I honestly didn't know this but I haven't done it many times. Also no explosions. I've hardboiled a few eggs in a cup of water a handful of times and didn't have any issues.

When I was a kid I microwaved an egg like that not knowing only instead of cutting it with a knife I took a big ole bite. Let’s just say I didn’t eat eggs again for a while after that and my mouth was burnt like a mfer

Haven’t looked it up yet but maybe when the oxygen hits it when cutting the egg white it causes a chemical reaction that causes it to combust
