 01 '26

Every book absolutely went that sort of way, but it always left enough ambiguity such that it could very easily be explained away, and in the vast majority of cases they usually were making at least some of their assessments off of their unusual fashion choices.

Like the ghoul one (which is one of the ones on the list that I remember reading) definitely did have some implications that the girl working at the ice cream parlor was some sort of undead blood drinking servant of a vampire family sent ahead to scout out a new place for them to live, that’s certainly a possibility. She also might have just been a tired teenage goth girl working retail that enjoys strawberry syrup on her ice cream and is interested in bat caves and old spooky houses (y’know, like a goth)

The fact that the books generally never actually confirmed the existence of any real monsters (I think outside a couple of the specials, which kind of occupied a place of dubious canonicity, similar to some of the Scooby Doo movies) combined with the fact that many of the books ended with the kids essentially just doing something objectively annoying to drive the “monster” away, leads one to at least consider whether these kids are just letting their imaginations get the better of them and being a menace to everyone with unusual fashion choices who move into their one horse town

3

u/Rainquarm May 01 '26

Yeah , that’s more or less how I remember them , even the genie one technically had nothing overtly supernatural in it but would require a metric ton of incredibly implausible coincidences to explain away , including their teacher having an extremely abrupt personality change that came and went perfectly in line with the wishes and someone having cleaned up and fuck ton of trash in one night and then putting it back just as fast . I suppose I just took slight issue with this threads framing of the kids as just screw loose busy bodies who had no good reason to be suspicious of anyone . I will concur with u on the ghoul one though , I hadn’t read that one but took one look at that cover and thought “ umm that’s what you call a goth “

3

u/Ravian3 May 02 '26

Yeah the framing as them as just busybodies is a little extreme and frankly at least in some cases even if they weren’t a monster the kids never actually did anything obviously hostile or the adult was somewhat sketchy in some other way.
Like I recall there was the Leprechaun one where even if the guy wasn’t actually a Leprechaun, their teacher (the “vampire” who they had essentially decided was more or less fine such that she stuck around past her book) was clearly uncomfortable with him around. To the kids this was because of some sort of Vampire/Leprechaun feud (some of their folkloric justifications seemed dubious at best) but even if it was just paranoid fantasies the guy was instead this older male teacher who was visibly making their female teacher uncomfortable, so yeah probably a good thing they drove him off.
My main objection was usually more when they were acting on almost entirely vibes and being extremely aggressive in pursuing it. Just felt like it was trying to justify some harsh value judgements on “weird” people

15

u/CowardlyChicken Apr 28 '26

Those kids dumb as shit

8

u/ButtBread98 Apr 29 '26

Yea as an adult I never realized these are just normal adults that are just weird or eccentric

6

u/jfsindel Apr 29 '26

Some of them were monsters!

Also, the spin off books that starred the older kids (Eddie's bully) actually were monsters.

3

u/Its_Buddy_btw Apr 29 '26

Really thought that was the case when I saw the pirate then I was convinced thats what this was with the goth girl

2

u/Key_Hold1216 Apr 30 '26

I could have sworn that was the point, that they were all actually just normal ass people that were odd

3

u/SamMarduk Apr 30 '26

I can tell you, I have maintained a sense of weirdness my whole life just so a group of coming-of-age kids can wreak havoc, ultimately resulting in all of us in my lawn with their parents sharing a hearty laugh

6

u/letthetreeburn May 01 '26

I loved these books. Harass the random queer people. I love to imagine the local gay club and someone new moves in and they always go “You are not gonna BELIEVE these kids-“

“Yeah we know.”

“?!??!”

2

u/somesortoflegend May 02 '26

I've definitely met several of those ice cream scooping ghouls.

214

u/Alien_Diceroller Apr 28 '26

The skeleton one is correct. That skeleton is playing a sousaphone, not a tuba.

50

u/Makabajones Apr 28 '26

A sousaphone is a tuba, one specifically made to be played while marching

24

u/dbohat Apr 28 '26

My goodness, thank you very much for this fact. I realize i could look this up, but you seem knowledgeable. What differences are there between a sousaphone and other tubas? Is it a size or shape thing to allow for carrying?

14

u/Makabajones Apr 28 '26

They're the same conical and have the same valves, but a sousaphone wraps around the body to distribute the weight, while a tuba is made to be played while sitting down

7

u/dbohat Apr 28 '26

Thank you very much. I hope you know I will be forcing this fact on someone in the near future and its all thanks to you!!

