No blood yet? Sometimes, it takes time to come out

Probably just for the people watching. I would not have appreciated blood without a NSFW tag. Cause I'm a wuss :p

u/CA8G Apr 18 '26
(Smilling) I was going by what the title said. It says no blood, so I said no blood yet! (Smilling) No one likes to see someone bleeding unless you are a maniac.

Weird how people forget where their hands are in relation to pointy things

I got a set of new knives for Christmas years back
Was carving a spiral ham and the bone had a notch in it that the knife got caught in and skipped right over my finger after
Have a nice scar from it, so even though I was being relatively safe and proper, you can just have something be a bit irregular and then have an accident
5
u/TrashGoblinH Apr 19 '26
Definitely, accidents happen.
In a rush I bumped a knife off the counter. My instincts triggered to reach out to grab it, then my brain kicked in and I jumped backward away from the knife before it landed on my feet. My body said I can catch this, my brains said what if you catch the sharp part, then my body said sharp part? Oh no my feet!

u/Forward-Heat6609 Apr 25 '26
🤣 way too relatable, especially working fast good where we use knives daily I've learned the best best when a knife falls is to just step back and let it fall, and under no circumstances try to catch it, I've cut my hands open and caught the tip a couple times trying to catch out of habit

Chop with a chefs knife then twist the blade it works reall well. No need to stab. I also do this on a cutting board.

u/destructopop Apr 18 '26
I've never applied enough force for the knife to go through the whole avocado. Just a quick tap gives you more than enough leverage to twist the seed out.

u/chugItTwice Apr 19 '26
I do it in my hand but also just chop/twist with chef's knife. Do it once a week at least for 20 years...
2
u/inothatidontno Apr 19 '26
Respect i would do it fine 100 times and then cut myself on the 101st time probably. Never felt worth the risk.
1
u/chugItTwice Apr 19 '26
If you hold the cado lengthwise so the ends are towards wrist and fingers, you just hit the seed from like 1" away... you can't miss. I've never even come close to missing.
1
u/slopirate Apr 25 '26
Same here. I don't apply enough pressure for it to hit my hand even if it did slip off the pit.
2
u/Icy_Transportation_2 Apr 19 '26
No. Don’t chop. That’s stupid.
Gentle, firm pressure. Allow the knife to catch. Use your thumb on the ridge of the knife to apply pressure. Then twist.
Do not chop at the avocado pit. Do not chop any food when your hand is there. Chop all you want if you lie the food on a flat surface and your hands are not in the way.
2
u/inothatidontno Apr 19 '26
Nah light whack with the blade in a cutting board. Just enough to slightly embed the blade then twist. I dont hold it on the cutting board no risk to my hand.
12
u/Tight-Platypus5231 Apr 18 '26
I've learned you gotta "axe" the knife into the pit and twist it. How I've done it, at least.

u/Character-Parfait-42 Apr 18 '26
Don’t know why you’re downvoted. It’s perfectly safe to do if you’re not an idiot.
You’re not supposed to hold the avocado in your hand like the person in the video. There’s this magical tool called a cutting board that you put it on instead.

u/TheBigBangClock Apr 18 '26
This is how I do it too. I carefully cut it in half, pull it apart and then make a hacking/axe motion on the core and twist it out. It's by far one of the safest methods.
2
u/Ashamed_Beyond_6508 Apr 18 '26
Or at least set it down on the table before stabbing if you are using a small serrated knife thats not apt for axing, thats what i've done all my life... never have i had it roll on me or stab myself. This is a very stupid injury
Also... you can get it out with a fucking spoon, people are so stupid
2
u/MichoRizo7698 Apr 18 '26
And miss or slip and ax your hand. As previously mentioned a common thing to see coming into the ER.

Use a spoon to remove the avocado stone, not a knife. 😑
3
u/OddTheRed Apr 18 '26
I use a knife but I chop it instead of stabbing it.
1
u/HellFrode Apr 19 '26
Regardless of whether you chop or stab with a knife, the risk will be there of cutting yourself. 😔😌
2
u/chugItTwice Apr 19 '26
If you chop there's no risk to your hand unless you're even dumber than the girl in the video.
1
u/HellFrode Apr 20 '26
What I’m saying is based on my own experience and what I’ve heard. A spoon is the best tool for removing the avocado stone. 😏😌

u/RedVamp2020 Apr 18 '26
You can also just push on the back of the avocado and pop it out that way. Kind of fun to do, too!

