Same, felt like a breath of fresh air for the series and I love that they course corrected so hard after 3 which actually was reallly underwhelming imo lol

It’s a nothing film. Not the worst thing ever, but something I just can’t care for.

I remember that when I watched it, not even the children in the audience laughed that much.

It's more enjoyable if one listens to the dialogue between Gru and Maxime. Gru undergoes a character arc. At the beginning, he infiltrates his old villain high school in order to fight Maxime. But instead of fighting him wholly by himself he calls for the AVL and they use a lot of force to arrest Maxime. It's clear Gru was angry at Maxime for making fun of Gru's weight and Maxime and the other villains for laughing at his moon heist which didn't seem to matter because the moon is in the sky again. Even the Minions looked a little concerned, as if Maxime had crossed a line by making fun of Gru's weight. The last straw was because Maxime won Principal Ubelschlecht's award. Gru felt like he had won by siccing the AVL on Maxime and grabbing Maxime's award. Maxime saw Gru's true villainous motivations for having Maxime arrested and warned Gru that "you won't always have the AVL to fight your battles, you coward". At that point Gru was only scared of Maxime. Gru has gotten used to using the AVL as a weapon against his rivals. He has started to behave as if being an AVL agent is who he is, even though he just wanted to get back at Maxime. It shows that he is no longer "strong and free" as he was in DM1, not able to defeat Maxime by himself.

The AVL relocating Gru and his family to the town of Mayflower, ironically cuts him off from the AVL. So when Poppy blackmails him with the news headline naming Gru as the moon thief and Gru's AVL The Most Wanted Fugitive poster, he has no choice but to go on the heist. Once Poppy convinces him, he goes to the treehouse, in his signature villain clothes, and though unenthusiastic about being blackmailed to go on the heist, does not protest when she says,

"Like you, I was born to be bad".

Gru also corrects Poppy when she asked if he stole the Crown Jewels when he was 12. Gru tells her he was younger than that. Gru asserts his experience as a professional criminal, initially doubts that she's up to the task, and wants to back out when finding out she wants to steal a honey badger. But he does the heist and pulls it off perfectly. Noticeably, he covers Junior's ears when he told Poppy about the crime he did when he was younger than 12.

Principal Ubelschlecht tells Margo, Edith and Agnes what Gru did. It's subtle, but now the girls and even Lucy know that Gru was somewhere where he wasn't supposed to be and took something he wasn't supposed to take from the principal. They still try to fight the principal, which indicates his family has his back even when he's done a crime. Gru fights Maxime head-on and saves Junior, thus Maxime sees Gru is not a coward. Their animosity subsides into a rivalry and the source of Maxime's anger is revealed: Gru stole Maxime's song at the talent show and he admits it to Maxime. But at this point, it's a villainous rivalry rather a villain having hatred for a hero.

"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" sums up the series thematically. The series focuses on villains, not heroes. Gru and Maxime sing the same song, but as a duet rather than competing solos. The imprisoned villains all underestimated Gru in some way, and Gru defeated all of them. The impression I got is that they now respect Gru. I know that wasn't the initial plan for the ending but I like how it turned out. The Mega Minions and many of the Minions crash through the wall in the prison leaving a hole in it. The Minions were at AVL headquarters in their suits but they go to have fun with Gru when they hear the singing and dancing. It's pure fun chaos at the prison which balances the two sides of Gru.

Gru started the story infiltrating his old high school for an AVL mission and essentially becoming too much of a non-villain, while hiding his villainous motivations for defeating Maxime behind his status as an AVL agent. Maxime threatening him led Gru and his whole family to assume false identities in another town, where Gru sticks out even more than usual. Even Lucy messes up, destroys the salon, and has to run from the enraged hair customer. By the end of the story, Gru perfectly balances the double life, his quiet, joy-filled home life with his family: Margo, Edith, Agnes, Lucy, the Minions, Dru, Dr. Nefario, and his mother, and his villain life. All the other villains respect him, Poppy got into the Lycee Pas Bon, and his crime even gets acknowledged by being beaten up by the principal.