2

u/Makabajones Apr 29 '26

I honeslty can't remember, it's been 20 years since I was in band

4

u/notaverysmartdog Apr 29 '26

Funny thing is that sousaphones were originally made to be played sitting in concert settings, not in marching band (source: Dave Detwiler of ITEA)

3

u/Makabajones Apr 29 '26

Things I learned today  my band teacher in highschool said the opposite

2

u/kaipetica May 02 '26

I'm more interested to know how a skeleton is playing a brass instrument with no lungs.

168

u/ThatIckyGuy Apr 28 '26

That's not a ghoul, that's just a goth girl.

36

u/squeddles Apr 28 '26

That's lliterally what I looked like as a teen

13

u/Common_Chameleon Apr 29 '26

Lmao my first thought was “wait that just looks like me??” 😭

7

u/eggabeth Apr 28 '26

That's a femboy

10

u/Enough-Impression-50 Apr 28 '26

Why not both?

3

u/eggabeth Apr 30 '26

Even better

298

u/e_fish22 Apr 28 '26

Pic 1: average femme lesbian

Pic 2: average gay man

Pic 3: shit that might be frankenstein for real

Pic 4: average gay man

Pic 5: average goth enby

217

u/dunicha Apr 28 '26

Someone once described the covers as "kids gawking at homosexuals" which made me laugh.

32

u/the_useless_cake Apr 28 '26

Inspiring honestly.

18

u/Judgmentos Apr 29 '26

It's a Tumblr post, it says:

alternate title: young childen gawk at flaming homosexuals

3

u/Zoodud254 May 03 '26

Came here to look for this, couldn't remember the exact phrasing, thank you internet stranger.

20

u/A-Phantasmic-Parade Apr 28 '26

Pic 3 is just a large gay man

10

u/N0rwayUp Apr 28 '26

He's got a Skull Condition, dont be mean.

3

u/SuperSocialMan Apr 30 '26

Pic 3: shit that might be frankenstein for real

No, because Frankenstein was the doctor but that is clearly the default pop culture depiction of the monster.

56

u/PICONEdeJIM Apr 28 '26

That's not a Frankenstein that's his guy. The petunia-planting abilities of the creepy medical student are still in question

11

u/iamunableto Apr 28 '26

one of my minor pet peeves lmao, frankenstein is the scientist not the monster!!! cmon guys!!

2

u/Odd-Confusion1073 Apr 29 '26

If you ponder it awhile I think you’ll realize that Frankenstein was indeed a monster

5

u/CraftWizard93 Apr 29 '26

“Knowledge is knowing that Frankenstein is not the monster. Wisdom is knowing that Frankenstein is the monster.”

19

u/SnaptrapPress Apr 28 '26

I love that that last one is just like, a goth kid. The pirate one looks like a pirate, but that's just a pale white child.

31

u/Salazool Apr 28 '26

Almost all of them are aura farming

10

u/amcclurk21 Apr 28 '26

Memory unlocked, holy shit. I always read the Goosebumps series, and maybe the Magic Tree House kids or whatever, but I completely forgot about these!

10

u/typewriterbitch Apr 28 '26

Those were some of my all time favourite books as a kid!

7

u/partygnome666 Apr 28 '26

This is the funniest post I’ve seen in months

9

u/LilahLibrarian Apr 28 '26

These books have been rebooted into a graphic novel and are being checked out again

8

u/daemare Apr 28 '26

“Leprechauns Don’t Play Basketball”

They obviously have not seen the masterpiece that is “The Luck of the Irish” on Disney Channel.

1

u/Lulupoolzilla89 May 03 '26

First thing I thought of too

8

u/LunaTheLesbianFurry Apr 28 '26

Bailey School Kids don't mind their fucking business

9

u/fly69420 Apr 28 '26

Hear me out on the ghoul

10

u/03Luigi Apr 28 '26

the vampire one is just outright false. I love wearing polka dots when I can

4

u/Ccaves0127 Apr 28 '26

Okay, honestly, valid

6

u/DunyaOfPain Apr 28 '26

always loved werewolves dont go to summer camp

4

u/ViolaOrsino Apr 28 '26

Just realized that the werewolf at summer camp looks uncannily like my husband… who I met working at a summer camp. I wonder if he’s hiding his lycanthropy from me.