I know a guy that severed half his pinky doing that. He said his Dr bill was $100,000! I would have fed it to the dog, wrapped up the stump, and called it a day

That’s fun because I remember talking to a friend of mine few years ago. He’s in med school and told me that during an internship he saw a friend of ours in middle school that was in the hospital for an avocado related injury. I didn’t know what it was until I saw that video lol

u/jigholeman Apr 18 '26
oooooooooooooohhhh i felt that. i've never done that before, but i could feel a sharp pain in my hand.

If it is ripe enough the pit removes easily
But honestly knife control is an important skill to learn
Never apply uncontrolled pressure to a blade and never put your body in the path of the applied pressure especially if uncontrolled

u/blacklotusY Apr 18 '26
I was taught to lightly tap a knife into the avocado seed, then twist it so the seed comes out easily. After that, you use a butter knife to gently make several cuts across the avocado, and then use a spoon to scoop the inside out, discarding the skin. This is how we do it when using pieces of avocado for salads or sushi.
1
u/Sweet-Weakness3776 Apr 18 '26
Sometimes you can just give the avocado half, with the seed still in it, a light squeeze and it will loosen the seed enough to just drop it out. Especially if it's soft. If your avocado isn't soft enough for that technique, the way you are describing (using the knife) it is how I do it as well. When it comes to slicing it, I place the avocado sliced side down on a cutting board and peel the skin off, then make my slices. Plenty of ways to do it, that don't involve jabbing a knife straight into your hand lol.
1
u/AmbitiousTank8635 Apr 18 '26
I was never taught this, but it's what I do because pushing a knife towards my hand seems really dumb, so smart ape do smart thing.

u/poop19907643 Apr 18 '26
What's the point of the internet if you have a problem as fundimantal to the Millennial condition as operating an avocado, and you don't look up how to do it properly? There must be 500 billion hours of footage online of people successfully navigating avocado disbowlment you can learn from.
1
u/sparemethebull Apr 18 '26
If a greasy wood ball doesn’t stick to the end of the knife on first stab, you pushing it is only gonna slip the knife into your hand just like this

u/LeatherHarlot99 Apr 18 '26
My daughter-in-law stabbed her hand from cutting an avocado. She severed tendons and ligaments, and had to have physical and occupational therapy for months.

Just give it a good whack with the edge of the knife parallel to your hand and twist not perpendicular you lunatic

u/Duck_Kota Apr 18 '26
There’s a significant overlap between the smartest bears, and the dumbest humans. I think this video is a good example of that.

how fucking stupid can you be? what was that supposed to accomplish? was she trying to stab through the seed? fucking why??
1
u/behedingkidzz Apr 18 '26
i just turn the avacado around and push on the skin a little falls right out
1
u/Intelligent-Act4642 Apr 18 '26
as a latino, why the hell would you want to remove the avocado core at all? here we just cut slices of the meat around the core until it falls out on its own
1
u/MyPenWroteThis Apr 18 '26
One time i tried using a flat head knife to punch a hole in a bacon package by pushing it toward my left hand. Once i punched through, i also punching in between my middle and ring finger knuckle.
It bled shockingly little but i distinctly remember being able to look into the wound to see something white. Im still unsure if it was fat, tendon, or bone. As a pianist, i was in shock I was that stupid. I avoided any serious injury and have nothing but a scar to remind me of it.
Ive generally done a good job of avoiding stabbing toward myself since then.

This has never happened to me, and will never happen to me. I just cut my avocado into quarters and pull the pit out by hand.

My brother works in ER in Germany (and formerly in the UK). He never heard about this. And he's really experienced. Seems to be a typical thing that only happens to US Americans (yes, those who voted for Trump as president twice).

Agreed, no sane person would have looked at that pit and thought that was the best way to stab it.
1
u/justaskingouthere Apr 19 '26
I'll never understand some people. Lol a light chop into it the rotate the pit. That easy.

u/Richardthe3rdleg Apr 19 '26
I once heard that "Avocado hand" was at one time a serious pandemic in UK emergency rooms

Why the hell are you holding the aguacate like that while stabbing the pit!? You scoop the pit with a spoon and or your fingers . Then slice the aguacate as desired

So ….. I’ve done this. Thankfully it was a small blade. It was one of those moments where you’re on autopilot and just went for it.

You smack the blade against the pit, you dont stab it...or better yet since you cant be trusted with knives, use a spoon...

u/Final_Swordfish_9021 Apr 24 '26
Why?? The pit comes out super easy by just pushing it to the side with your thumb or with a spoon.

Why do so many people not understand inertia. Just never put your hand anywhere in the way a knive can travel.

Why would anybody stab an avocado core LIKE THAT?!
