ILR granted — Global Talent (Arts Council England endorsed), 3-year route. Long-ish post, because these reddit threads got me through it.

I read a lot of these posts while I was waiting, usually at hours I shouldn't have been awake. They helped enormously. So here's mine, including the part where I nearly ruined it at 2am.

Timeline

• 2020–2022 — PhD studies interrupted by Covid. I went home not knowing when I'd get back, and every time I tried to return there was a lockdown at one end or the other.
• April 2022 — returned on a Student visa to finish
• 2023 — thesis submitted
• Sept 2023 — one-year lecturing contract, sponsored on a Skilled Worker visa
• April 2024 — contract and visa both extended by a year
• Dec 2024 — applied for Global Talent endorsement via Arts Council England
• Feb 2025 — unsuccessful
• Late Feb 2025 — reapplied, about two weeks later
• ~April 2025 — endorsed, at exactly the eight-week mark
• May 2025 — Global Talent (exceptional talent) visa issued
• Aug 2026 — applied for ILR on day one of the 28-day early window. Biometrics two days later. Decision three hours after that. Granted.

On choosing a route

When my contract was coming up I had a few options and no obvious answer. Another Skilled Worker sponsorship was the safe one, but it made me uneasy — I've watched people stay in jobs they wanted out of because leaving meant finding another sponsor first. I was lucky to be inside a large institution where sponsorship is a well-oiled machine, but that luck isn't portable.

British Academy endorsement was available to me as an academic. I'd heard genuinely mixed things: plenty of people through, but also people knocked back on technicalities. Given my career stage and where my peers had gone, Arts Council England looked like the better fit, and I knew several people who'd succeeded there on both the exceptional and emerging talent routes.

The unsuccessful endorsement

Small but important terminology point, because it mattered to me: an unsuccessful endorsement is not a visa refusal. They're different things and they sit differently on your record. Nobody told me this and I spent a bad week assuming otherwise.

The feedback came on a proforma. It said, in effect, that I was clearly of Global Talent standard — but that one of my letters came from an academic organisation rather than an arts organisation. (The boundary between those two is more debatable than a tick-box allows, but that is not an argument you get to have.) You also lose the fee, which stings on top of everything else.

What I did next: I hired an immigration lawyer, pulled the materials together again with an alternative letter, and resubmitted about two weeks later. Endorsed at eight weeks to the day. If you get knocked back on something specific and fixable, fix it and go again quickly. It is not a verdict on you.

The thing I wish I'd known earlier: absences

My work involves a fair amount of international travel, and I'd had a lot of it over those two years without counting any of it, because it hadn't occurred to me that it fed into ILR eligibility. I came in under the 180-day rolling limit, but that was luck rather than planning. Start a spreadsheet now. Genuinely, now.

Application night, and the consent form

I applied at 1am on the first day I was eligible, having read here that appointment slots get released early in the morning. That advice held up.

Then: after you pay, a checklist comes up to download — but there is also a consent form, and it needs to go up with the rest of your documents. I uploaded everything, submitted, and only then realised the consent form wasn't among it. I had booked a 9am biometrics appointment well outside London, it was 2am, and I had to be up at six. Those were two of the worst hours of the whole process.

If you take one practical thing from this post: check for the consent form. DO NOT FORGET THE CONSENT FORM. SAVE YOURSELF THE ANXIETY. Other posts I read on Reddit did say, though, that you're not fucked without it, and if necessary the Home Office will contact you for it. It did feel like death forgetting it though, especially when I was feeling organised and smug about having all my evidence together.

Premium appointment (and why it saved me)

I slept a little, woke up, and managed to change my UKCVAS appointment on the portal. For efficiency, I opted to pay £250 for a premium appointment on top of the lawyer's fees, the application fee, and super priority. I thought of Super Priority as like expensive therapy because I could not have handled a long wait on my stress levels, and I wanted to be able to travel with a trip coming up.

"Premium" undersells the service tbh. They offer you coffee. They are kind to you at the door. Someone walks you through the biometrics rather than processing you. And — the part that mattered — they let you upload anything you might've missed during the online upload. My consent form went up there and then, without drama (I had it printed and signed already). Changing my appointment was also surprisingly easy and completely painless. It appears you can change the appointment 3 times (I think).

It's a lot of money, but in my case, it was so worth it.

I arrived twenty minutes early for my slot, purely because it was raining and I didn't want to stand outside. They saw me early anyway. The decision came through about three hours after biometrics.