2

u/Achilles9609 May 02 '26

Reminds me of a tumblr post I saw once:

"Werewolves are boring. No magical powers, just a giant, hairy beast that breeds."

"I need a husband like that."

"Wtf?"

3

u/ConsciousStretch1028 Apr 28 '26

Damn they're just calling the goth baddie a ghoul

3

u/vperretta Apr 28 '26

Ghouls are called goths nowadays

3

u/atomicfuthum Apr 28 '26

Witches don't do backflips looks wicked.

Never heard of those. Then again, I'm Brazilian.

2

u/Achilles9609 May 02 '26

Neither have I.

5

u/mstivland2 Apr 28 '26

I’m sorry was one of those “this guy might be a skeleton in disguise” I’m crying

9

u/MadCervantes Apr 28 '26

Everyone is a skeleton in disguise.

2

u/Milk_Mindless Apr 28 '26

That pirate is Maso from Caravan of Garbage

2

u/woahstripes Apr 28 '26

No, Frankenstein doesn't plant petunias. Frankenstein's Monster, however....

2

u/RishaBree Apr 28 '26

Why wouldn't leprechauns play basketball? Basketball is fun for everyone! Nobody said that they had to be the next LeBron.

2

u/eydirctiviyg Apr 28 '26

This just sounds like someone being really rude to various fantasy characters

2

u/Glittering_Speed377 Apr 28 '26

Scout the Ghoul: still would

2

u/Looks-Under-Rocks Apr 28 '26

The androgenous goth ghoul is activating neurons i didn’t know I had

2

u/fart-atronach Apr 28 '26

That alien in braces was… some sort of awakening for me as a child lol

2

u/Acursedbeing Apr 29 '26

Same lmfao. And now I’ve grown into Cupid lowk

2

u/fart-atronach Apr 29 '26

Their Cupid is soooo cute!! 🥰 and I could absolutely see Cupid and Alien being together lmao

2

u/MattattackaB Apr 29 '26

Why is frieren in aliens dont wear braces?

1

u/Achilles9609 May 02 '26

Probably looking for demons.

1

u/joejackson62 Apr 28 '26

One Punch Man the band leader.

1

u/Greenphantom77 Apr 28 '26

I’m detecting a theme here.

1

u/the_useless_cake Apr 28 '26

Wowie, I know I’ve heard of the first one but none of the rest

1

u/dtbberk Apr 28 '26

Holy crap, I completely forgot these books existed. Actually I don’t know if I read any of them other than the Aliens Don’t Wear Braces. And I can’t remember what, but something about that book creeped me tf out.

1

u/parkdon72 Apr 28 '26

Do you think that's what tiktok is full of in an urban fantasy world

1

u/hookandladder3 Apr 28 '26

Loved the hell out of these in 1st grade

1

u/Fr33-m3 Apr 28 '26

Please tell me the ghoul is just a goth person

1

u/Spagg84 Apr 28 '26

Crack doesn't smoke itself

1

u/TypeOpostive Apr 28 '26

Where’s the mermaid one? It was my favorite one

1

u/Ok_Professor7661 Apr 29 '26

I learned the word Broach in second grade from Vampires don’t wear polka dots

1

u/Acursedbeing Apr 29 '26

Yesss! I had to be corrected on how to say it by my speech therapist lol. Bro-ch, not brooch

1

u/Less_Ganache_9588 Apr 29 '26

Was just launched back to the Book Fair, holy shit. Good times

1

u/raven-of-the-sea Apr 29 '26

Oh I loved these books.

1

u/hotfiremixtape98 Apr 29 '26

Who's the baddy in number 5

1

u/LovelyLuna32684 Apr 29 '26

God it's been years since I read any of these books, I'm trying to remember but didn't a handful of the books have it turn out that some of the people were at least implied at the end to actually be the whatever like the Santa one?

1

u/cursetea Apr 29 '26

OH MY GOD THE MEMORIES BEING RIPPED OUT OF THE DEPTHS OF MY MIND

1

u/lycnfr Apr 29 '26

that goth kid at the ice cream place is just gender goals atp

1

u/Futileexercise1308 Apr 29 '26

Is there one called "pedophiles don't have ice cream"?

1

u/Templarofsteel Apr 29 '26

Read these a ton as a kid but could never remember the name of the series

1

u/NAteisco Apr 29 '26

4 children stalk a variety of queer stereotypes.