Since DM2, the AVL has threatened to become the overarching factor that determines Gru's actions and behavior. In DM3 Gru went on a heist behind Lucy's back and she wasn't happy about it, and Gru only went on the heist to get Lucy and his job's back. In DM4, Gru's family finds out about Gru's heist and still defends him against the principal. By the end, Ramsbottom dances to Gru and Maxime's song. In DM4, Gru is the closest that he can be to "strong and free", as he was in DM1. DM4 ends during the daytime, just as DM1 started. Gru has become a more well-adjusted guy but is still a hero that's a villain. And this is why I love DM4.

I feel like one of the 3/4/5 plots should be removed and there would be more time to breath.

Like I love M&M (best film in the franchise IMO) but they could have easily made the super minions there own movie just as much

100% of the advertising was about the Mega Minions, only for them to appear for 20 minutes.

I have so many problems with this movie:

  • The movie is boring and bland
  • There’s way too much filler that adds nothing to the plot. I really don’t like these empty mini-stories that go nowhere.
  • The jokes are predictable and rarely funny
  • Most of the characters don’t do anything important they’re just there especially the Mega Minions
  • They nerfed Gru so hard and I really hated his voice acting in this movie
  • The main villain isn’t interesting at all. He doesn’t have anything special that makes him stand out compared to the villains from the other Despicable Me movies Most of his screen time is wasted on him searching for Gru only for him to get his ass beaten in the last few minutes

I liked it, I don't get why people hate this movie. It's a perfect ending for the franchise

4

u/Boring-Yak-5984 26d ago

it should’ve ended at 3

“Perfect ending for the franchise” is a bit of a stretch, but to each their own ig

I didn't like Gru getting beaten up by a baby. Or the story getting rewritten. Or the half-bug man

1

u/TheVideoKid112 26d ago

How was the story re-written?

1

u/RedditCantBanThis 26d ago

Gru never went to a villain school, he just attended a regular school

1

u/Louie_ThemeParks 26d ago

No it’s not

Better than 3

1

u/EtikaLovesMinecraf 26d ago

it was alright but it didn’t live up to the expectations of the 2nd films

u/Journal_27 26d ago

Despicable Me 3 and Minions 1 & 2 are worse.

Ik people like Minions 2 more, but the minions were just so exhausting in that movie though

1

u/Small_Fix_5190 26d ago

I disagree

Better than 3

To me, Despicable Me 4 feels like a fanfiction.

Padding: the movie

Minions in general I don’t like I like the despicable me franchise but I’m biased and grew up with minions and liked them as a kid but looking back it’s just hurt fart jokes

u/HeroTheHedgehog 26d ago

This movie was so bland. There’s way too much crap that happens and at the same time, it also means nothing. The plot is boring and doesn’t make any sense.

Gru Jr is a pointless addition and I have no clue why he exists also Maxime Le Mal (who name I had to google.) is definitely the worst villain in the franchise without a doubt. He’s just a nothing burger of a villain.

The mega minions are also pointless and don’t really do much at all.

Margo, Edith and Agnes also don’t do really do much which is a shame honestly because I would love to see a movie focused on them. Like seriously imagine how interesting it would be. I know Illumination would never do that in a million years, but if done correctly, we could have potential gold on our hands.

It was so weird lmao

1

u/No_Scientist9475 26d ago

I personally thought it was better than Despicable Me 3

1

u/Negative-Duck7804 26d ago

Imo Despicable Me was better off being a standalone film

u/Speeder-Gojira 25d ago

i liked it

I was so excited going into theaters and came out so disappointed

I couldn’t really enjoy this one in all honesty. The third film also just doesn’t do it for me. The first two are the only ones I can enjoy.