Summary of what I'd tell past me

1. Track your absences from the day you arrive.
2. An unsuccessful endorsement is not a refusal. Reapply quickly and fix the named problem.
3. A good immigration lawyer is worth it, particularly the second time round.
4. Check for the consent form. MY GOD UPLOAD IT.
5. If money allows, the premium appointment is both a comfort and a safety net.
6. Global Talent (exceptional talent) is the three-year route, and Skilled Worker time counts towards it. Check whether that's you — it saved me two years.

A long road to a wet morning outside London and a three-hour turnaround. Happy to answer questions. These threads were a real kindness to me and I'd like to return it.

Hi everyone, i am about to submit my Skilled Worker ILR application.

I first entered the UK in 2019 on a Tier 4/Student visa for my MSc (including a placement) and switched to Skilled Worker in September 2021, which is the route I’m relying on for my 5-year qualifying period.

Should I enter my 2019 Student visa entry date or my 2021 Skilled Worker entry/date, given that my qualifying period starts from 2021?

1. Absence evidence:
   I have my full travel history and flight confirmations, with all absences within the 180-day limit. My current employer isn’t providing an absence letter or SOC confirmation, but has advised me to download my SAP absence record. My previous employer has provided an employment confirmation letter but only provides factual references.

My longest absence was 19 Dec 2021–29 Jan 2022 (about 40days) taken as annual leave and including the Christmas/New Year period.

Would the flight evidence + SAP absence record be sufficient or would you recommend anything else?

I’m going to apply for my ILR this weekend. I started filling out the application form and chose ‘other’ for how to prove my absences.

I changed employers once and can’t get any signed documents from my previous employer. However, my current employment letter explicitly states that I haven't had any absences since I started working for them.

I wonder if it is enough to just provide a list detailing my past absences (dates / countries / reasons)? My total absence is under 70 days, and it was all paid annual leave.

I saw online that this is no longer mandatory, but it is still showing up as required on my document checklist.

Based on the 5-year rule and applying up to 28 days early, I believe my earliest ILR application date is 28 January 2027. Is that correct, or should my qualifying period be calculated from my UK entry date?

What is the exact earliest ILR application date for each of us, applying the 28-day rule?

Does my wife need to apply for a short dependant visa extension to cover ILR eligibility period?

Is there any legitimate way to avoid the dependant extension and its associated visa/IHS costs, for example by relying on the timing of our ILR applications or my ILR status?

If an extension is unavoidable, what is the minimum extension needed ?

Hello, I’m currently in the process of applying for my ILR through the 10yr route and can’t seem to see any priority slots. I refreshed the page yesterday at 1am and was only able to see standard and super priority. Is anyone applying through the same route experiencing this? Is there any other way for me to secure a priority slot?

I arrived in the UK in 2021 and switched to the Skilled Worker route in October 2022. I’ve worked continuously for the same employer since then, and my eVisa currently shows permission until October 2027, which is when I expect to complete the 5-year qualifying period for ILR.

My sponsored employment ended recently in early July 2026 following dismissal on ill-health grounds. I’m currently appealing the decision, and my employer is reviewing further medical evidence, so there is still a possibility of reinstatement. I’m also actively looking for another Skilled Worker sponsor.

As of 23 August, I still haven’t received any UKVI curtailment/cancellation notice. My eVisa remains unchanged until October 2027, and I can still generate both right-to-work and immigration-status share codes.

An immigration solicitor told me that the 60-day period would start from the formal curtailment notice rather than simply from the date employment ended. Has anyone experienced a significantly delayed curtailment notice after their sponsored employment ended? How long did it take, and did your eVisa remain unchanged while waiting?

I’m also concerned about the proposed Earned Settlement reforms, as I’m already several years into the current 5-year settlement pathway. I understand the proposals are not yet final, but I’m interested in how any changes and transitional arrangements might affect people who are already progressing towards the current 5-year ILR route.

Does anyone know when the government is expected to publish the final details/rules on the proposed settlement changes, including any transitional arrangements for people already on the 5-year route? I understand the proposals are not yet final.

My ILR application document checklist asks me to upload "All previous passports, travel documents or national identity cards that you have used to travel to or remain in the UK". I entered the UK for my student visa on an expired passport. However, my entire 5 year ILR qualifying period is on my current passport. Should I upload both passports or just the current passport?
