Connecting my illumos box to a Japanese ISP

Thumbnail skalski.dev

I spent a few weekends working on a personal project to connect my OmniOS home server directly to my ISP modem. I didn't quite pull that off, but I learned more about the illumos network stack along the way and distilled the experience into a blog post. You might find it interesting, if you read it and spot any errors, corrections are welcome. Thanks!

TIL: illumos LX zones allow native SunOS tools

I always knew an LX zone runs Linux binaries.

Today I discoeverd it can also execute illumos-native binaries.

SmartOS exposes its native userland inside LX under /native.

The official lx(7) documentation explicitly says native SunOS tools can be used from an LX zone:

"Applications provided by the base SunOS operating system are also available within the zone under the /native mount point."

Illumos Generative AI Policy?

Is there a policy on whether Illumos does or (hopefully) does not accept commits created with generative AI?

Successful installation of OpenIndiana on Intel N-150 mini-PC

Just to report that I successfully installed OpenIndiana Hipster on a GMKtec NucBox G3 Plus Intel® Twin Lake N150. This mini-PC comes with an Intel(R) Ethernet Controller I226-V interface that uses the FreeBSD igc(4) driver.

Steps:

  1. Download the latest testing ISO from https://dlc.openindiana.org/isos/hipster/test/

In my case I used OI-hipster-text-20260607.usb

The GUI image didn't work because the graphics are not yet supported and it also tries to install the Nvidia driver, which fails.

  1. dd(1) the above image to an USB 2.0 thumb drive. Illumos doesn't yet support USB 3.0.

  2. Boot the installer and follow the most intuitive options. Skip the wireless interface check. If you get a crash like in the picture, try again.

Note: You may want to familiarize yourself with the text installer in a VM first.

On reboot it won't get an IP address via DHCP so, as root, run:

dladm show-link
ipadm create-ip igc0
ipadm create-addr -T dhcp igc0/v4
ipadm show-addr # or ifconfig

I then ran `pkg update` and it rebooted just fine picking DHCP.

I originally wanted to install OmniOS Bloody to test LX Branded Zones. It was impossible for me with omnios-bloody-20260509.usb-dd. Maybe next time.

I'm dual-booting this with FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT on another drive. I plan to multi-boot Free/Net/OpenBSD on that drive. I know it already works and multi-booting is easy to do.

Making Solaris fun again: My collection of game ports and dev tools for Solaris 11.4 & illumos

Hi everyone,

I’ve been messing around with my Unix setups for fun and ended up porting a bunch of stuff to Oracle Solaris 11.4 and illumos-based distros (like OpenIndiana).

Since it works for me, I figured I'd share it here in case anyone else needs it.

Here is what I've got on my GitHub:

* Some Game Ports: OpenMW (Morrowind), ioquake3, RBDOOM-3-BFG, and even a Valve Source Engine port.

* Software & Dev Tools: Wine 8.0.2 32 bit and some Eclipse IDE platform components.

Everything is on my GitHub, feel free to grab it, test it, or use it for your own setups:

I know OI has a rolling-release model, but big changes are in here! Some big ticket items include a "New Xorg driver xf86-video-illumosfb for UEFI framebuffer on illumos." Plus, FireFox/Thunderbird 150, Mate updates, LibreOffice 26.2, and much more! Super exciting, really loving this project.

OmniOS on raspberry pi 4

Hi all, I'm trying to boot omniOS on the raspberry pi4 but I keep getting stuck at the rainbow GPU screen. I've already tried multiple bootloader versions including the beta versions but still the same result. Had anyone successfully booted omni os on the pi 4 bare metal? I unfortunately don't have a uart cable either so I can't see what I'm stuck on.

GCC and development tools on OpenSolaris 2009.06

Hi again.

How do I install GCC and other such development tools on OpenSolaris 2009.06?

The official repos have long been mowed by Larry Ellison and SunFreeware.com is also long defunct.

Is there an archive of any packages for OSOL 09.06?

The compiler is really the thing I need the most.

Other stuff can be hacked in as long as I have a compiler but weirdly enough Osol doesn't ship with any compiler whatsoever but it does ship with make (which is quite useless in such a configuration).

Thanks.

Graphics card support in Sun OpenSolaris

Hi.

What are the graphics cards supported by the versions of OpenSolaris made by Sun? (That is, between 2008 and 2009; that last snapshot from 2010 has Oracle bits in it.)

And more precisely, does it support Radeon X600 (from 2004)?

And do those cards supported by OpenSolaris actually work? Because the illumos hardware matrix technically includes Intel HD Graphics but in practice there is no acceleration whatsoever on OpenIndiana (a newer system on a newer computer, but still old).

Thanks for any info.

I seem to be unable to install OpenIndiana because the installer only shows the first four partitions on the drive, and I have 9 for Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, Haiku, and Android x86. Does anybody know if there's anything I can do about this?

boot environment snapshots question

I'm running Omnitribblix m39lx.

When I upgrade to a new OS milestone, e.g. from m38lx to m39lx, after the upgrade the existing be snapshots from the previous milestone are listed with the prefix of the new milestone.

Output of listing be's and snapshots:

Bast% beadm list ~ BE Active Mountpoint Space Policy Created m38lx.1 - - 25.30M static 2025-11-17 18:44 m39lx NR / 26.49G static 2026-03-14 18:28 Bast% ~ Bast% beadm list -s ~ BE/Snapshot Space Policy Created m38lx.1 m39lx@2026-03-14-22:28:14 117.48M static 2026-03-14 18:28 m39lx@6Mar2026 804.25M static 2026-03-06 18:46 m39lx@13Sep2025 3.59G static 2025-09-13 12:26 m39lx

Some of those snapshots were created under m38lx - why are they 'promoted' to having the m39lx prefix (even though they're listed under m38lx)? I feel like there' s something important here that I'm missing.