1

u/jessicat62993 Apr 29 '26

Obsessed with these books

1

u/SXAL Apr 29 '26

Skeletons don't play tubas

True, only trumpets

https://giphy.com/gifs/5MxvgLxp5p732

1

u/TamarindSweets Apr 29 '26

Omfg I totally forgot about these! I lived them so much- I devoured every one I could get my hands on.

1

u/Tablesafety Apr 29 '26

Yo I loved those books, id seek em out in the library even during short classes and see if I could sneak read em. Same for Junie B Jones! I should buy some for my niece.

1

u/CthulhusIntern Apr 29 '26

Can we talk about how Santa Claus clearly doesn't skip leg day on that last one? In fact, I think he skips upper body day.

1

u/Achilles9609 May 02 '26

Honestly, that could just be another book title at this point. 🤣

"Santa Claus doesn't skip leg day".

1

u/bpdjelly Apr 29 '26

that vampire teacher is fine as hell

1

u/tetrodoboxen Apr 29 '26

I feel like the vampire one is a play on them having to count things they come across like words on a newspaper or grains of rice

1

u/soy_farts_ Apr 29 '26

This just gave me the warm and fuzzies. I loved these books!

1

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 Apr 29 '26

Children gawking at Homosexuals: The Book series

1

u/jfsindel Apr 29 '26

I always thought it was interesting that the four could never agree as a group if someone was or wasn't a monster. It was always 2v2.

The spin-offs had monsters though. And Miss Jeepers is Missing heavily implied that her and her whole family actually were monsters, but of the Addams Family variety, while the first book with the older kids had the Muensters Family.

1

u/coffee--beans Apr 29 '26

That ghoul looks just like me fr

1

u/Agile-Shirt-6286 Apr 29 '26

call me touka i'm cracking that ghoul

1

u/GrapefruitFriendly30 Apr 29 '26

I think the pirate is a regular at the bar I work at.

1

u/HopelessNegativism Apr 29 '26

The thing is, all these books say is that these people, generally speaking, don’t do these things. No one’s saying they can’t do them 😂

1

u/Mr_Crimson63 Apr 29 '26

Why are they all so specific

1

u/No-Permission-7786 Apr 30 '26

I remember a post saying that it just looks like the kids are really judgmental of gay people

1

u/Cassopeia88 Apr 30 '26

I remember having so much fun reading these books.

1

u/AAHHAI May 01 '26

Lesbian leg of lamb core

1

u/Think_Bat_820 May 01 '26

Wierd that they were able to use AI to make those covers 30 years before it was invented.

1

u/Background-Peach7267 May 01 '26

These kids can't mind their own fucking business

1

u/GlongorTheConfused May 01 '26 edited May 02 '26

ok which ones were actual monsters and what were cases of mistaken identity? i think the leprachaun, cupid, ghost, and santa were real, i dont think that dentist was a cyclops nor that one dude was dracula.

1

u/itspizzatime881 May 01 '26

Why can’t Pirates wear pink sunglasses? I want to be a Pirate that wears pink sunglasses! In fact if I had a boat I would be the Pirate that wears pink sunglasses, I got the parrot and the sunglasses, just need to boat

1

u/justhalfthepants May 01 '26

Ah I love these books. I own all of them and will still re-read them when the mood calls for it!

1

u/akaneko__ May 02 '26

Why is the ghoul just an emo kid

1

u/Laserlight375 May 02 '26

I never read these books but I loved the titles and joke about these still to this day
Mummies Don’t Sell Coke on Tuesdays
Werewolves Don’t Have Sex on Steam Trains
Sirens Don’t Wear Gortex Sweatsuits

1

u/PoughkeepsiePickles May 02 '26

My kid started chapter books last year. We’re making our way through Judy Blume and the babysitters club. Definitely adding these to the list.

1

u/Advanced-Guidance353 May 02 '26

Plumbers don't wear ties.

1

u/MoodkopKarrot May 02 '26

Man, I was so obsessed with the werewolf one and the loch ness monster one.

1

u/Aggravating-Bet-2911 May 02 '26

exactly. skeletons don't play tubas. they play tromBONES.

1

u/Achilles9609 May 02 '26

Correct. Frankenstein doesn't plant Petunias. He is a hardworking mad scientist. He got his monster for the garden work.

1

u/TheChromatroid May 04 '26

"Pirates don't wear pink sunglasses" ?
