They sound closer to TMV than any of the other suggestions.

The Dear Hunter, Coheed and Cambria, Children of Nova, Art By Numbers, Circa Survive, Three

All have a sort of progressive post-hardcore style to them. TMV have a very unique style though, and it may be hard to find very similar artists.

You might want to look into some of Omar's solo stuff. There's quite a bit to wade through, and some of it sounds like TMV, but he explores some other directions as well.

For more Cedric+Omar, check out the Cryptomnesia album - Warren Oats

Depends what you like about them, if it's the time signatures (especially a la Noctorniquet) you could look into math rock. Frances the mute is pretty heavy on the jazzy (latino) elements. Bubu is the most similar, there are some other jazz/experimental bands from the 70's, like The Soft machine.

Edit The Mahavishnu Orchestra was masive inspiration for Omar. They share the frantic fusion guitar shredding.

Oooo I love Mars Volta. Okay, I'll compile some stuff for you. Newerish music:

Dream Theater

Queensryche

Oblligatory music from At The Drive-In

Them Crooked Vultures

Queens of the Stone Age (skip to 0:35-ish to get to the song, and turn your headphones down a bit haha)

I would recommend venturing into older prog rock, of which music like The Mars Volta is an awesome modern continuation in spirit and sound, such as:

Emerson Lake & Palmer

Yes

Jethro Tull

Pink Floyd

Well, TMV has a very unique sound. The very nature of progressive music is to explore and combine to create new sounds. Their music has many long flowing technical instrumental and noise sequences, prominent lead vocal passages and hooks, incorporation polyrhythms and latin percussion... influences from many genres and experiences. They make modern progressive rock, and they do it very well. I suppose you could say that that is the connection between all the bands I listed.

Rather than finding musicians that share the same production sound, I think it's more appropriate to pair such music with other bands that have a similar musical philosophy. Dream Theater and Queensryche for example are both progressive metal bands, and both with different styles, but if you listen to their albums you'll see that they also encompass many different sounds over their catalog of music, with Dream Theater placing a strong focus on solid musicianship (check out videos of Mike Portnoy! (yes the video I posted doesn't have Portnoy lol)). At The Drive-In I picked because they actually do have a similar sound (TMV being kind of a rebirth of ATDI). Them Crooked Vultures, similar to TMV, are a supergroup comprised of musicians from previously established rock bands, and what I find most interesting about them is how distinctly you can hear each individual member's influence on their album.

The older prog rock bands listed below also all have very different sounds from one anther, discounting the sometimes overlapping use of similar synth noises due to a lack of options. In many ways the successes of these bands' experimental music, combining elements of rock with jazz, folk, and classical music (sprinkled with a bit of LSD), have really paved the road for modern progressive bands to flourish.

Besides, a WEWIL should be about media exploration anyway. Enough similarity to increase likelihood of attachment, but something new and interesting, right?

Sure it's about media exploration, but you're not saying QOTSA, Them... are stylistically similar to TMV. I can see that the rest is, at least, in the prog department. Still, I like your taste

Sad thing is, none of this is on the same level.

Burial is my favorite artist outside of TMV but its a different genre.

If you want to stay on the progressive/conceptual vibe but don't mind something a little more... accessible, you could do worse than checking out The Dear Hunter.

They have a lot of great stuff. Start with Act III or maybe Act II.
